Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Are/Were You A Wild and Crazy Genealogist?

Hey genea-folks,

it's Saturday Night again,

 time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission this week, should you decide to accept it, is to:

1) What is the most wild, crazy, off-the-wall, or really stupid thing you have done in pursuit of your ancestral families and their family history?

2) Tell us about it in your own blog post, a comment to this post, or a comment or status on Facebook.

Here's mine:

I'm a pretty methodical person. I don't do dangerous or criminal things on a whim (well, um, there were times when I was younger and drank more than I should have). I am also a fairly shy person - I don't like striking up conversations or meeting people I don't know, although that was worse when I was younger.

I started doing genealogy research in 1988, and had found quite a bit of information about my Seaver and Richmond lines in New England, although I couldn't figure out where the Richmonds came from in England. My brother and I traveled to Massachusetts in August 1990 to attend our uncle's 50th wedding anniversary, and I was able to talk to a number of the aunts, uncles and cousins about the Richmond family down in the Putnam, Connecticut area.

We had a free day, so my brother and I took off from Salem New Hampshire for Putnam (only 84 miles!), and stopped at a motel in Putnam. We had dinner, noticed a graveyard right next to the motel, and decided to cold call the Richmond people in the phone book. We hit gold on the second call - second cousins of ours with some family information. Russell was deaf, so we talked to his wife, and arranged for Russell to meet us at the Grove Street Cemetery right next to the motel. He came at the appointed hour, and showed us the graves in the cemetery.

We hoped that he would take us out to their home and show some of the family treasures with us. He did, and we had a splendid time talking about the Richmond family line, looking at family photos, and seeing the family farm next door to their log cabin home. They remembered being visited in the 1930s by their Seaver cousins from Leominster, Massachusetts.  We gathered some of the papers and photos up and went down to a local drugstore to copy them. Here is a digital image of a xerox copy of one of the family photographs (I wonder who has it now?):

This is the James Richman/Richmond (1821-1912) family in about 1885, also showing Hannah (Rich) Richmond (1824-1911) and 8 of their 9 children.

Linda and I stopped by to see Russell and Helen several times in the 1990s, and both died since then.

I'm sure that many of my readers have been more adventurous and outgoing than I have been in my genealogical pursuits!

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category.  Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Elizabeth Tefft was born in about 1683 in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Jenckes) Tefft[1-3].

She married Solomon Carpenter (1677-1750) in about 1702 in South Kingstown; he was the son of Samuel and Sarah (Redway) Carpenter[1-3].  They had six children, all born in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.

*  Elizabeth Carpenter (1703-????), married 1722 James Braman (1679-1741).

Elizabeth's father, Samuel Tefft, died after 16 March 1725 (when he made his will) and before December 20, 1725 when the probate of the will is mentioned in the South Kingstown Probate Records[4].  In his will he bequeathed to his daughter Elizabeth Carpenter:
"Item I Give to my Welbeloved Daughters (Viz) Elizabeth Carpenter Esther Mumford and Mary Newton Each of Them Twenty pounds Apiece to be paid to them by my said son John Tefft within one year Next after my Decease."
Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth (Jenckes) Tefft of South Kingstown, died testate, having written a will dated 4 July 1739, which was proved on 12 May 1740[5].  The will reads (transcribed by Randy Seaver from the clerk's copy on South Kingstown (RI) Probate and Town Council Records, Volume 3, Pages 136-139, accessed on FHL Microfilm 0,931,833).  In her will she bequeathed to her daughter Elizabeth Carpenter:
"Item To my Daughter Elizabeth Carpenter I give one Sixth part [of the rest and residue of my estate]."
Elizabeth (Tefft) Carpenter died before her husband wrote his will on 30 April 1750, since she is not mentioned in Solomon's will[6].

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog in 2014.  I have extended this theme in 2023 to 520 Ancestors in 520 Weeks.

Census Whacking (Again) On St. Patrick's Day

Here's an oldie but a goodie from 17 March 2007 on Genea-Musings (with updates and additions over the years):  I browsed through the 1920 U.S. Census on www.Ancestry.com  looking for funny or strange names to help celebrate St. Patrick's Day and Irish names. There is a rich selection:

* Patrick Ireland resided in Matagorda County TX (born in Texas - who knew?)

* St. Lester Patrick resided in Hillsborough County NH (born in Canada)

* Patrick Patrick resided in Macon County AL (born AL)

* Patrick Fitz Patrick resided in Queens County NY (born in Ireland)

* Paddy Green resided in Lucas County OH (born Ireland)

* Green Kelley resided in Hudson County NJ (born Ireland)

*  Kelly Banshey resided in Beardstown, Illinois.

*  Banshe Jedinak resided in Trinidad, Colorado.

* There are 64 males named Patrick Green born in Ireland.

* Daniel Boy resided in Cuyahoga County OH (born in Russia)

* Daniel Erin Ireland resided in Wyandotte County KS (born in KS)

* Patrick Luck resided in Kings County NY (born in Ireland)

*  Erin Ireland resided in Logan County, CO (born in Nebraska)

* There are 87 females named Rose Ireland - but only one was born in Ireland.

*  There are 1,889 persons with the surname Clover, but only 6 were born in Ireland.

*  There are 222 persons with the surname Shamrock, and 6 with the first name of Shamrock, but none were born in Ireland.

*  There are 9 Kate Irelands in the census, but none were born in Ireland

*  There are 91 persons with surname Ireland that were born in Ireland.

*  There are 606 persons with the surname Limerick, but only 5 were born in Ireland.

*  There are 5,372 with the surname Cork, but only 39 were born in Ireland.

*  There are 102 persons with the surname Fairy, but only 2 were born in Ireland.

*  There are 3,861 persons with surname Irish, but only 22 were born in Ireland.

*  There are 26,144 persons with the first name starting with "Kat" and 41,434 starting with "Cat" born in Ireland

*  There are 22,043 persons with the surname Shannon, but only 880 were born in Ireland.

*  There are 52,560 persons with the first name starting with "Pat" and 49 starting with "Pad" born in Ireland

*  There are 1,059,917 persons in the 1920 census that were born in Ireland.

*  There are 3,888,940 persons whose father was born in Ireland.

*  There are 3,799,355 persons whose mother was born in Ireland.

*  There are 3,078,127 persons whose mother and father were born in Ireland.

*  I have exactly 1 known ancestor who were born in Ireland after 1600.

There were no people in the 1920 census with the surname of Leprechaun or Banshee.  Not being Irish, or having much known Irish ancestry, or much experience researching in Ireland - I don't know all of the legends and songs that might provide more names to search.  What other names should I look for next year?
