Randy's Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 9 August 2026

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week (ending Sunday, 9 August 2026). 

1)  Attended the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) Board Meeting on Wednesday and reported on the Newsletter, Research Group meeting and Family History Roundtable meeting.  Wrote, edited and published the August 2026 edition of the CVGS Newsletter.

2)  Curated genealogy-related articles to keep myself and my readers updated on the genealogy world in:

3)  Transcribed the 1793 quitclaim Deed of David Kirby to John Kirby in Bristol County, Massachusetts for Amanuensis Monday with help from FamilySearch Full-Text Search.

4)  Wrote one Life Memoir for an ancestor, and posted it on Genea-Musings and  Substack:
5)  Requested free AI tools to tell me about these genealogy and family history subjects, and posted them on Genea-Musings and Substack: 
7)  Wrote an AI-assisted short story about my parents lives and romance on Genea-Musings and Substack:
8)  Wrote an AI-assisted short story about my maternal grandparents lives and romance on Genea-Musings and Substack:
9)  Housekeeping -- updated my Randy's AI and Genealogy page and added to the AI-assisted story  compendiums. Added a number of the recent Google NotebookLM Videos to my YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@RandySeaver.

10)  Searched for more records of ancestral families on Ancestry, FamilySearch and MyHeritage, downloaded record images to my digital file folders, and added research notes, events and sources to RootsMagic profiles.  My RootsMagic family tree now has 75,119 profiles (up 0 from last week)  and 148,077 source citations (up 2).  

11)  My AncestryDNA test now has 52,343 DNA matches (up 35 from 2 August) with 2,220  "close" matches (20 cM or more) today (up 1), with no new ThruLines.  Added Notes to one Match, and added no new DNA match lines to RootsMagic. MyHeritageDNA test now has 14,799 DNA matches (up 26 from 2 August) for me, with 26 Theories of Family Relativity.  

12) Wrote 21 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which one was a press release. The most viewed post last week was Emily and Lyle’s Story: Ordinary Days, January and February 1918 with 282 views.  Genea-Musings had about 536,000 page views last week and over 1,328,000 views over the past month (lots of bots I think). 

13)  Real life events:  Visited Linda several days this past week at her memory care facility.  Went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday. Went to the memorial service and church reception on Saturday for my friend Tomi Finch. Still reading Billy Straight by Jonathan Kellerman. Watched the Padres games - they were 4-3 this past week and are 62-57.

NOTE:  I spent about 30 hours on these genealogy activities this week,  learned quite a bit, and had some genealogy fun!

Randy's Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 2 August 2026

 Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week (ending Sunday, 2 August 2026). 

1)  Attended the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) General Meeting on Wednesday with Allison DePrey Singleton as the speaker on "Getting to Know The Genealogy Center: Researching from Home" (about Allen County Public Library offerings).

2)  Attended the San Diego Genealogical Society (SDGS) DNA Interest Group meeting on Saturday with Colin Whitney presenting his "Ancestry 2026" update.

3)  Curated genealogy-related articles to keep myself and my readers updated on the genealogy world in:

4)  Transcribed the 1794 quitclaim Deed of Ichabod Wilbore to David Kirby in Bristol County, Massachusetts for Amanuensis Monday with help from FamilySearch Full-Text Search.

5)  Wrote one Life Memoir for an ancestor, and posted it on Genea-Musings and  Substack:
6)  Requested free AI tools to tell me about these genealogy and family history subjects, and posted them on Genea-Musings and Substack: 
7)  Wrote an AI-assisted short story about my parents lives and romance on Genea-Musings and Substack:
8)  Wrote an AI-assisted short story about my grandparents lives and romance on Genea-Musings and Substack:
9)  Posted another genealogy-related poem "The Genealogist's Lament" and song "The Genealogy Blues" in An AI Poem -- "The Genealogist's Lament," and AI Song "The Genealogy Blues." Used Canva.com to put the song video on YouTube.

10)  Housekeeping -- updated my Randy's AI and Genealogy page.  Added a number of the recent Google NotebookLM Videos to my YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@RandySeaver.

11)  Checked out Jason Duncan's Ancestor Map Builder 2.0.  Pretty useful, will probably be improved over time.

12)  Searched for more records of ancestral families on Ancestry, FamilySearch and MyHeritage, downloaded record images to my digital file folders, and added research notes, events and sources to RootsMagic profiles.  My RootsMagic family tree now has 75,119 profiles (up 0 from last week)  and 148,075 source citations (up 3).  

13)  My AncestryDNA test now has 52,308 DNA matches (up 55 from 26 July) with 2,219  "close" matches (20 cM or more) today (up 5), with 1 New ThruLines.  Added Notes to no Matches, and added no new DNA match lines to RootsMagic. MyHeritageDNA test now has 14,773 DNA matches (up 27 from 26 July) for me, with 26 Theories of Family Relativity.  

14) Wrote 23 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which one was a press release. The most viewed post last week was Amanuensis Monday -- 1793 Quitclaim Deed of David Kirby to John Kirby for Land in Westport, Bristol County, Massachusetts with 307 views.  Genea-Musings had about 354,000 page views last week and over 902,000 views over the past month (lots of bots I think). 

15)  Real life events:  Visited Linda several days this past week at her memory care facility.  Went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday. Attended the church Men's Bible Study breakfast on Saturday. Finished reading Double Tap by Steve Martini and started Billy Striaght by Jonathan Kellerman. Watched the Padres games - they were 5-1 this past week and are 58-54.

NOTE:  I spent about 30 hours on these genealogy activities this week,  learned quite a bit, and had some genealogy fun!.

 Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week (ending Sunday, 26 July 2026). 

1)  Curated genealogy-related articles to keep myself and my readers updated on the genealogy world in:

2)  Transcribed the 1793 quitclaim Deed of David and Martha Kirby to John Kirby in Bristol County, Massachusetts for Amanuensis Monday with help from FamilySearch Full-Text Search.

3)  Wrote one Life Memoir for an ancestor, and posted it on Genea-Musings and  Substack:
4)  Requested free AI tools to tell me about these genealogy and family history subjects, and posted them on Genea-Musings and Substack: 
6)  Wrote an AI-assisted short story about my parents lives and romance on Genea-Musings and Substack:
7)  Wrote an AI-assisted short story about my grandparents lives and romance on Genea-Musings and Substack:
8)  Created another compendium for my AI assisted biographies, memoirs, stories and videos for the Auble/Kemp/Knapp/Sovereen ancestors in:
9)  Housekeeping -- updated my Randy's AI and Genealogy page. Transferred the last two months of AI files to my AI file folders from Downloads.  Added a number of the recent Google NotebookLM Videos to my YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@RandySeaver.

10)  Searched for more records of ancestral families on Ancestry, FamilySearch and MyHeritage, downloaded record images to my digital file folders, and added research notes, events and sources to RootsMagic profiles.  My RootsMagic family tree now has 75,119 profiles (up 12 from last week)  and 148,072 source citations (up 1).  

11)  My AncestryDNA test now has 52,253 DNA matches (up 93 from 19 July) with 2,214  "close" matches (20 cM or more) today (up 7), with 9 New ThruLines.  Added Notes to 2 Matches, and added no new DNA match lines to RootsMagic. MyHeritageDNA test now has 14,746 DNA matches (up 52 from 19 July) for me.  

12) Wrote 21 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which one was a press release. The most viewed post last week was Ask AI: "Describe 20 AI Use Cases For Genealogists and Family Historians" - Anthropic Claude's Response with 351 views.  Genea-Musings had about 255,000 page views last week and over 637,000 views over the past month (lots of bots I think). 

13)  Real life events:  Visited Linda several days this past week at her memory care facility.  Went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday. Called junk dealer for about 25% of the garage stuff -- almost filled up their truck -- still plenty to sort and trash/donate/save.  Still reading Double Tap by Steve Martini. Watched parts of World Cup games. Watched the Padres games - they were 4-3 this past week and are 53-53.

14)  I greatly enjoy doing this genealogy work every week. It provides me more information about my ancestors and their lives, enhances my knowledge base and analysis capabilities, and keeps me away from doing nothing, dozing off in my recliner, watching TV news and sports, or scrolling on my phone 16 hours a day.  For this past week, I estimate that I worked on genealogy for about 30 to 35 hours (for the record, I did the nothing/dozing/TV/scrolling about 50 to 60 hours).  Sleeping, eating, shopping and visiting take another 60-70 hours each week.

Randy's Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 19 July 2026

 Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week (ending Sunday, 5 July 2026). 

1)  Hosted and moderated the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) Family History Roundtable Meeting on Zoom. I reported on creating and exporting a GEDCOM File, how to save and preserve your family history, participation in Stories250, and four of us told stories about our mothers. 

2)  Curated genealogy-related articles to keep myself and my readers updated on the genealogy world in:

3)  Transcribed the 1846 Deed of Cornelius and Mary Feather to Joshua Russell in Mercer County, Pennsylvania for Amanuensis Monday with help from FamilySearch Full-Text Search.

4)  Wrote one Life Memoir for an ancestor, and posted it on Genea-Musings and  Substack:
5)  Requested free AI tools to tell me about these genealogy and family history subjects, and posted them on Genea-Musings and Substack: 
7)  Wrote an AI-assisted short story about my parents lives and romance on Genea-Musings and Substack:

MyHeritageDNA test now has 14,694 DNA matches (up 24 from 12 Julyne) for me.  

12) Wrote 21 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which one was a press release. The most viewed post last week was Life Memoir of Dorothea (Dinkel) Spangler of York, Pennsylvania in 1834 with 315 views.  Genea-Musings had about 91,800 page views last week and over 661,000 views over the past month (lots of bots I think). 

13)  Real life events:  Visited Linda several days this past week at her memory care facility.  Went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday.Lori and Lucas arrived on Thursday night and left Sundsay afternoon -- we had fun and got some decluttering done.  Still reading Double Tap by Steve Martini. Watched the basweball All-Star game and parts of World Cup games. Watched the Padres games - they were 1-2 this past week and are 49-50.

The Stories250 Celebration: "Our Ancestors at the Time of the American Revolution" Stories

 In honor of America 250 (the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence), Barbara Tien was the creator, producer and executor of a plan to highlight genealogy and family history writers on SubStack with stories about an ancestor, reletive, or event related to the Revolutionary War.  Writers were invited to submit their stories for inclusion in this plan culminating in a discussion video and a published book. I submitted one of my America250 stories.

1)  Last week on 9 July, Barbara hosted Stories250 | A Celebration: Our Ancestors at the Time of the American Revolution -- two Zoom meetings where most of the story submitters described their contribution to Stories250.  Her SubStack article says:

Together we created a digital time capsule, connecting modern descendants to the lives lived by our ancestors 250 years ago during a tumultuous period of war in North America. Hear our stories.

The SubStack article has links to each of the Stories contributed by 22 writers.

2)  My own contribution was from my blog post Ask AI: "Please Write a Short Story About Norman Seaver Returning Home After Lexington in 1775."  

My discussion about my story starts at 1:09:10 in the YouTube video.  Here is a video clip of my discussion (courtesy of Barbara Tien who is so good at this!):

I made one error in my narrative -- I said Norman Seaver died in 1777, when his actual death date was 1787.  Did you catch that at the time I said it?

3)  But wait -- Barbara has arranged to publish a commemorative book in magazine format containing all of the submitted stories.  She notes:

"The entire book, with title pages and indexes, should be around 550 pages. Although I will not add any overhead or padding to my costs, the total per copy purchased through Lulu will be roughly US$30, plus shipping. I expect printing options in all global markets, including the US, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada."

I will post the link to purchase the book in magazine format here when it is available.

Randy's Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 12 July 2026

 Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week (ending Sunday, 5 July 2026). 

1)  Hosted and moderated the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS) Research Group Meeting. I reported on The new Genealogy Asistant version, the new GEDMatch website, genealogy subscription websites, advanced education opportunities, and Steve Little's Genealogical Research Assistant, plus some of my own work.  We reviewed the MyHeritage website, and then discussed the progress we made in the past month. 

2)  Participated in Barbara Tien's Stories250 webinar, and discussed my story about Norman Seaver's return home from the Lexington Alarm in 1775.

3)  Curated genealogy-related articles to keep myself and my readers updated on the genealogy world in:

4)  Transcribed the 1818 Deed of Jacob, Elizabeth and John Row to Jonathan Potter in Hunterdon County, New Jersey for Amanuensis Monday with help from FamilySearch Full-Text Search.

5)  Wrote one Life Memoir for an ancestor, and posted it on Genea-Musings and  Substack:
6)  Requested free AI tools to tell me about these genealogy and family history subjects, and posted them on Genea-Musings and Substack: 

8)  Wrote an AI-assisted short story about my parents lives and romance on Genea-Musings and Substack:

12)  Used the Genealogical Research Assistant in Google Gemini 3 and an Anthropic Claude Skill to describe and analyze an ancestor's death certificate accordingt to the Genealogical Proof Standard in Using Steve Little's Genealogical Research Assistant (V. 8.5.1c) To Evaluate a Death Certificate.

13)  Searched for more records of ancestral families on Ancestry, FamilySearch and MyHeritage, downloaded record images to my digital file folders, and added research notes, events and sources to RootsMagic profiles.  My RootsMagic family tree now has 75,107 profiles (up 10 from last week)  and 148,070 source citations (up 7).  

14)  My AncestryDNA test now has 52,150 DNA matches (up 41 from 5 July) with 2,205  "close" matches (20 cM or more) today (up 2), with no New ThruLines.  Added Notes to no Matches, and added no new DNA match lines to RootsMagic. MyHeritageDNA test now has 14,670 DNA matches (up 18 from 5 Julyne) for me.  

15) Wrote 22 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which two were a press release. The most viewed post last week was Amanuensis Monday -- 1830 Deed of Mary Row to Jacob Row for Land in Hunterdon County, New Jersey with 357 views.  Genea-Musings had about 96,500 page views last week and over 1,102,000 views over the past month (lots of bots I think). 

16)  Real life events:  Visited Linda several days this past week at her memory care facility.  Went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday. Attended the church Men's Group breakfast on Saturday. Finished reading Fatal by John Lescroart and started Double Tap by Steve Martini. Watched some of the 250th anniversary celebrations and World Cup games. Watched the Padres games - they were 4-3 this past week and are 48-48 on the season at the All-Star break.
