4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

A Colburn family genealogy manuscript indicates that Hannah Colburn was born in 1673 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Rolfe) Colburn[1].  There is no birth entry for Hannah in the Chelmsford vital records book.

Hannah married Joseph Farwell (1658-1740) of Chelmsford on 23 January 1695/6 in Chelmsford[1-3].  He was the son of Joseph and Hannah (Learned) Farwell of Chelmsford. They had ten children, all born and recorded in Chelmsford, and listed in the Farwell genealogy book[2]:

*  Joseph Farwell (1696-1772), married 1719 Mary Gilson (1703-1774).
*  Thomas Farwell (1698-1731), married 1723 Elizabeth Pierce (1698-????).
*  Hannah Farwell (1701-1762), married (1) 1719 Eleazer Gilson (1695-1754); (2) 1755 Ephraim Sawtell (1685-1768).
*  Elizabeth Farwell (1703-1762), married 1722 John Stone (1699-1784).
*  Edward Farwell (1706-1775), married 1728 Hannah Russell (1708-1775).
*  Mary Farwell (1709-1804), married 1726 James Stone (1702-1783).
*  John Farwell (1711-1771), married (1) 1735 Jane Lakin (1715-1755); (2) 1755 Susanna White (1735-????).
*  Samuel Farwell (1714-1757), married 1737 Elizabeth Moors (1719-1797).
*  Daniel Farwell (1717-1808), married 1739 Mary Moore (1718-1800).
*  Sarah Farwell (1721-1721).

The Joseph Farwell family resided for several years after their marriage in Chelmsford, and then removed to Groton.  They attended the church in Groton[2].

Joseph Farwell died intestate in 1740, and his heirs settled his estate by deeds amongst themselves.  Hannah Farwell, his widow, conveyed her dower rights in Joseph's estate to her son Joseph Farwell on 10 March 1740/1[2].

Hannah (Colburn) Farwell died some time after 10 March 1740/1, probably in Groton.  There is no entry for her death in the Groton vital record book.  There is a Find A Grave memorial for her but there is no extant grave stone[4].

I have extended this theme in 2021 for an eighth year to 416 Ancestors in 416 Weeks. Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1696 Marriage of Joseph Farwell (1670-1740) and Hannah Colburn in Chelmsford, Massachusetts

  It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1696 marriage entry for Joseph Farwell and Hannah Colburn in Torrey's New England Marriages book:
The marriage  entry is the last entry on the page:
The marriage record transcription is:

"FARWELL, Joseph (1670-_ & Hannah COLBORN/COLBURN; 23 Jan 1695/6; Chelmsford {Farwell (1929) 50; Colburn-Coburn 17; Learned 29; Reg. 35:275, 84.4, 109.151}"

  The source citation for this record is:

"New England Marriages to 1700," online database with digital images, AmericanAncestors.org (New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2008, page 531, Joseph Farwell and Hannah Colburn marriage entry, 23 January 1695/6.

This is an entry in a digitized published book for marriages in Massachusetts, which was collected by Torrey from town record books and other records.  It is a Derivative Source with Secondary Information and Direct evidence of the marriage of Joseph Farwell and Hannah Colburn.

Joseph Farwell (1670-1740) was the son of Joseph and Hannah (Learned) Farwell of Chelmsford.  He married
Hannah Colburn (1673-1741), daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Rolfe) Colburn, on 23 January 1695/6 in Chelmsford. Joseph and Hannah (Colburn) Farwell had ten children.

Joseph and Hannah (Colburn) Farwell are my 7th great-grandparents, through their daughter Mary Farwell (1709-1804), who married  James Stone (1702-1783), in 1726 in Groton, Massachusetts.

Surname Saturday -- LNU (Hannah, who married Edward Colburne; England to colonial New England)

It's Surname Saturday, and I'm "counting down" my Ancestral Name List each week.

I am working in the 9th great-grandmothers by Ahnentafel number, and I am up to Ancestor #2399 who is Hannah LNU (1620-1713). [Note: the more recent ancestral families have been covered in earlier posts.]

My ancestral line back through one generation in this LNU family line is:

1. Randall J. Seaver

2. Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983)
3. Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002)

4. Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942)
5. Alma Bessie Richmond (1882-1962)

8. Frank Walton Seaver (1852-1922)
9. Hattie Louise Hildreth (1857-1920)

18.  Edward Hildreth (1831-1899)
19.  Sophia Newton (1834-1923)

36.  Zachariah Hildreth (1783-1857)
37.  Hannah Sawtell (1789-1857)

74.  Josiah Sawtell (1768-1847)
75.  Hannah Smith (1768-1827)

148.  Ephraim Sawtell (1735-1800)
149.  Abigail Stone (1737-1800)

298.  James Stone (1702-1783)
299.  Mary Farwell (1709-1804)

598.  Joseph Farwell (1670-1740)
599.  Hannah Colburn (1673-1741)

1198.  Thomas Colburn (1649-1728)

1199.  Hannah Rolfe (1650-1681)

2396.  Edward Colborne, born 1618 in Wiltshire, England; died 17 February 1701 in Chelmsford, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.  He married before 1642 in Massachusetts, United States.
2397.  Hannah LNU, born about 1620 in England; died before 23 January 1713 in probably Dracut, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.

Children of Edward Colborne and Hannah are:
U*  Edward Colburn (1642-1675).
*  John Colburn (1645-1695), married 1671 Susanna Reed (1648-1739).
*  Robert Colburn (1647-1701), married 1669 Mary Bishop (1651-1700).
Thomas Colburn (1649-1728), married (1) 1672 Hannah Rolfe (1650-1681); (2) Mary Richardson (1662-????).
*  Daniel Colburn (1654-1712), married 1685 Sarah Blood (1658-1741).
*  Hannah Colburn (1656-1710), married 1682 Thomas Richardson (1661-1700).
*  Ezra Colburn (1658-1739), married 1681 Hannah Varnum (1661-1756).
*  Joseph Colburn (1661-1733), married (1) 1684 Hannah LNU (1663-1721); (2) 1722 Deborah Stevens (1676-????).
*  Lydia Colburn (1666-1720), married 1686 John Walker (1665-1726).

FamilySearch Family Tree indicates that Hannah LNU (1620-1713) is Hannah Rolfe (1620-1721), daughter of John Rolfe and Joane Coles.  I don't know if that is correct or not.  The 1663 will of John Rolfe does not mention a daughter Hannah or Colburn grandchildren.

Information on the Colborne family was obtained from:

1)  Kenneth L. Bosworth, "Edward Colborne of Ipswich, Massachusetts, (1618-1712) and Five Generations of his Descendants" [a manuscript at Huntington Beach Central Library, OCGS No 14,674, Jan 1995].

2)  Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, Volume II (Boston, Mass., NEHGR, 2001, pages 144-149.

I have done no original research on this COLBURN/COLBORNE line.
