Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your Visited States/Provinces Map

It's Saturday Night,
time for more Genealogy Fun!!

For this week's mission (should you decide to accept it), I challenge you to:

1)  What states in the USA and what provinces in Canada have you visited or lived in?

2)  Either list, or make a map of them (at the http://www.defocus.net/visitedstates/us-canada.html website) and indicate the following:

 red for states/provinces where you've not spent much time or seen very much.
*  amber for states/provinces  where you've at least slept and seen some sights.
 blue for states/provinces  you've spent a lot of time in or seen a fair amount of.
*  green for states/provinces  you've spent a great deal of time in on multiple visits.

3)  For extra credit, you could make a map to show where your ancestors resided at any time (e.g., in 1900), or perhaps where your 16 great-great-grandparents or 32 3rd-great-grandparents married, or where your ancestors were born, all with an appropriate legend.

4)  Tell us, or show us, your "Where I've been" map, and any other map that you created having fun tonight.  Put them in your own blog post, on Facebook or Google+, and leave a comment on this blog post so that we all see them.

Here are my maps:

1)  My "Where I've been" map of the United States and Canada:

So I've been to 40 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces.  I have ancestral localities in Iowa and Nebraska and definitely want to visit there someday.

I've only lived in California, but have made more than five trips to the other green states (hmm, maybe Hawaii and New Hampshire should be green too!).

2)  I decided to show where my 16 great-great grandparents resided at the time of their marriage.  The scale I used is:

*  red for states/provinces where 1 or 2 resided at marriage.
*  amber for states/provinces where 3 or 4 resided at marriage.
*  blue for states/provinces where 5 or 6 resided at marriage.
green for states/provinces where 7 or more resided at marriage.

I have 1 state (Massachusetts) where four of my great-great-grandparents resided at marriage, and 4 states and one province where 2 resided, and another 2 that married in England.  These marriages occurred in the 1840 to 1865 time frame.

3)  I decided to show the 3rd great-grandparents too (same scale):

*  red for states/provinces where 1 or 2 resided at marriage.
*  amber for states/provinces where 3 or 4 resided at marriage.
*  blue for states/provinces where 5 or 6 resided at marriage.
green for states/provinces where 7 or more resided at marriage.

Now I have 8 that resided in Massachusetts, and 4 that resided in 4 states and one province, and 4 that resided in England.

The England folks migrated to Connecticut in 1855, and the Ontario folks migrated from New York and New Jersey.

4)  A map of where my ancestors from my parents back through the 3rd great-grandparents (62 ancestors) were born - with a scale of:

*  red for states/provinces where 1 or 2 were born.
*  amber for states/provinces where 3 or 4 were born.
*  blue for states/provinces where 5 to 8 were born.
green for states/provinces where 9 or more were born.

On this map, out of the 62 persons from my parents back to the 3rd great-grandparents, I have 16 born in Massachusetts, 8 born in England, 7 born in New York and Pennsylvania, 6 born in Rhode Island and Connecticut, 5 in Ontario, etc.  The 1 in Quebec is my one French-Canadian ancestor who married in Ontario.

That was fun!

Mocavo Has FREE U.S. Census Images Available Forever

Today's blog post by Mocavo on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog is welcome news - see U.S. Federal Census Images & Viewer Now Free for Everyone Forever

The link to the search fields is http://www.mocavo.com/1790-1940-United-States-Census/126199:

Below the search fields above are links to search fields for each U.S. Federal census.

I put Isaac Seaver in the search field, born in Massachusetts, and received 11 results:

Clicking on the name for the first one on the list, for the 1900 census, I saw the record summary, with more information about the 1900 census:

The user has to click a link below the indexed information to see other household members.  Mocavo does not provide a high quality source citation for this census record.  It does note, for the record above:

"Original data: Twelfth Census of the United States, Bureau of the Census. National Archives and Records Administration, Record Group 29. Micropublication T623."

However, there is no information about the Roll number, Enumeration District, or page number on the record summary.  The Enumeration district and the page number can be found on the record image, however.

When I clicked on "View Census Images," I saw the record image:

Although I searched for Isaac Seaver, the census page has his wife Elvira Seaver highlighted for some reason.   There is a person index at the bottom of the image, which can be suppressed.  The image can be zoomed in and out using the blue plus and minus icons in the left-hand margin. The magnifying glass in the right-hand margin is to search for other records for the person on Mocavo.  The user can move to the previous or next page of the census using the left and right arrow at the top right of the image.

When I put "1823" in the birth year field, the search did not find the 1900 census which clearly shows Isaac's birth date as "Oct 1823."  When I put "1824" in the birth year field, I received matches for the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records for the correct Isaac Seaver.  It would help if the Search field allowed a range of birth years (e.g., plus/minus 1, 2, 5 or 10 years) like other search engines provide.

The above are minor problems that will probably be corrected over time.

The key point here is that this is the only genealogy website where a researcher can search the U.S. Census records for FREE, and see the record image for FREE.

First Look at SCGS Genealogy Jamboree 2015 Mobile App

The Southern California Genealogical Society's 2015 Genealogy Jamboree is coming in less than two weeks - June 5-7, at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport hotel in Burbank, California.  I posted information about it recently in SCGS Genealogy Jamboree is June 4-7, 2015 in Burbank.

The Mobile App for the Genealogy Jamboree 2015 is available for iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows smart phones and tablets.  The Mobile App page with information is at  http://genealogyjamboree.com/2015/mobile-app.html:

The web page says:

"Plan your weekend at Jamboree.
  • Preview all of the classes by reading the descriptions.
  • Browse day by day, or do a search by topic or experience level.
  • Download the dozens of syllabus articles available through the app and print them for use.
  • Look up your favorite speakers and review the sessions they are teaching.
  • Select your sessions and add them to your own personal schedule to keep organized.
  • Explore the exhibit hall from the comfort of your couch long before the doors open.
  • Do you have questions for speakers or exhibitors? Ask them in advance.
"Stay in touch before, during and after Jamboree.
  • Create your profile so others know you're attending
  • Connect with your friends and send messages.
  • Share your class schedule if you'd like others to know where to find you.
  • Receive breaking news texts from the Jamboree staff about schedule changes, etc.
  • Sync the app across multiple devices.
  • Twitter users, send and read tweets from within the app.
  • Keep up with the Jamboree blog.
  • Provide your feedback on speaker sessions directly from the app."
I downloaded the Mobile app to my iPhone, and created my profile, and selected my classes.  When I downloaded the app, the first screen I saw was:

This quickly changed to the Dashboard:

The Dashboard has buttons for:

*  Classes
*  My Schedule
*  Speakers
*  Exhibitors
*  Attendees
*  Maps
*  Show Documents
*  Jamboree Blog
*  Downloads
*  Social Media
*  Pinterest

When you tap on any of the buttons the first time, information appears to help you understand the function of that button.

I tapped on the "Classes" button and was able to select my classes for each time period.  By selecting a class, I could see the speaker's name, the title of the talk, the date, time and venue of the talk, the synopsis of the talk, the speaker biography, the tracks, and the handout.  Here is the screen one of my selected classes:

On the left side, I can tap on the star to select this class.  Here is a screen from Friday that shows my selected classes:

Note the PDF icon on most of the class listings - this denotes that there is a PDF handout that can be downloaded to the mobile app.

Tapping on the "My Schedule" button on the Dashboard shows me all of my selected classes:

Note that the class venue is provided on the screen above.

I was intrigued by the "Social media" button - what will I find there?  Here is a screen shot when I tapped on it:

Apparently, if someone posts on the Facebook page for Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, or used the hashtag #SNGS2015 on Twitter, the posts will be on the "Social Media" page.

I may explore a few more of the Mobile App features in a future post.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The biography and family information for Humphrey White is included in the article by Ruth Wilder Sherman, "Some Descendants of Jonathan White of Dartmouth MA and of Humphrey White of Glocester RI," The American Genealogist, Volume 56, Pages 113-118.[1]

Humphrey White was born in about 1757 in Westport, Massachusetts, the son of Jonathan and Abigail (Wing) White.  He is mentioned in the 1804 will of his father, Jonathan White.[1]

The Dartmouth, Massachusetts town record book has this marriage entry for Humphrey White and Sibel Kirby:[11,12]

"[Kirby] Sibbel and Humphry White both of Dartmouth, Feb. 11, 1786"

In the 1790 U.S. Census, the Humphry White household in Westport, Bristol County, Massachusetts, included:[2]

*  one free white male over age 16
*  one free white male under age 16
*  3 free white females

On 27 February 1794, Humphry White of Dartmouth, yeoman, received 103 acres of land in Dartmouth from his parents, Jonathan and Abigail White of Dartmouth, "inconsideration of love and good will I do bear for my son Humphry White."  The land was in the town of Westport, west of the Assonet River near Hires Bridge.[3]

On 26 March 1794, Humphry White of Westport, with wife Sibel also signing, sold the 103 acres of land he had received from his father, Jonathan White, to Eli Handy, physician, for $2,810.[3]

On 11 April 1794, Humphry White purchased a 224 acre farm in Glocester, Rhode Island from John Pray for 1,080 pounds lawful money. This house at 751 Reynolds Road, on the west side of Route 94,  West Glocester, RI, is still standing.

On 3 December 1795, Humphrey White of Glocester, R.I., yeoman, sold 21 acres of land in Dartmouth, to Thomas Cornell and Peleg Cook for $230, with wife Sybil releasing her dower.[4]

Humphrey and Sibyl (Kirby) White had ten children born between 1787 and 1807, first in Dartmouth and then in Glocester.  At least nine of the ten married and outlived their father.

In the 1800 U.S. Census, the Humphry White family resided in Glocester, Providence County, Rhode Island.  The household included:[5]

*  two males under age 10
*  one male aged 10 to 15
*  one male over age 45
*  three females under age 10
*  one female aged 10 to 15
*  one female over age 45

In the 1810 U.S. Census, the Humphrey White family resided in Glocester, Providence County, Rhode Island.  The household included:[6]

*  three males under age 10
*  one male aged 10 to 15
*  two males aged 16 to 25
*  one male over age 45
*  two females under age 10
*  one female aged 10 to 15
*  two females aged 16 to 25
*  one female over age 45

According to the inventory taken of the estate of Humphrey White, he died on 15 January 1814 in Glocester.[7,8]

The gravestone in Acotes Hill Cemetery in Glocester, Rhode Island has this inscription:[9]

Humphrey White
1757 - 1814

Humphrey White of Glocester RI died intestate. There are three records of guardianship for his children, an inventory, and records for administration of his estate.[7,10]

a)  The guardianship record for four minor children is:

"Know all men by these presents, that we William Arnold, William Tourtellot, Samuel Steere Junr, William Wade Junr, William Hawkins Junr, Hasait Peckham and Abraham Baker --

"Do by these presents, in the name of the State of Rhode Island & Providence Plantations, and by virtue of the law in said state, Empowering the Courts of Probate to appoint Guardians, when the Court thinks proper, over certain persons and their Estates, and we now think it proper, for the benefit of Rhoda White, Jonathan White, William White and Nancy White, all of said Glocester under lawfull age, and children of Humphrey White late of Glocester deceased.

"Therefore, we the said Court of Probate have, and do hereby appoint you Sibel White of said Glocester, and you are hereby appointed a proper and lawfull Guardian, over the persons and Estate of the said Rhoda, Jonathan, William and Nancy, with full power to do everything that is right and just according to Law, relating the duty of a Guardian respecting the aforesaid premises.

"We hereby relying on your strict justice and integrity in and about said premises, and that you hold yourself at all times ready to make and render a just and true account of all your doings, by virtue of the power herein given you unto the said children, & otherwise make and render such account in the premises as the Law in such cases made and provided doth direct, whenever legally called thereunto.  Given per order and in behalf of the said Court of Probate, with their seal hereunto affixed this 12th day of February A.D. 1814."

b)  A similar guardianship for four children of lawful age, David White, Elisabeth White, Humphrey White and Martha White, all of Glocester and children of Humphrey White late of Glocester deceased.  Joseph Cady of Glocester was appointed a proper and legal Guardian of the persons and Estates of the four children.  This guardianship was appointed on 12 February 1814.

c)  The inventory was taken by Joseph Cady, David Arnold, and William Stone.  It is four pages long with double columns, and amounts to $2,568.89.  It was accepted, allowed and recorded on 16 March 1814.

"A true and proper inventory  of all the goods, chattels, rights and credits and personal estate that belonged to Humphrey White late of Glocester in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, at the time of his decease, who departed this life on the 15th day of January AD 1814.  That was set forth by the Administrators and apprised by us the subscribers on the 21st, 22d & 23d days of February AD 1814, viz:"

d)  On 15 March 1814, Sibel White and Benjamin White were appointed administrators of the estate of Humphrey White by the Court of Probate in Glocester.  They were given "...full power to ask for, gather, recover & receive, all and whatsoever goods, Chattels, Wares, Merchandise, rights, credits, effects and things and the whole personal estate whatever which to the said Humphrey White while he lived, and at the time of his death  did appertain and belong."

e)  On 19 April 1815, Benjamin White was appointed guardian of Humphrey White, under lawful age.

No record of the administrators account or the distribution of the personal estate was recorded in the Court of Probate.
