Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1678 Marriage Record of William Hawkins and Lydia Gardiner in Providence, Rhode Island

 It's time to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings for Treasure Chest Thursday.

The treasure today is the 1678 marriage intentions record of William Hawkins and Lydia Gardiner in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island:

The marriage record is at the top of the Hawkins section:

The transcription of this marriage record is:

"1-450  HAWKINS William, of Providence, and Lydia Gardiner, of Newport (intention), June 1, 1678"

The source citation for this record is:

James N. Arnold, Vital Record of Rhode Island, 1636-1850, First Series, Births, Marriages and Deaths : a Family Register for the People (Providence, R.I.: Narragansett Historical Publishing Co., 1891-1912), "Vol.02, Providence County Births, Marriages, Deaths," Providence Marriages, page 90 (image 120 of 440, William Hawkins and Lydia Gardiner marriage intentions entry, 1 June 1678.

This record is a Derivative Source, with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the marriage of William Hawkins and Lydia (Ballou) Gardiner (the widow of George Gardiner).  The original record is probably in a Providence town record book that is not extant.

William Hawkins (1647-1723) was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of William and and Margaret (Harwood) Hawkins.  Lydia (Ballou) Gardiner was born in about 1649 in Providence, the daughter of Robert and Susanna (--?--) Ballou.  They married after 1 June 1678 in Providence.  They had 4 children.

William and Lydia (Ballou) (Gardiner) Hawkins are my 8th great-grandparents.  I am descended through their son William Hawkins (1679-1712) who married in 1704 in Providence, Rhode Island.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

William Hawkins was born in about 1676 in Providence, Rhode Island, the son and eldest child of John and Sarah (Daniels?) Hawkins[1]. There is no extant birth record for William Hawkins.

He married Mary --?-- before 1710.  Mary's parents are not known.  There is no extant marriage record.  They had six children, all born in Providence but there are no extant records[1]:

*  Mary Hawkins (1710-1767), married 1728 John Tracy (1695-1751).
*  John Hawkins (1711-1740).
*  Jeriah Hawkins (1713-1751), married 1735 Amey Olney (1716-1808).
*  Job Hawkins (1715-1790), married 1747 Catherine Turpin (1719-1749).

On 19 October, 1715, Father John Hawkins gave free consent to sons William Hawkins, Hosannah Brown, and Elisha Knowlton to sell all their lands which they had of him[1].

On 14 December 1716 "William Hawkins, Jr., son of John" sold 5 acres to Joshua Winsor[1].

On 6 March 1721, William and wife Mary sold land to Elisha Knowlton (a brother-in-law) for 60 pounds[1].

On 26 June 1724, William Hawkings of Providence and Smithfield, husbandman, sold land to Daniel Angell of Providence, for 4 pounds and 10 shillings 10 acres of land not yet laid out on the east side of Seven Mile line, part of the original right of his grandfather, William Hawkings, deceased.  This deed pertained to an original sale of property made from William Hawkings to Daniel Angel on June 26, 1724.  This deed acknowledges that William made the sale, and he personally appeared before Thomas Steere, Justice of the Peace in Smithfield on December 13, 1752[2].  William Hawkings signed with his signature.  The witnesses were Jonathan Salisbury and John Tracy (his sons-in-law). This William Hawkinks is the only William Hawkings of age to make a land sale in 1724, and alive in 1752[2].

On 7 January 1744, William deeded land to his son Job, for love, including rights to land west of Seven-Mile Line[1].

William Hawkins died after 13 December 1752, probably in Smithfield, Rhode Island.  There are no extant death, burial, or probate records.

Elizabeth Arnold was born about 1684 in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of Eleazer and Eleanor (Smith) Arnold[1].

She married William Hawkins (1679-1712) on 14 December 1704 in Providence, Rhode Island[2-3].  He was the son of William and Lydia (Ballou) Hawkins of Providence.  They had five children, all born in Providence:

*  Elijah Hawkins (1705-1754), married (1) 1724 Abigail Vallet (1706-1735) and (2) 1735 Jemima Salisbury (1700-1754).

After her first husband, William Hawkins, died in 1712, Elizabeth married (2) Israel Smith (1690-1727) in Providence on 3 June 1718[1,4].  Israel was a cooper.  They had four children together from 1719 to 1724 in Providence:

Israel died 20 January 1726/7, intestate, and Elizabeth was again a widow with about seven living minor children. There is no known burial place or record.

Widow Elizabeth (Arnold) (Hawkins) Smith of Glocester died testate, on 11 July 1758 in Glocester, Rhode Island, according to the estate inventory.  She wrote her will dated 1 July 1758.  The will was proved on 17 July 1758[6].  The will reads (from a clerk's copy in the Glocester town records):

Biographical data and family information about William Hawkins was obtained from the book:  Richard H. Benson, The Arnold Family of Smithfield, Rhode Island (Boston, Mass., Newbury Street Press, 2009), pages 62-64[1].

William Hawkins was born about 1679 in Providence, the eldest child of William and Lydia (Ballou) (Gardiner) Hawkins, who were married in 1678[1].

He married Elizabeth Arnold (1684-1758) on 14 December 1704 in Providence, Rhode Island[1-3].  She was the daughter of Eleazer and Eleanor (Smith) Arnold of Providence.  They had five children:

*  Elijah Hawkins (1705-1754), married (1) 1724 Abigail Vallett (1706-1735) and (2) 1735 Jemima Salisbury (1700-1754).
*  Uriah Hawkins (1707-1708).
*  Joseph Hawkins (1709-1754), married 1729 Mary Smith (1705-????).
*  Ruth Hawkins (1711-1789), married (1) 1731 Nathaniel Wade (1709-1754) and (2) 1758 Zebedee Hawkins (1697-189.
*  Deborah Hawkins (1713-1802), married 1731 Nathan Wade (1706-1778).

William died on 8 October 1712, intestate, at age 33 in Providence, leaving his wife and four small children[1,4].

The administration of his estate was granted to his wife, Elizabeth, on 9 December 1712[1,5].  The inventory of his estate totaled 110 pounds, 10 pence, and included: four cows, two steers, a mare, two colts, swine, 200 pounds of tobacco, a cider mill, a gun, two spinning sheets, six barrels of cider, meat in the cellar, soap, a warming pan, books, etc.

His burial site might be in the Hawkins lot in Glocester, Rhode Island, where his son Elijah was buried. If so, it is unmarked. That might be a likely grave location.

William Hawkins Jr. was mentioned in the will of his father, William Hawkins (1647-1723) of Providence, dated 17 March 1721/2[1].  William Jr. was said to be deceased, and the will mentions the sons Elijah and Joseph, sons of William, deceased.

Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1704 Marriage Record for William Hawkins and Elizabeth Arnold in Providence, Rhode Island

 It's time to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings for Treasure Chest Thursday.

The treasure today is the 1704 marriage record of William Hawkins and Elizabeth Arnold in Providence, Rhode Island:

The marriage record is the third one on the Hawkins list:

The transcription of this record is:

"HAWKINS William Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold, Dec. 14, 1704"

The source citation for this record is:

 James N. Arnold, Vital Record of Rhode Island, 1636-1850, First Series, Births, Marriages and Deaths : a Family Register for the People (Providence, R.I.: Narragansett Historical Publishing Co., 1891-1912), "Volume 2: Providence County Birth, Marriages, Deaths," page 7, Elizabeth Arnold and William Hawkins marriage entry, 14 December 1704.

This record is a Derivative Source, with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the marriage of William Hawkins and Elizabeth Arnold,  The Original Source is probably a Providence, Rhode Island book that is not now extant online.

William Hawkins (1679-1712) was born in Providence, the son of William and Lydia (Ballou) Hawkins.  He died on 8 October  1712 in Providence.  He married Elizabeth Arnold (1684-1758) on 14 December 1704.  She was the daughter of Eleazer and Eleanor (Smith) Arnold.  They had five children born between 1705 and 1713.

William and Elizabeth (Smith) Hawkins are my 7th great-grandparents.  I am descended through their daughter Ruth Hawkins (1710-1789), who married Nathaniel Wade (1708-1754) in 1731 in Scituate, Rhode Island.

1728 Marriage Record of John Tracy and Mary Hawkins in Providence, Rhode Island - Post 423 for Treasure Chest Thursday

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1728 marriage birth record of John Tracy and Mary Hawkins in the Providence, Rhode Island town records:

The  marriage record is:

The transcription of the marriage record is:

"TRACY, John, and Mary Hawkins; m. by Elisha Knowlton, Justice, Jan. 2, 1727-8."

The source citation for this record is:

"Rhode Island, Vital Records Extracts, 1636-1899," indexed database and digital image, Ancestry.com(https://www.ancestry.com), Volume 2, "Providence County Births, Marriages and Deaths," Providence Marriages, page 188, John Tracy and Mary Hawkins marriage entry.

John Tracy (1695-1751) was the son of John and Deborah (--?--) Tracy of Providence, and Mary Hawkins was the daughter of William and Mary (--?--) Hawkins of Providence.

This marriage record is, I believe, a derivative source copy of the original town records in the Providence town record books.  The original record can be in Volume 1, page 91, of the Providence Town Record books.

John and Mary (Hawkins) Tracy are my 6th great-grandparents.  I am descended from their son daughter Deborah Tracy (1731-after 1800) who married Simon Wade (1731-after 1800) in about 1763 and resided in Foster, Rhode Island.
