Amanuensis Monday - 1749 Guardianship of Isaac Brown and John Brown in Eastham, Massachusetts

This week's document for Amanuensis Monday is the 1749 guardianship record in the probate court records for Isaac and John Brown, sons of Samuel Brown (1686-1749), late of Eastham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts:

The record for John Brown, on pages 139-140,  is almost identical and won't be reproduced here.

The source citation for this record is:

Barnstable county, Massachusetts, Probate Records, 1686-1894, digital images, FamilySearch  ( : accessed 10 December 2017), "Probate Records, Vol. 6-7, 1740-1774," pages 137-139 (images 379-380 of 591), guardianship of Isaac Brown, 1749.

Isaac Brown and John Brown were minor children (estimated to be ages 19 and 17) at the time of the death of their father, Samuel Brown (1686-1749) of Eastham, Massachusetts.  In these documents, their mother, Ruth (Young) Brown, was appointed to be their guardian until they reached the age of 21.

I transcribed the following for Samuel Brown's probate records:

When I wrote the biography of Ruth (Young) Brown last Friday in 52 Ancestors - Week 204: #283 Ruth (Young) Brown (1688-1768) of Eastham, Massachusetts, I realized that I had not found any probate records for her, so I checked the Probate Index for her and found no listings, but when I checked the Probate Index for Samuel Brown, the Guardianship records were included.

Samuel and Ruth (Young) Brown are my 6th great-grandparents, through their daughter Mehitable Brown who married Thomas Dill in 1733.

NOTE:  Genea-blogger John Newmark (who writes the excellent  TransylvanianDutch blog) started a Monday blog theme years ago called "Amanuensis Monday."  John offers this definition for "amanuensis:"

"A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another."
