Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Did Any Of Your Ancestors Suffer the Loss of a Parent At a Young Age?

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Come on, everybody, join in and accept the mission and execute it with precision.

1)  Do you have ancestors who suffered the loss of one or both parents early in their life?  Did the surviving parent remarry soon after one parent died?  Was a guardian appointed for your ancestor to protect their physical or legal interests?

2)  Tell us about one or two of your "orphaned" ancestors and how this affected their life.

3)   Share a link to your blog post, or your Facebook Status post, on this post.

Here's mine:

The ancestor that immediately came to mind for me is my 2nd great-grandfather, Isaac Seaver (1823-1901) of Westminster, Massachusetts.  His father, Benjamin Seaver (1791-1825) died at age 34, leaving his wife, Abigail (Gates) Seaver (1797-1867), with four small chldren, ages 0 to 8.  The probate papers for the estate of Benjamin Seaver are in his genealogical sketch (52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 25: #32, Benjamin Seaver (1791-1825)).   The petition of the widow and ensuing estate transactions are described in Amanuensis Monday - Petition of Abigail Seaver.  Abigail was appointed guardian of the children, the widow's thirds were set apart, the estate was declared insolvent, land was sold, and the final account provided the widow with $29.13 "to the Widow of said deceased to enable her to uphold life" in 1827.  The four children received a small portion of land and a house worth $30.  In 1832, Abigail (Gates) Seaver married Benjamin's brother, Isaac Seaver (1802-1870) and raised her children, and had two children with Isaac Seaver.  Isaac Seaver (1823-1901) took a guardian in 1838 at the age of 14, choosing his uncle Jeremiah Knowlton Gates, a brother of his mother.

I don't know how Abigail kept the family together;  she probably received support from the close Seaver and Gates aunts and uncles of young Isaac Seaver, and perhaps the children did farm work or household work for neighbors and friends to support the family.

I'm sure Isaac felt the loss of his father deeply when it occurred at age 2.  He likely became very self sufficient in his youth and learned the blacksmith trade.

Wouldn't we all love to have a time machine and ask these special peopple in our lives how tey survived events like this that disrupted the family.

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

52 Relatives: Great-Grandaunt Anna Mattison (Auble) Buntin (1859-1913) of New Jersey, Indiana, and Illinois

Anna Mattison Auble was born 24 February 1859 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, the 5th child and 3rd daughter of David and Sarah G. (Knapp) Auble.[1-2]

In the 1860 United States census, the David Auble family resided in the Fourth Ward of Newark,  Essex County, New Jersey.[3]  The family included:

  • David Auble -- age 42, male, worked in a shoe store, had personal property of $500, born NJ

The David Auble moved from Newark, New Jersey to Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana in about 1865.

In the 1870 United States census, the Daniel Auble family resided in Terre Haute city, Vigo County, Indiana.[4]  The household included:

  • Daniel Auble (perhaps this is a census taker's error for David, it is obviously the David Auble family) -- age 53, male, a boot and shoemaker, with $2,500 in real estate and $200 in personal property, born NJ
  • Sarah Auble -- age 50, female, keeping house, born NJ

  • Cora Auble -- age 8, female, at home, born NJ, attended school

In the 1880 US census, the David Auble family resided at 40 Chestnut Street in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana.[6]  The household included:

  • David Auble -- white, male, age 63, married, shoemaker, born NJ, father and mother born NJ
  • Sarah G. Auble -- white, female, age 62, wife, married, keeps house, born NJ, father born NY, mother born NJ)
  • Charles Auble -- white, male, age 30, son, single, painter, born NJ, parents born NJ

  • Anna M. Auble -- white, female, age 20, daughter, single, at home, born NJ, parents born NJ

Anna Mattison Auble married Henry Shannon Buntin on 7 December 1888 in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana.[1,6]  Henry was born in March 1856 in Indiana, the son of Touissant Campbell and Emma (Steele) Buntin.  Henry died in 1904 in Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinois, leaving Anna with three young children. The children were:

  • David Campbell Buntin, born 25 November 1889 in Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinois, died 14 May 1952 in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois.  He married Josephine Norcross on 16 April 1913 in Alabama.  She was born 17 July 1890 in Illinois, and died 8 October 1984 in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois.
  • Henry Shannon Buntin, born 23 April 1895 in Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinos, died 15 April 1963 in Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinos.  He married Ruth King (1898-1981) on 27 December 1919 in Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois.  She was born 12 May 1898 in Illinois, and died in September 1981 in Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinois.
  • Catharine Buntin (1897-1992), born 14 May 1897 in Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinois, died 2 August 1992 in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California.  She married Willism Seaver Deeming (1900-1993).  He was born 26 March 1900 in Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri, and died 19 September 1993 in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California.

In the 1900 United States Census, the Henry S. Buntin family resided in Ward 1, Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinois on Washington Street.  The household included:

                                         ===================================

Anna Mattison (Auble) Buntin  (1859-1913) is my great-grandaunt and the sister of my great-grandfather, Charles Auble (1849-1916).

I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents and a number of close relatives - see the list in 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies.

The "52 Relatives" theme is a weekly series to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short genealogical sketches, including important events, and with source citations.  These relatives lived and died within a family structure, and deserve a genealogical sketch - they were integral parts and important persons in the lives of my ancestral families.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree, WikiTree, and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.

Improving My Family Tree Profiles - Historical Place Names and Narrative Sketches

While I have written over 500 genealogical sketches of my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents (well, most of them - see 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies), I still have almost 2,000 known ancestors from earlier times.  I have family relationships (parents, spouses, children, etc.), research notes, events, and sources for most of them in the RootsMagic (now Version 10) family tree management desktop software program I use, but most of the profiles of these early ancestors have two significant flaws:

  • I have not used "historical place names" for localities where the people resided - my standard has always been to use "current place names" so that they appear on the map in RootsMagic.
  • I have not included a complete list of the events, parents, spouses, children and sources that I have used to document these earlier ancestors in the "Person General Notes" in RootsMagic.

1)  I'm working to convert the current place names to historical place names when appropriate (e.g., "Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States" is the current plance name, but before 1776 the historical place name was "Medfield, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America").

This will be a long slog because I have over 73,000 persons in my database, and 10,000 or more of them were living after 1620 and before 1776.  I have resisted doing this for 20 years or more (because then I had over 40,000 person profiles), and I decided I should do this now rather than do it later (later may come sooner than I hope).

This is a task that needs to be performed for a lot of profiles, and I am doing a hundred or more profiles a week as time allows.  So far, I have done it for ancestors, and not siblings/spouses of my ancestors.  Realistically, I will never finish this task because of the volume of conversions needed.

As an example, here is the "Family View" on the "People" menu in RootsMagic for the John Hubbard (1630-1702) family:

You can see that the birth, marriage and death locations are in "current place name" form.  Here is the Person Profile page for John Hubbard (1630-1702) after I converted the events to "historical place names," and showing the "General Person Note" on the right side of the screen:

I have very few source citations on the screen above - I need to do more research on this person and add events, sources and media, and eventually a genealogical sketch.

2)  To create a more complete list of the events, parents, spouses, children and sources I have started creating a "Narrative Report" for one generation in RootsMagic for the family, based on the "current thinking" and state of my research.

Here is the created Narrative Report for John Hubbard (1630-1702) in RootsMagic:

I save this report to my RootsMagic Report files as a text file, and then copy and paste the information to the top of the "Person General Note" in RootsMagic, so it looks like this:

The value here is that I didn't have to type any of this again - over time I have input information and edited it - and can let RootsMagic do the job.

I do edit the resulting "Person General Note" slightly: if I know the parents of the persons, I add that to the Note;  At the end of the added narrative and sources list (not shown above) I add a heading for "========== RESEARCH NOTES  =============" to set them apart from the narrative report in the "Person General Note."

The entire task here takes 10 minutes at most, unless I actually do more research, add more events and sources, etc.

3)  If I live long enough, I can do more research, add more sources, and create a genealogical sketch with historical place names for each person.   I will have to update the "Person General Note" but that is not a difficult task to do.

The profiles, the notes, and the sources are still imperfect - they will never be perfect - but at least the ancestor profiles will be consistent and reflect the level of research that I've found and conducted.

4)  Have you used or converted your locality names to "historical place names?"  Have you written a narrative report for each ancestor?  If so, please tell us your process.
