Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your Favorite Genealogy-Related YouTube Channels

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Come on, everybody, join in and accept the mission and execute it with precision.

1)  Do you watch YouTube videos on a regular basis?  What are your favorite YouTube channels for genealogy research?

2) Tell us about your favorite YouTube channels in your own blog post, in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook Status  post.  Please leave a link on this post if you write your own post.

Here's mine:

Ever since I started writing Genealogy Education Bytes, I have been monitoring specific YouTube channels that pertain to genealogy and family history.  I now have 114 channels on my watch list.

The YouTube channels that I never miss include:

DearMYRTLE's Archive -- I participate in this almost every program and try to contribute to the discussion.

BYU Library Family History -- this channel often has two or three hour-long sessions each week, many of them related to FamilySearch.

LisaLisson -- Lisa has excellent research topics in a 10 to 20 minute video each week.

Genealogy TV -- Connie Knox has excellent reasearch topics in a 10 to 30 minute video each week.

Aimee Cross - Genealogy Hints -- Aimee has excellent research topics in a 10 to 20 minute video each week.

Family Locket -- Diana Elder and Nicole Dyer have excellent research topics (especially DNA and AI) in a 5 to 30 minute video (or podcast) each week.

Your DNA Guide -- Diahan Southard often has DNA-related videos on her channel that are very helpful.

I keep finding new channels - usually from a reference on Facebook or in a blog post.  There are many genealogy-related channels - almost every genealogy company has a channel, some channels are "once in awhile," other channels are dormant, but may return.  I wish that there were more AI-related channels - maybe there will be more in months to come.

I much prefer genealogy video to podcasts - I learn best by watching how to do something and not listening to someone describe how to do something.

I usually don't watch every minute of every channel - I often speed-watch looking at graphics, but do listen to how-to videos that can help me perform a task.

Is This My Grandfather's Car in 1922?

 Until now, I didn't know what kind of car my maternal grandfather, Lyle L. Carringer (1891-1976) drove in the 1920 time frame.  I knew he had a car, I even have photos of the car with my mother as a baby (see Betty On the Carringer Car in 1919 -- Post 673 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday).  I thought that the car was probably a Model-T Ford.

I was wrong.  Now I think it was a 1919 Chevrolet Touring Car, like this one:

How do I know?  Well, Ancestry.com has a new genealogy record collection called "California, U.S., Registrations of Motor Vehicles, 1905-1922."  I searched this collection for "Carringer" and found several, including my grandfather.  Here is the top of the page with his record for 1922:

Whew.  that is really a name and data rich page, isn't it.  The headings for each column are for License No., Engine No., Year of Car, Make, Model, Owner, Owner's Address, County Key No.

Note that all of the entries have only initials for given names, and abbreviations for street names to make it all fit on one line.  Different years in this database have different headings.

Lyle's entry is in the lower right-hand corner of the page:

So the information for him includes:

* License No.: 648399
* Engine No.: c1906
* Year of Car: 19 [meaning 1919]
* Make: Chev[rolet]
* Model: Trg [Touring]
* Owner: CarringerLL
* Owner's Address: 2054Hrrisn SanDiego [Harrison Ave.]
* County Key No.: 37

Apparently, that is my grandfather's car in 1922.  But is it the car in the photograph with my mother as a baby?  I don't think so - that may be a Model-T.  Or another car.  Why? Because the fender above the wheel is different from my mother's photo and the car photo of the 1919 Chevolet Touring Car at the top of this post.

Not saitisfied with only this record, I searched the database for my great-grandfather's car also.  He had entries in 1914, 1915, 1917, 1921 and 1922.  In 1914 he had a 1914 Ford Touring car with 22.5 hp;  In 1917 he had a Ford Touring car; in 1922 he had a 1914 Ford Touring car.  It must have served him well!

That is a 1914 Ford Model-T Touring Car.  And that looks like the car in the baby photo. So the mystery is resolved - my mother was sitting on her grandfather's car in 1919!  Lyle probably learned to drive on this car, and eventually bought his 1919 Chevrolet Touring car by 1922.

Well, that was fun to solve the mystery of "what car did my grandfather drive in 1919 and 1922?"

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

52 Relatives: Great-Granduncle Devier David Smith (1863-1920) of Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and San Diego

Devier David "Davie" Smith was born 15 October 1863 in Rolling Prairie, Dodge County, Wisconsin, the first son and second child of Devier James and Abigail A. (Vaux) Smith.  The birth was recorded in the Devier J. and Abbey A. (Vaux) Bible[1] and in Abbey A. Smith's list of births and deaths.[2]

The family moved to Benton, Taylor County, Iowa in about 1867, and then to Cloud County, Kansas in about 1875, and finally to McCook, Red Willow County, Nebraska in 1885.

In the 1870 United States census, the Devier Smith family resided in Benton township, Taylor County, Iowa.[3]  The family included:

  • Devier Smith -- age 30, male, white, a farmer, $10,000 in real property, $800 in personal property, born New York
  • Abbie Smith -- age 26, female, white, keeping house, born NY
  • Della Smith -- age 8, female, white, at home, born WI, attended school
  • David Smith -- age 6, male, white, at home, born WI, attended school
  • Mary Smith -- age 4, female, white, at home, born WI

In the 1875 Kansas State census, the D.J. Smith family resided in Lincoln township, Cloud County, Kansas.[4] The household included:

  • D.J. Smith - age 35, male, white, livery and sale stable, $750 in real property, $1155 in personal property, born NY, moved from MO
  • Abbie A. Smith - age 30, female, white, milliner, $340 in personal property, born NY, moved from MO
  • D A Smith - age 13, female, white, born WI, moved from MO
  • D.D. Smith - age 11, male, white, born WI, moved from MO
  • M A Smith - age 8, female, white, born MO, moved from WI

In the 1880 United States census, the D.J. Smith family was listed in Shannon township, Pottawatomie County, Kansas.[5]  The household included:

  • D.J. Smith -- white, male, age 41, married, no occupation, born NY, father and mother born NY
  • Abba A. Smith -- white, female, age 37, wife, married, keeping house, born NY, father born England, mother born NY
  • David D. Smith -- white, male, age 16, son, single, born WI, father and mother born NY
  • Mami Smith -- white, female, age 14, daughter, single, born WI, father and mother born NY
  • E. Kearnes -- white, male, age 21, single, born IA
  • Jos. P. Vaux -- white, male, age 35, brother-in-law, single, born NY, father born England, mother born NY
In the 1885 Kansas State census, the D.J. Smith family resided in Clyde township, Cloud County, Kansas).[6]  The household included:

  • D.J. Smith - age 46, male, white, married, a speculator, born Ohio, moved from WI
  • Abby A. Smith - age 41, female, white, married, born NY, moved from WI
  • Della Smith - age 23, female, white, a music teacher, born WI, moved from WI
  • D.D. Smith - age 21, male, white, a livery keeper, born WI, moved from WI
  • Matie Smith - age 18, female, white, a music teacher, born WI, moved from WI

Devier David (known also as David, Davie or D.D.) Smith was active in his father's businesses as he grew up.  In the 1885 Kansas census, he was a livery keeper.  When they moved to McCook, Nebraska, he worked at his father's livery stable before his marriage.

Devier David Smith married, first, to Leava A. Smith on 20 June 1889 in McCook, Red Willow County, Nebraska.[7-8]  Leava was born 26 March 1866 in Pineville, McDonald County, Missouri, the daughter of Zachariah and Nancy (Gosney) Smith.  Leava died 21 January 1959 in San Diego, San Diego County, California.  Davie and Leava (Smith) Smith had one child:

  • Eva Etta Smith, born 6 May 1890 in McCook, Red Willow, Nebraska.  She married (1) Howard Mixon DeFrance (1891-1937) on 2 March 1914 in San Diego, San Diego County, California.  He was born 13 July 1891 in San Diego, San Diego County, California and died 15 March 1937 in San Diego, San Diego County, California..  Eva married (2) Alonzo Rex Jones before 1940 in San Diego, San Diego County, California.  Alonzo was born 31 December 1894 in San Diego, San Diego County, California, and died 8 November 1976 in Riverside County, California.  Eva died of suicide by asphyxiation on 14 March 1940 in San Diego, San Diego County, California.  She is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego.

A letter from David D. Smith in McCook to his mother, Abigail (Vaux) Smith in National City in June 1889 noted that he had married a woman named Leava on 20 May 1889 in McCook, and that Leava's family resided in Jefferson County, Colorado at the time.

Devier David Smith owned and ran the Blue Front Livery Stable in McCook, Red Willow County, Nebraska in the time period 1888-1897.  When his father died on 1 May 1894 in McCook, Nebraska, Davie was the only family member in McCook at the time and handled his father's death and burial.  He inherited the livery stable in downtown McCook, and eventually sold it.

David and Leava (Smith) Smith divorced in about 1895, probably in McCook, Nebraska.  D.D. Smith's Livery is still shown on the 1897 Sanborn Map for McCook, Nebraska.

David D. Smith was not found in the 1900 United States census, despite concerted efforts using different given names (e.g., Dav*, Dev* and D.) and birth year and birth state in the every-name index on www.ancestry.com.

He moved to San Diego before 1902, and perhaps as early as 1897, to join with his mother, and sister Abbie Ardell "Della" (Smith) Carringer and her family. He lived in or near downtown San Diego between 1903 and 1909, according to the San Diego City Directories, and was listed as a driver for several hack companies.  Leava and Eva Etta Smith also moved to San Diego at some time.  Leava married (2) Joseph Walton DeFrance (1865-1937) in about 1908 in San Diego.

====================================

Devier David Smith (1863-1920) was my great-granduncle, the brother of my great-grandmother, Abbie Ardell "Della" (Smith) Carringer (1862-1944).

I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents and a number of close relatives - see the list in 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies.

This "52 Relatives" theme is a weekly series to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short genealogical sketches, including important events, and with source citations.  These relatives lived and died within a family structure, and deserve a genealogical sketch - they were integral parts and important persons in the lives of my ancestral families.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree, WikiTree, and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.
