Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Why Do Genealogy?

Hey genealogy buffs - it's Saturday Night - time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to:

1) Think about the question: "Why do I pursue genealogy and family history research?"

2) Tell us about it on your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, or in a comment on Facebook.

This question was prompted by a current ongoing discussion on the APG Public mailing List about celebrities and their relationship to royalty of famous historical persons. There are some excellent responses in this mailing list thread.

Here's why I pursue genealogy and family history research:

1) To honor the effort and lives of my ancestors.

2) To put my life into a historical perspective.

3) It is intellectually challenging and stimulating, and serious fun!

Your name conflict is interesting. I have somewhat the same situation with my great-grandmother. My mother told me her name was Caroline Sophie and that's what her Illinois marriage license says. In the Hamburg emigration records there is a woman listed as Dorothea Christina Frederike with the same birth date. In finding out more about the listed parents, both from online sources and a distant relative in Germany, I find that the number of my great-grandmother's siblings matches that given in a story about the family in the town history of the Nebraska town where she spent most of her adult years. I can only surmise that she changed her name for some reason....perhaps my great-grandfather left Germany without serving his military service and they didn't want a trail to lead back to him. Maybe I'll never know for sure.
