Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:
1) Learning about how to pursue genealogy and family history is a lifetime task. Once you've mastered one record type (census, church, certificates, probate, directories, immigration, etc), or one skill (family tree software program, record transcription, source citations, DNA matches, AI prompting, etc.), a new record, or skill, presents itself. With the constant advances in technology and knowledge, doing genealogy and family history well requires constant learning to do something new.
2) This week's challenge is to tell us a new genealogy-related skill that you have, or are working on, developing. Tell us about your progress. Are you having fun?
3) Share your latest genealogy-related skill and results in your own blog post or in a Facebook, SubStack, BlueSky or other social media post. Leave a link to your post on this blog post to help us find your post.
Here's mine:
Last year's new skills were using FamilySearch Full-Text Search to help my ongoing research and also using Artificial Intelligence tools to help me with my genealogy research and family history story-telling.
In the last two months, I've made an effort to learn how to make family history videos and put them on my long-ignored YouTube channel. The challenge is creating the content, and not the actual task of putting it on YouTube.
I have all of these stories about my own life, along with notes and reports about the lives of my ancestors, and now I have AI-assisted biographies, poems, songs, podcasts and stories about the lives of some of my ancestors.
How can I put them in an audio and/or video format that my brothers, children, cousins and grandchildren might be interested in? Can I create them using my own voice so that they can learn, and recall, the stories of their ancestors?
I tried making a Zoom video discussing the life of Isaac Seaver (1823-1901) along with reading a poem and playing the song about his life. That was just OK in my humble opinion - my public speaking limitations (hesitations, mutterings, etc.) without a script are painfully obvious, and the song music disappeared - you can watch the result in my video Isaac Seaver 1823 - 1901 Biography. My judgment was that I wasn't ready for YouTube primetime.
Using the artificial intelligence tool Google NotebookLM, I know that I can create an Audio Overview (like a podcast) of one of my blog posts (say a genealogical sketch, or a story of my own life), and just recently NotebookLM created a Video Overview feature. I love these features because they tell "my story" in a concise and interesting way. How can I turn them into a video on my YouTube channel?
Following Marcia Philbrick's suggestions, I started making videos of the AI-assisted songs (about 4 minutes) and podcasts (usually 10 to 20 minutes) using the Canva.com free tools. Each video uses a short biographical summary slide of the selected ancestor as the image (created on Canva) and attaches the AI-assisted song (from Suno.com) or the AI-assisted podcast (from NotebookLM) to the slide. I save the videos and can upload them to YouTube with an appropriate title and descriptive text. Here is one of the Canva-created song videos in Rebecca Hill Rich 1788 1862 AI-assisted Song on my YouTube channel:
On the songs, the music comes through on YouTube and the audio is better!
Is all of that "good enough?" I don't think so, and I will continue looking for something better that can use my own voice (e.g., perhaps an avatar voice that sounds like me and can read text that I've written - don't laugh, it can be done, I did it with EmulateMe 20 months ago. I want to tie the biography, poem, song, podcast and stories of a family together. The avatar reading feature exists, but there is a recurring fee to use it. Suggestions are welcome!!
What's next? Well, I still want to write eBooks to document my research, perhaps using the AI-assisted biographies, poems, songs, podcasts and stories for one ancestor, or for a string of ancestors (say, my Seaver line from Robert Seaver in 1608 to Randall Seaver in 1943). Maybe next year! Again, suggestions are welcome!!
Am I having genealogy fun? YES. And I'm learning much more about my ancestors and social history in this process as I take a deeper dive into the lives of my ancestors.

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week (ending Sunday, 27 July 2025).
1) Participated in Mondays With Myrt on 21 July. We discussed Ancestry.com's Club 1890, FamilySearch Full Text Search and the Research Wiki, and genealogical society benefits.
5) Wrote two "ABC Biographies" using my AI-assisted "Ancestor Biography Creation" process and an AI-assisted memoir, and posted them on Genea-Musings and Substack, in:
7) Requested free AI tools to create a poem, song lyrics and a podcast about my 3rd great-grandmother, Sarah (Feather) Carringer (1804-1848) and had Suno.com create a song using the lyrics. Posted the poem created by X Grok 3, the song lyrics created by Anthropic Claude Sonnet 4, the Suno song link, and the NotebookLM podcast link in"Sarah's Song"-- A Family History Poem, Song and Podcast Created by Artificial Intelligence on Genea-Musings and Substack.
9) Used Canva to create YouTube videos of several AI-assisted ancestor songs from Suno and the NotebookLM Podcasts. Created more videos using Canva and added them to YouTube. Summarized the currently available songs and podcasts in Adding Ancestor Songs and Podcasts To My YouTube Channel.
10) My AncestryDNA now has 49,577 DNA matches (up 45 from 20 July) with 2,103 "close" matches today (up 3), with one new ThruLines. Added Notes to 1 Match, and added no new DNA match lines to RootsMagic. MyHeritageDNA now has 13,675 DNA matches (up 17 from 20 July) for me. Reviewed the new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.
11) Searched for more records of ancestral families on Ancestry, FamilySearch and MyHeritage, downloaded record images to my digital file folders, and added research notes, events and sources to RootsMagic profiles. My RootsMagic family tree now has 74,654 profiles (up 7 from last week) and 147,827 source citations (up 6).
13) Real life events: Visited Linda several days at her memory care facility and we played Uno. Went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday. Lori came to visit on Saturday and Logan from Nebraska on Sunday, and we visited Linda, went out to dinner, etc. Lori is helping declutter again and cooking meals for me. Still readingHot Springs by Stephen Hunter. The Padres season continues and I watched the seven Padres games this week - they were 3-4 this past week (overall 57-49 now).

I have had a YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@RandySeaver) for several years now, and until recently it consisted only of uploaded silent home movies from the 1940s to 1970s.
I tried adding some of my Suno.com AI-assisted songs in MP4 format to my YouTube channel and it would not upload them. Then I tried making a Zoom video of an ABC Biography summary, plus reading the AI-assisted poem, and playing the Suno AI-assisted song. That worked, but the song music was distorted and haphazard. Google told me the music failure was because Zoom audio is compressed.
I took geneablogger Marcia Philbrick's advice and tried the free Canva.com system to play the AI-assisted songs (in MP4 video) and podcasts (in WAV audio) and that worked! Canva.com has a learning curve but now I can make a podcast audio or a song video in about 15 minutes. Thank you, Marcia!
To enrich the listening experience, and add to the visual experience, I have been adding a life summary slide to the Canva.com page for the songs and podcasts. Here is an image of one of the Song pages:
Here are the YouTube videos that I have added in the past week:
Needless to say, these are not big sellers on the YouTube hit parade. But they might entice my grandchildren to watch them in a bored scrolling session.
It looks like I'm actually begging for subscribers and views!
4) What is the long-term vision here? It still is a video discussion in my voice of an ABC Biography including photographs, maps, a poem reading, the AI-assisted song, and the AI-assisted podcast audio (with summary slide). That is likely to be more than the 30 minute limit on a free Canva video.
5) My perceived problem is that my voice in any video is weak and unsure (it's always been weak and unsure - I can't change now). I have too many ums and ahs and silent seconds. I've thought about using ElevenLabs.com to clone my own voice and use that to read the text to eliminate my ums and ahs, the embarrassing silent seconds while I think, plus the occasional expletive when things go wrong. I've often thought that I have a voice made for writing rather than audio and video.
6) My technical capabilities for dealing with audio and video are limited - I will probably never get to the point I can edit a video or insert funny images of video clips into my videos. But who knows? I told Lisa Louise Cooke in one of her first interview videos in 2008 that I would never do my own videos, and now here I am.

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week (ending Sunday, 20 July 2025).
1) Moderated and presented the 16 July DNA Interest Group meeting of the Chula Vista Genealogical Society with 14 in attendance. Reported on the AncestryDNA Cluster feature, the 23andMe Sale, and Family Locket YouTube videos.
5) Wrote two "ABC Biographies" using my AI-assisted "Ancestor Biography Creation" process and an AI-assisted memoir, and posted them on Genea-Musings and Substack, in:
8) Requested free AI tools to create a poem, song lyrics and a podcast about my 3rd great-grandfather, Jonathan Oatley (1790-1872) and had Suno.com create a song using the lyrics. Posted the poem created by X Grok 3, the song lyrics created by Anthropic Claude 4, the Suno song link, and the NotebookLM podcast link in"Henry Carringer's Journey" -- A Family History Poem, Song and Podcast Created by Artificial Intelligence on Genea-Musings and Substack.
10) Experimented with Canva to create YouTube videos of the NotebookLM Podcasts with help from Marcia Philbrick. Resurrected my YouTube channel too. Added two videos to YouTube for the Isaac Seaver and Henry Carringer podcasts. Tried using Zoom to create a video reviewing Isaac Seaver's ABC Biography, reading the poem, and playing the song, but the song did not go well - maybe I can use Canva for the song?
11) My AncestryDNA now has 49,532 DNA matches (up 40 from 13 July) with 2,100 "close" matches today (up 1), with no new ThruLines. Added Notes to 2 Matches, and added no new DNA match lines to RootsMagic. MyHeritageDNA now has 13,658 DNA matches (up 13 from 13 July) for me. Reviewed the new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.
12) Searched for more records of ancestral families on Ancestry, FamilySearch and MyHeritage, downloaded record images to my digital file folders, and added research notes, events and sources to RootsMagic profiles. My RootsMagic family tree now has 74,647 profiles (up 7 from last week) and 147,821 source citations (up 10).
13) Wrote 21 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which one was a press release. The most viewed post last week wasSaturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Do Some FamilySearch Full-Text Searchingwith over 216views. Genea-Musings had about 186,000page views last week and over 1,099,000 views over the past month (lots of bots I fear).
14) Real life events: Visited Linda several days at her memory care facility and we played Uno. Went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday. Still reading started Hot Springs by Stephen Hunter. The Padres season continues and I watched the All-Star game and three Padres games this week - they were 2-1 this past week (overall 54-45 now).
