Best of the Genea-Blogs - 12 to 18 April 2015

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  The Seven Dwarfs: Little Known Facts Uncovered Thanks to Ancestry.com by Granny on the On Granny's Trail blog.  LOL, excellent detective work!

*  Shhh!  A Secret List of Reasons to Attend Your Local Genealogy Conference by Heather Wilkinson Rojo on the Nutfield Genealogy blog.  Good ones, but not so secret any more, of course.

*  10 Tips on Successfully Researching in an Archive by Nichelle Barra on the Copper Leaf Genealogy blog.  Research road trips are coming, Nichelle has helpful tips.

*  Free Historic Book Collection Online  Hits 200,000th Milestone by Paul G. Nauta on the FamilySearch Blog.  This is great news!

*  The Weird and Wonderful Names of the English Puritans on the Genealogy Now blog.  Puritan names were unique in many ways.  Good list!

*  Orphan Trains a Missed Part of My American History by Jenna Mills on the Desperately Seeking Surnames blog.  An interesting challenge for Jenna.

*  Historical County Boundary Lines by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.  Linda has an interesting case illustrating this.

*  5 Steps to Finding and Interpreting Clues in a Family Photograph by Ava Cohn on the Avotaynu Online blog.  This is a fascinating story of using historical records and family lore to identify people in a photograph.

*  Historical Newspaper Research - Lesson 3 - Browse and Lesson 4 - Search Index and OCR by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  Ken explains why you should browse to pick up articles that OCR didn't find or messed up, and also searching the OCR matches.

*  A Dozen Ancestors That Aren't -- AKA - Bad NADs by Roberta J. Estes on the DNAeXplained - Genetic Genealogy blog.  This would be funny if it weren't sad.

*  Where Do You Stash Your Genealogy Stuff? by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  For me, everywhere there's a nook and cranny in my genealogy cave and online.

*  Protect An Overlooked Genealogy Treasure by Marian Pierre-Louis on the Legacy News blog.  Excellent points here.

*  Who Do You Think You Are? -- What it Teaches Us About Story by Lynn Palermo on The Family History Writing Studio blog.  Lynn describes how WDYTYA? puts together their stories, and how we can do the same.

*  Read the Problem; Trust but Verify by Alicia Crane Williams on the Vita Brevis blog.  The "verify" but is the key.

*  A Record Here... A Record There ... Wow! A Match! by Elizabeth Shown Mills on the Evidence Explained QuickTips blog.  Why we can't do it all online.

*  Are You Getting Off Track? Losing Your Focus? by Diane Gould Hall on the Michigan Family Trails blog.  Diane has a long list of tasks only partially done.  I do too.  Who doesn't?

*  Catch Up on all of the NERGC Blog Posts! by Heather Wilkinson Rojo on the Nutfield Genealogy blog.  Heather captures them all.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1560 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
