This census record has the complete set of children by Frederick's first wife, Matilda --?--.  Son Herman was born in New York, and the other five were born in California, marking the period 181-1856 for their migration across the country (or perhaps by sea from New York to San Francisco).

Frederick Schaffner (1829-1899) is my wife's second great-grandfather, with his first wife Matilda --?-- (about 1834-before 1880), through their eldest son Herman Schaffner (1851-1921), who married Mary Ann Paul (1854-1908) in about 1876.
