Seavers in the News - Joseph Alfred Seaver Dies in Brooklyn in 1911

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Brooklyn [N.Y.] Daily Eagle newspaper dated 21 June 1911:

The transcription of the article is:

"Joseph Afred Seaver.

"After a lingering illness, J. Alfred Seaver died Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. Paul Staunton, 120 Park street, E. Orange, N.J.  in his seventy-seventh year. Mr. Seaver  was born in Manhattan in the neighborhood of St. John's Park, when downtown was still a residential part.  In the early fifties he went West and engaged in business in Iowa, returning East at the beginning of the Civil War, and took up his residence at Roseville, N.J., afterward removing to Brooklyn in 1880.  He was a member of the Consolidated Stock Exchange, and of the firm of Ellis & Seaver, stockbrokers.  In the later years of his life he was Superintendent of the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Southampton, Long Island.  Mr. Seaver was twice married, his first wife, Mary E. Haulenbeek, who died in 1879.  At Brooklyn, in 1881, he was married to Mrs. S.B. McCord.  He is survived by the widow, and five children of the first marriage, Mrs. W.J. Durfey, Montclair, N.J.; Dr. Alfred D. Seaver of Brooklyn, Mrs. Irving Clark, Summit, N.J.; Spencer R. Seaver, Wyoming, N.J.; Mrs. E. Paul Staunton, East Orange, N.J.  Two step-daughters, Mrs. George H. Redfield, Sewickley, Pa.; Mrs. J.M. Dewar, East Orange, N.J.  Private funeral services were held Sunday afternoon.  Interment was in Rosedale Cemetery, Orange."

The source citation for the article is:

"Joseph Alfred Seaver," The Brooklyn [N.Y.] Daily Eagle newspaper, obituary, Wednesday, 21 June 1911, page 3, column 6, Joseph Alfred Seaver obituary;   Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 18 July 2019).

The obituary provides information about Joseph Alfred Seaver, including the names of his two spouses at marriage, and the names of his five living children, plus his two step-daughters.  However, it does not explicitly define his birth date or death date, although the latter can be deduced to be 16 June 1911 by the "last Friday" in the newspaper of Wednesday, 21 June.

Joseph Alfred Seaver was born 5 July 1834 in New York City, the third child and third son of William Whitney and Hannah Hewes (Hunneman) Seaver of New York City.  He married (1) Mary Jane Haulenbeek (1840-1879), and they had seven children:

*  Blanche Seaver (1861-1878).
*  Bessie C. Seaver (1864-1933), married William Joseph Durfey (1858-1928) in 1883, 1 child.
*  Alfred Drew Seaver (1866-1934), married Anne Bishop Lambertson (1866-1945) in 1891, 3 children.
*  William Herbert Seaver (1871-1872).
*  Mary B. Seaver (1873-????), married Irving Grinnell Clark (1866-1938) in 1898.
*  Spencer Raynor Seaver (1874-1942), married Kathleen Annie Aileen Holmes (1884-1936) in 1906, 5 children.
*  Helen Seaver (1877-????), married Edward Paul Staunton (1877-????) in 1898, 2 children.

Joseph Alfred Seaver married (2) Statira Blanchard (Critchlow) McCord (1841-1919) in 1881, no children.

Joseph Alfred Seaver (1834-1911) is my 6th cousin four times removed.
