Seavers in the News -- Obituary of Ernest D. Seaver (1900-1961) in Springfield, Massachusetts

Here is this week's edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Springfield [Mass.] Union newspaper dated Thursday, 2 February 1961, page 2, Columns 2-3:

The transcription of the article is:

"Ernest D. Seaver

"The body of Ernest D. Seaver, 60, of 8 Ashbrook Rd. was discovered on the second floor of his home by his wife, Mrs. Elsie Seaver.

"He had hanged himself with an electrical appliance cord.

"Associate Medical Examiner Dr. William A. Mosig viewed the body and made a finding that death resulted from self-inflicted strangulation.

"He was born in this city on July 19,1900, and had been a lifelong resident.  He was employed as a captain of the guards at the Chapman Valve Mfg. Co., Indian Orchard, retiring in 1960, after 42 years with the company.  He was a member of Wachogue Community Church; the Roswell Lee Lodge of Masons; and was a past commander of the Mobile Police.  He was also a member of the Chapman Valve Square Club.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Elsie (Armstrong) Seaver, he leaves a son, Clifton H. of Daytona Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Florence MacInniss and Mrs. John Moriello, both of Medford, and Mrs. Philip Weitz of Cambridge; and two grandchildren.

"The funeral will be held at the Byron funeral home Friday morning at 11.  Rev. Howard Munson, pastor of Wachogue Community Church, will officiate.  Burial will be in Hillcrest Park Cemetery.  The Roswell Lee Lodge will conduct its services tonight at 7:30.  Visiting hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m."

Ernest Delos Seaver (1900-1961) was born 19 July 1900 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of Cassius Benedict and Imogene Estelle (Bennett) Seaver.  He died 31 January 1961 in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Ernest married Elsie May Armstrong (1896-1982) on 2 October 1919 in Springfield, Massachusetts.  They had one Child:

*  Clifton Horace Seaver )1921-2001), married 1941 Evelyn Doreen Baker (1920-2007).

I am probably a cousin Ernest Delos Seaver, but I don't know the connection of his second great-grandfather John Seaver (1778-1841) to my Seaver family.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this is one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a very sad ending.  I am glad that I can honor Ernest Delos Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
