This is the same land parcel that Ranslow Smith purchased from the William Lewis Estate in 1867, transcribed in Amanuensis Monday - Post 227: 1867 Deed of Land in Taylor County, Iowa from William Lewis Estate to R. Smith (posted 21 July 2014) for $220.
He sold the land in the current transaction less than 16 months later for $640, a $420 profit. Of course, he may have improved the plot by clearing woods or forest, or by building a house or outbuildings, or by planting crops on it. Without more information, we don't know if he made a profit.
Ranslow Smith (1805-1873) is the adoptive father of my second great-grandfather, Devier J. Lamphier Smith (1839-1894). He married Julia (Middleton) Johnston, as his second wife, on 8 March 1868 in Taylor County, Iowa.
