4) NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets) - revised July 2025:
Sophia Buck was born 3 May 1797 in Holden, Worcester County, Massachusetts, the 4th daughter and sixth child (of nine children) of Isaac Buck (a Revolutionary War soldier, 1757-1846) and Martha (Phillips) Buck (1757-after 1830). Her siblings were: Silas Buck (1784-1863), Martha Buck (1787-1872), Pliny Buck (1790-1874), Sally Buck (1794-????), Dennis Buck (1802-1873), Isaac Buck (1808-1871, and Leander Howe Buck (1810-????).
Sophia Buck's birth date of 3 May 1797 was calculated from her death record, which indicates, with a death date of 6 January 1882 [1]:
"Sophia (Buck) Stone, widow, age 84y 7m 3d, resident of Westborough MA, died of heart disease, born in Holden MA, parents Isaac and Martha (Phillips), father born in Southboro MA, no birth listing for mother."
This date is fairly consistent with ages in other records - age 53 in the 1850 U.S. census, age 64 in the 1860 U.S. census, and age 84 in the 1880 U.S. census. Her age was given as 63 in 1862 on the occasion of her third marriage.
Sophia Buck was married three times. Her first marriage was to Lambert Brigham on 12 February 1817 in Sterling, Worcester County, Massachusetts, the son of Phinehas and Lydia (Batherick) Brigham. The marriage intention entry in the Sterling town record book said[3]:
"Between Mr. Lambert Brigham & Miss Sophia Buck both of Sterling Dec. 16 1816"
The marriage record in the Sterling town records book says[2]:
"Feb. 12th Joined Lambert Brigm and Sophia Buck both of Sterling in marriage, John Robbins Justice of the Peace"
The entry in the Columbian Centinal newspaper (Boston, Massachusetts), for 22 February 1817, said[4]:
"Sophia Buck m. Lambert Brigham, formerly of Westborough, in Sterling."
Lambert and Sophia (Buck) Brigham had three children:
- Augustus Brigham (1820-1909), born in Sterling, Worcester County, Massachusetts, married in 1841 to Mary Ann Allard (1822-1909) and had ten children.
- Aurelius Brigham (1830-1878), born in Sterling, Worcester County, Massachusetts, married in 1853 to Olive Merriam Wilson (1834-1873) and had five children.
- Sophia Newton (1834-1923), born after Lambert's death, probably in Springfield, Windham County, Vermont, married in 1852 to Edward Hildreth (1831-1899) and had two children.
Lambert Brigham died on 5 May 1834 in Westborough at age 39. Their daughter, Sophia Newton (always called Newton and not Brigham in records) was born 14 September 1834 in Springfield, Windham County, Vermont, four months after Lambert Brigham died.
Sophia (Buck) Brigham’s second marriage was to Thomas J. Newton (about 1790-????), perhaps in Springfield, Windham County, Vermont, probably by 1835. No marriage records for Thomas J. Newton and Sophia (Buck) Brigham were found. They had one child:
- Thomas Jefferson Newton (born 3 June 1836 in Cambridge, Lamoille County, Vermont, married Amanda Bastin in 1864, and died in 1915 in Albany, Orleans County, Vermont).
My hypothesis is that Thomas J. Newton married Sophia (Buck) Brigham in late 1834 or in 1835 in Springfield, Windham County, Vermont, and had son Thomas Jefferson Newton in Cambridge, Lamoille County, Vermont. There is no death record for Thomas J. Newton or for a divorce of Thomas J. Newton and Sophia (Buck) (Brigham) Newton. It is possible that Thomas J. Newton died before 1850. Sophia (Buck) (Brigham) Newton certainly returned to Worcester County, Massachusetts before 1850. It is likely that one of her Buck siblings or one of Lambert Brighm's siblings took her two sons Augustus and Aurelius when Sophia left for Vermont with Thomas J. Newton after Lambert Brigham’s death.
In the 1850 U.S. census, Sophia Newton (age 53, born Massachusetts) resided with her daughter Sophia Newton (age 15, born Vermont) in Northborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts.[5]
In the 1860 U.S. census, Sophia Newton (age 64, born Massachusetts, a seamstress) resided in Northborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts in the home of Moses Green, a farmer.[6] She probably resided in Northborough because her married daughter, Sophia (Newton) Hildreth lived there with her husband and their young daughter.
Sophia Newton married Jonathan Stone (1795-868) on 17 July 1862 in Westborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts.[8] The information in the vital record register book includes:
- Jonathan Stone - resident of Westboro, age 66, a stonecutter, born in Shrewsbury to Daniel and Anna Gibson, third marriage
- Sophia Newton - resident of Westboro, age 63, no occupation, born in Holden, daughter of Isaac and Martha Buck, third marriage.
Jonathan Stone died in Westborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts on 1 August 1868. They had no children.
In the 1880 US census, the Edward and Sophia (Newton) Hildreth family lived in Leominster in Worcester County, Massachusetts.[7] The family included
- Edward Hildreth -- white, male, age 49, married, machinist, born MA, father and mother born MA
- Sophia Hildreth -- white, female, age 46, wife, married, keeping house, born VT, father born ME, mother born MA
- Sophia Stone -- white, female, age 84, mother-in-law, widowed, born MA, father and mother born MA
Sophia (Buck) (Brigham) (Newton) Stone died 6 January 1882 in Westborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts.[1] The extracted data from the death record includes:
"Sophia (Buck) Stone, widow, age 84y 7m 3d, resident of Westborough Mass, died of heart disease, born in Holden MA, parents Isaac and Martha (Phillips), father born in Southboro MA, no birth listing for mother."
The burial location of Sophia (Buck) (Brigham) (Newton) Stone is not known.
