This week's document for Amanuensis Monday is a 1787 deed of John Palmer, Josiah Kendall and Simon Gates quitclaiming land in Princeton to Nathan Miles of Westminster, Massachusetts in the Worcester County, Massachusetts Land Records:

Whereas Nathan Miles of Westminster in the County of Worcester
and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Yeoman for and in consideration
of forty seven pounds ten shillings and five pence well & truly paid
by John Palmer yeoman & Josiah Kendall Gentleman both of Sterling
in the County of Worcester & Commonwealth of Massachusetts & Simon
Gates of Garner yeoman in the above said County and Commonwealth
did give and make to the above said John Josiah and Simon a good Warran-
tee Deed of twenty two Acres of land lying in the North East Corner of Prince-
ton in the County of Worcester & Commonwealth of Massachusetts
and bounded as follows viz begining at a stake and stones being the
Southwest Corner of Jonathan Smiths pasture then runing East by
said smith's land twenty eight rods to a stake & stones thence East six-
teen degrees South one rod to a heap of stones thence cornering & runing
Southeasterly to the South line of said land to land of John Marble such
a point as will contain twenty two Acres from thence West thirty four
degrees North to a heap of stones by land of John Marble to the Corner of
William Dods land from thence by land of William Dods to the first
mentioned Corner said Dods bearing Date the thirteenth Day of May
one thousand seven hundred and eighty five.
Know All Men by these Presents that We John Palmer and Josiah
Kendall and Simon Gates above mentioned for and in consideration of the
sum of forty seven pounds ten shillings & five pence well and truly paid
by the above said Nathan Miles with which We are fully satisfied & contented
have and do by these Presents for ourselves our Heirs Executors & Admini-
strators quit our claim unto the said Nathan Miles his heirs and assigns
in that our right title interest claim or demand which We have or may
or ought to have in or to said land in consequence of said Deed forever
so that neither We the said John Palmer Josiah Kendall Simon Gates our
Heirs Executors or Administrators shall have any right or title or claim
thereto or any part thereof but We for ourselves our Heirs & Executors
Administrators shall be forever excluded and debarred. In witness
whereof We have set our hands and seals this thirtieth day of April

This quitclaim deed is for a tract of 22 acres of land in Princeton, Massachusetts. On 13 May 1785, Nathan Miles sold this same property to Palmer, Kendall and Gates for the same amount of money. In this deed, the three men quitclaim the deed to Nathan Miles. Why? Perhaps Nathan Miles needed money or credit in 1785 and the three men provided it? We will probably never know.
Simon Gates (1739-1803), son of Amos and Mary (Hubbard) Gates, who married Susanna Reed (1745-1833) in 1766, is my 5th great-grandfather. I am descended from their son, Nathan Gates (1767-1830) who married Abigail Knowlton (1774-1855) in 1790.
