Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- What New Genealogy-Related Skill Have You Developed?

1)  Learning about how to pursue genealogy and family history is a lifetime task.  Once you've mastered one record type (census, church, certificates, probate, directories, immigration, etc), or one skill (family tree software program, record transcription, source citations, DNA matches, AI prompting, etc.), a new record, or skill, presents itself.  With the constant advances in technology and knowledge, doing genealogy and family history well requires constant learning to do something new. 

2)  This week's challenge is to tell us a new genealogy-related skill that you have, or are working on, developing.  Tell us about your progress.  Are you having fun?

3)  Share your latest genealogy-related skill and results in your own blog post or in a Facebook, SubStack, BlueSky or other social media post.  Leave a link to your post on this blog post to help us find your post.

Here's mine:

Last year's new skills were using FamilySearch Full-Text Search to help my ongoing research and also using Artificial Intelligence tools to help me with my genealogy research and family history story-telling. 

In the last two months, I've made an effort to learn how to make family history videos and put them on my long-ignored YouTube channel.  The challenge is creating the content, and not the actual task of putting it on YouTube.  

I have all of these stories about my own life, along with notes and reports about the lives of my ancestors, and now I have AI-assisted biographies, poems, songs, podcasts and stories about the lives of some of my ancestors.  

How can I put them in an audio and/or video format that my brothers, children, cousins and grandchildren might be interested in?  Can I create them using my own voice so that they can learn, and recall, the stories of their ancestors?    

I tried making a Zoom video discussing the life of Isaac Seaver (1823-1901) along with reading a poem and playing the song about his life.  That was just OK in my humble opinion - my public speaking limitations (hesitations, mutterings, etc.) without a script are painfully obvious, and the song music disappeared - you can watch the result in my video Isaac Seaver 1823 - 1901 Biography.  My judgment was that I wasn't ready for YouTube primetime.  

Using the artificial intelligence tool Google NotebookLM, I know that I can create an Audio Overview (like a podcast) of one of my blog posts (say a genealogical sketch, or a story of my own life), and just recently NotebookLM created a Video Overview feature.  I love these features because they tell "my story" in a concise and interesting way.  How can I turn them into a video on my YouTube channel?

Following Marcia Philbrick's suggestions, I started making videos of the AI-assisted songs (about 4 minutes) and podcasts (usually 10 to 20 minutes) using the Canva.com free tools.  Each video uses a short biographical summary slide of the selected ancestor as the image (created on Canva) and attaches the AI-assisted song (from Suno.com) or the AI-assisted podcast (from NotebookLM) to the slide.  I save the videos and can upload them to YouTube with an appropriate title and descriptive text.  Here is one of the Canva-created song videos in Rebecca Hill Rich 1788 1862 AI-assisted Song on my YouTube channel:

On the songs, the music comes through on YouTube and the audio is better!

Is all of that "good enough?"  I don't think so, and I will continue looking for something better that can use my own voice (e.g., perhaps an avatar voice that sounds like me and can read text that I've written - don't laugh, it can be done, I did it with EmulateMe 20 months ago.  I want to tie the biography, poem, song, podcast and stories of a family together.  The avatar reading feature exists, but there is a recurring fee to use it.  Suggestions are welcome!!

What's next?  Well, I still want to write eBooks to document my research, perhaps using the AI-assisted biographies, poems, songs, podcasts and stories for one ancestor, or for a string of ancestors (say, my Seaver line from Robert Seaver in 1608 to Randall Seaver in 1943). Maybe next year!  Again, suggestions are welcome!!

Am I having genealogy fun?  YES.  And I'm learning much more about my ancestors and social history in this process as I take a deeper dive into the lives of my ancestors.

Dear Randy - "Where Are You Going With the Artificial Intelligence Work?"

 A reader emailed me with that question - "Where are you going with the Artificial Intelligence work you are pursuing on your Genea-Musings blog?"

1)  My longish response was: 

"I've worked 38 years on researching the lives of my ancestral families, with dates, places, relationships, events, records, sources and notes and all I have is a really big family tree with over 74,000 profiles in RootsMagic software and in online trees at Ancestry and MyHeritage.  

"The original lifetime plan was to write a series of books about my ancestry (perhaps one for each great-grandparent) and descendants of key ancestors (perhaps selected immigrants to America and their descendants).  That turned into a really big task.  

"In recent years, I've been told by my brothers, children, cousins, grandchildren, etc. that they don't really want to read 500-page books - they will just sit on the shelf unread until someone throws them out.  They want audio and video to hear and watch interesting stories and scenes.  Do they want those about boring (hah!) ancestors who lived three generations ago (and what about ten generations ago?)?  I hope so!

"I don't have many photos or stories of my ancestors before my great-grandparents, except in rare cases.  I do have records of ancestors back through ten generations or more and they can tell a story when presented in chronological order. Those records have been used to create genealogical sketches of many of my ancestors on my blog, and are collected in the 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies web page. 

"I started exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to perform genealogical functions  two years ago, testing it for summarizing records, transcribing records, translating text, describing and analyzing a  photograph, answering questions about genealogy processes, creating poems and songs for fun, and more.  

"Now I'm exploring using Artificial Intelligence tools to turn my dry, fact-filled but boring 'just the facts' ancestor genealogical sketches into engaging, inspiring, and informative AI-assisted biographies, stories, poems, songs, podcasts and videos about my ancestors that include social history, geography, and national events. 

"My experience to date is that if I tell the AI tools to only use information in the genealogical sketches that the AI tools do not make up erroneous information.  I review the material provided by the AI tool and edit it if necessary to stay true to the historical record. I prefer Anthropic Claude for the biographies because it seems to be the best 'writer' and I want consistent format and content across the biographies and stories.

"The overarching goal is to create stories about the ancestors of my relatives, including myself, that will appeal to my relatives but are based on historical facts and experiences that will help them understand the lives and times of their forebears.  

"I think that every historical person is unique and has a unique story with events, and the life of that person should be described and celebrated, especially my ancestors. Of course, other researchers can do their own ancestors - mine are interesting enough!

"I was an aerospace engineer in my earlier years and can write complete, sourced and boring genealogical sketches with 'just the facts' about a historical person.  I 'wonder' a lot about life in other times, but I'm not creative, or experienced, enough to write historical fiction.  So using Artificial Intelligence to 'help me' write interesting and engaging stories is just like hiring a creative writer to do the same task, but a lot cheaper.  

"My genealogical research has shifted a bit - from pursuing more records of the persons in my family tree every day, and writing about them on my Genea-Musings blog, to exploring ways to tell the stories of my ancestors, and telling the stories on my Genea-Musings blog, and doing Visual Storytelling on my YouTube channel, so that my relatives can enjoy them after I'm gone. I'm still doing genealogy research 'work' but now I'm doing more family history and stories 'work.'"

2)  What have I accomplished in the past year?

• Updated and added more details to some of the genealogical sketches that I developed based on my genealogy research and posted on my blog since 2014 - over 500 of them (see 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies).  

• Asked many questions about genealogy and family history processes, historical events, occupation details, etc. that draw on the event history and social history of the times and places my ancestors lived. I wrote blog posts for many of these questions.

• Created an ABC (Ancestor Biography Creation) process to use the genealogical sketch of an ancestor to write a biography, create a poem and a song, create an audio overview, and create family stories (historical fiction since I don't know what really happened every day in a life) to help describe and celebrate the life of the ancestor. The AI tools are much better than I am in summarizing genealogical sketches and writing engaging narrative.  

I now have about 36 ABC Biographies that also link to the genealogical sketch, the poem, song and podcast for the selected ancestor.  I write two ABC Biographies each week, and plan to complete them through my third great-grandparents (so 62 biographies).

• Created AI-assisted poems, songs on Suno.com, and podcasts on NotebookLM from the genealogical sketches about my close ancestors and have completed about 50 of the close ancestors.  I write one blog post each week to publish the poem, song and podcast.

• Created historical fiction family stories  about "Day in the Life," "Life Memoirs," "Ten Questions and Answers," "Reminiscences," "Dialogues," etc. that describe how life was for my ancestors in the times and places they resided.  I am aiming for at least two family history stories for each ancestor and two stories per week on the blog.

• Created YouTube videos (using Canva.com) to add the AI-assisted podcasts and songs, and I am uploading those plus the NotebookLM video overviews to my YouTube channel. 

• All of my Artificial Intelligence posts can be found on my Randy's AI and Genealogy web page in categories.

3)  What's coming in the next year?  I want to complete the biographies, text stories, and visual stories through my third great-grandparents (including my own stories), then work on selected lines (definitely Seaver, Carringer, and Richman/Richmond ancestral families).  I want to write eBooks for some of the selected lines and some family story series.  The work can be neverending! 

I have plenty of "free" time to pursue this passion and cost is not an issue - I'm using only FREE AI tools to date.  

Lastly, I'm having great genealogy fun doing this!

ABC Biography of #44 Jonathan White (1804-1850) of Rhode Island and Connecticut

 The Anthropic Claude (now Sonnet 4) artificial intelligence tool can be used to write family-friendly biographies of my ancestors that might interest and engage my relatives and descendants to help them learn about and understand their ancestry. Using the ABC method described in Using Artificial Intelligence In the Ancestor Biography Creation (ABC) Process, here is one ancestor biography.

1) I wrote genealogical sketches for almost every known ancestor back through 9 generations in blog posts based on 38 years of genealogical research in my 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies series. The genealogical sketch for my 3rd great-grandfather, Jonathan White (1804-1850), #44 on my Ahnentafel List), including family members, record abstracts and sources, is 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 37: #44 Jonathan White (1804-1850).

2) For the Claude AI biography, I attached the PDF of the genealogical sketch for the specific ancestor using the plus (+) icon, and then prompted the AI tool with: "You are an expert genealogist. Please create a biography based on information in the attached file, including parents, siblings, spouses and children (with birth and death dates and places), summarize life events, and add historical facts as appropriate, but do not add or embellish any extra genealogical details. Use section headings. Expand the information in each section to add more details. The tone should be engaging and suitable for family members."

Early Hardship and Resilience

Tragedy struck the White family when Jonathan was just nine years old. His father Humphrey died on January 15, 1814, leaving behind his widow Sibel with seven children aged 18 and younger. This loss thrust the family into difficult circumstances during a time when a father's death often meant economic hardship for the entire household.

Sibel White showed remarkable strength and determination in the face of adversity. • Albert Henry White was born on April 1, 1827, also in Glocester. He would marry Olive Almira Griffith on November 29, 1866, in Providence, Rhode Island. Albert lived a long life, passing away on February 11, 1910, in Putnam, Connecticut, at the age of 82.
• Harriet A. White was born around 1836 in Glocester, the youngest child and only daughter. She was still living with her parents in 1850, but after that time, the historical record becomes silent about her fate, leaving her story as one of the many mysteries that genealogists encounter in family research.

Establishing Roots Through Land Ownership

Jonathan understood the importance of land ownership in securing his family's future. In 1821, he made his first significant land purchase in Glocester, Rhode Island, buying property from his sister Elizabeth and her husband Peleg Wood. This transaction was witnessed by his sister Nancy, demonstrating how family members supported each other in important business dealings.

His land acquisitions continued as he purchased additional property in Glocester on April 3, 1824, from his brother Benjamin. Later that same year, on October 15, 1824, Jonathan and Benjamin together bought land from their sister Rhoda and her husband Erastus Clark. Life in Glocester During the 1830s

Final Years and Family Responsibilities

Jonathan's mother, Sibel, lived until early 1848, dying in Glocester before March 11th of that year. Jonathan's will reveals both his love for his family and his practical approach to securing their future. He appointed Deacon Samson B. Covill of Killingly as his executor, choosing a respected community member to oversee his estate.

In his will, Jonathan made careful provisions for each family member:

• He gave Miranda the use of all his Connecticut lands during her lifetime, along with household furniture to manage as she saw fit
• He bequeathed his Rhode Island lands to his sons Henry and Albert to share equally
• After Miranda's death, the Connecticut lands would also go to his sons, provided they pay their sister Harriet $200 within one year
• He required Miranda to provide room and board for Harriet until she married, including her clothing if she remained at home
• His sons were responsible for paying all debts and funeral expenses

The inventory of Jonathan's estate totaled $1,227.55, including real estate valued at $900, showing that he had indeed built a successful farming operation in Connecticut.

A Brief Widowhood

Miranda White's life was also cut tragically short. She died on August 27, 1850, in Killingly of pleurisy -- just four months and eight days after Jonathan's death. This left their children orphaned, with young Harriet (around 14 years old) likely going to live with one of her older brothers.

Final Rest

Jonathan and Miranda White were laid to rest together in the "White-Chace Lot" in Glocester, Providence County, Rhode Island, returning in death to the place where Jonathan had been born and spent his early years. His story represents that of countless American farming families who built the foundation of the nation through hard work, family cooperation, and careful stewardship of the land. The White family's emphasis on education, land ownership, and mutual support exemplifies the values that helped shape American society during the first half of the 19th century.

Jonathan's legacy lived on through his sons Henry and Albert, who continued to build on the foundation their parents had established, and through the family connections that bound the White, Wade, and related families together across the generations.

6) I edited the Claude biography text to add more family detail and correct minor errors. Every large language model (LLM) AI tool writes descriptive text much better than I can write. I was an aerospace engineer in my former life, and my research reports and genealogical sketches reflect "just the facts gleaned from my research." The AI tools are very perceptive, insightful and create readable text in seconds, including local and national historical events and social history detail when requested.

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

Marshall notes that there are:

• 0 removed entries
• 72  added entries 
• 109updated entries
• 14 entries with more or fewer images 
• 88 entries with more or fewer records

The FamilySearch website says there are 3,410 total entries on the list (without signing in). Marshall's list says there are 3,483 (without signing in).  They are definitely NOT in-sync this week.

There are now 3,893 searchable image collections on FamilySearch Full-Text Search this week, a decrease of 26 from last week. It is not possible to see which collections are new.

There are now 26,738 801 browsable image collections on FamilySearch Images this week, a decrease of 63 from last week. It is not possible to see which collections are new.
