It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.
The transcription of this article is:
"SINGLETON-CARRINGER
Albert William Singleton and Miss Leola Pearl Carringer were married at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Carringer, on 13th street. Rev. S.V. Carmany officiated and the ring ceremony was used. Following the ceremony, a wedding diner was served. The young couple will make their home in Franklin. Among the guests was Mrs. W.G. Kimes of Oil City."
The source citation is:
"Singleton-Carringer," The News-Herald [Franklin, Penn.] newspaper, marriage article, Thursday, 7 March 1918, page 5, column 3, Albert William Singleton and Leola Pearl Carringer marriage article; Newspapers.com (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 4 October 2021).
This marriage article provides the names of the bride and groom, the bride's parents names, and one of the out of town attendees.
Albert William Singleton (1896-1971) was born 29 October 1896, the son of William Thomas and Flora (Ross) Singleton of Franklin, and died 9 January 1971 in Detroit, Michigan. Leola Pearl Carringer (1901-1982) was born 7 March 1901 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, daughter of William Earl and Fanny Lobertha (Latshaw) Carringer, and died 9 August 1982 in Pinellas County, Florida. They married 7 March 191 in Franklin, Pennsylvania. They had one child:
* Albert William Singleton (1919-1987), married 1945 Grace Anne Mohler (1915-2007).
According to other available records (a death record and a marriage record), "Leola's" given name was Leora Pearl Carringer. She married (2) Abel W. Haldeman (1902-1984) in 1928.
I am a 4th cousin once removed to Leora Pearl (Carringer) (Singleton) Haldeman. Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851).
There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them. Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a newspaper article contains the wrong spelling of a name. I am glad that I can honor Leora Pearl Carringer today.
You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
