John Marshman was born sometime before his baptism on 30 March 1747, the son of John and Jane (Crook) Marshman of Melksham, Wiltshire[1]. He was the fifth of nine children of the couple.
John's father, John Marshman (1713-1767) of Melksham died before 3 October 1761 intestate, and was an innkeeper. Jane Marshman, wife of innkeeper John, was appointed administratrix of the estate. No children were named in the probate record. Jane (Crook) Marshman died in 1785 in Hilperton without a probate record.
After his father died, John lived in Lacock, Hilperton, Devizes and Trowbridge. His occupation at the time of his marriage was weaver, and no further record provides an occupation.
John Maishman, weaver of Lacock, married, first, at age 19, on 2 February 1767 in Lacock, Wiltshire to Anne Angel, spinster of Lacock[2]. She was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Hiscock) Angel of Lacock. Both parties signed by mark. They had at least six children:
* Thomas Marshman (1767-????), born and baptized in Lacock, married 1796 Jane Hambs (1770-1854) in Devizes.
* Elizabeth Marshman (1777-????), born and baptized in Hilperton.
* Martha Marshman (1780-1858), born and baptized in Hilperton, married 1802 William Wiltshire (1761-1834) in Calne.
* James Marshman (1782-1854), born in Hilperton, married 1814 Phoebe Slatford (1782-1849) in Trowbridge.
* John Marshman (1783-????), born and baptized in Trowbridge.
* Ann Marshman (1784-1856), born in Devizes, married 1811 John Richman (1789-1867) in Hilperton.
There may be several other children born in Lacock or Hilperton but there are no baptism records.
Anne (Angel) Marshman died before 3 March 1795 in Hilperton, Wiltshire.
John Marshman married, secondly, at age 48 to Frances Fishlock (1750-????) on 15 September 1795 in Trowbridge[3]. Both parties signed by mark. No children were born or baptized in Wiltshire baptism records.
There are no relevant available death, burial or probate records for John Marshman in Trowbridge, Hilperton, Devizes or Melksham, Wiltshire.
NOTE: The placing of Ann Marshman (1784-1856) as a daughter of John and Anne (Angel) Marshman is supported by two DNA matches with common ancestors of John and Anne (Angel) Marshman through son James Marshman (13 cM) and Martha Marshman (10 cM), plus one DNA match with common ancestors of John and Jane (Crook) Marshman. This is the author's current thinking and is subject to change if new information is obtained.
