Seavers in the News -- 1981 Obituary of Marion Bickford Seaver (1891-1981) of Lyndonville, Vermont

Here is this week's edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Burlington (Vt.) Free Press newspaper dated Wednesday, 7 October 1981, Page 14, Column 3:

The transcription of the article is:

"MARION BICKFORD SEAVER

"LYNDONVILLE -- Marion Bickford Seaver, well-known throughout the state as teacher, musician, and prominent member of the Vermont Federation of Women's Clubs, died at the age of 90 on Sept. 23 at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury.

"Mrs. Seaver was the widow of Amory Seaver, former principal of Middlebury High School and faculty member of Lyndon Institute.  She graduated from Barton Academy and Montpelier Seminary and received her diploma from the New England Conservatory of Music.  She did graduate work in music at Harvard College, Columbia University and the Julliard School of Music.

"Her tireless effort to bring the highest musical standards to her pupils, church and community and her encouragement of young people made her well-known throughout the state,  In addition to being chairperson of the Community Concerts Association locally, she energetically supported the regional hospital building program and did volunteer charitable work.  Mrs. Seaver's many friends will remember her for her gracious, ready sympathy and for her avid interest in gardening.

"Mrs. Seaver is survived by a daughter, Mary Kiplinger of Pittsburgh; a son, John of San Pedro, Calif.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren."

This obituary provides a summary of the life and family of Marion Bickford Seaver, with information about her age, place of death, education, employment, associations, and names and residences of her husband and children.

Marion Cheney Bickford (1891-1981) was born 1 June 1891 in Medford, Massachusetts, the daughter of Edwin Dana and Sophronia Louise (Cheney) Bickford.  She died 23 September 1981 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.  She married Amory Davison Seaver (1893-1972) on 28 June 1919 in Barton, Vermont.  They had two children:
  • John Davison Seaver (1920-2016), married 1943 Gloria Elinor Dyer (1923-1999).
  • Mary Louise Seaver (1923-2013), married John Wesley Kiplinger (1923-1995).
I am a 7th cousin 3x removed to Amory Davison Seaver (1893-1972) in the Seaver line. Our common Seaver ancestor is my 9th great-grandfather Robert Seaver (1608-1683).

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this is one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a great obituary with complete education, occupation and family information.  I am glad that I can honor Marion Bickford Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
