Tuesday's Tip - find Online Historical Newspapers

This week's Tuesday's Tip is to find newspaper articles about your ancestors in online record collections.

1)  Miriam Robbins Midkiff has an Online Historical Newspapers Website in progress at http://sites.google.com/site/onlinenewspapersite/.  Online newspapers are listed by country, then state, then county.  Free and subscription websites are listed and linked to.  Currently, there are listings for many US states, some Canadian provinces and some Australian states.  However, the listings do not include items on NewspaperARCHIVE and several other subscription sites.

2)  Joe Beine's Research Guides website has a page for Historical Newspapers and Indexes on the Internet for the USA at http://www.researchguides.net/newspapers.htm

3)  The University of Pennsylvania Library website has a listing of free online historical newspapers at http://gethelp.library.upenn.edu/guides/hist/onlinenewspapers.html

What other online historical newspaper index sites are there?

Periodika.lv is a historical newspaper site for Latvia. There are different newspapers available from the early 20th century, most are in Latvian, but some are in German or Russian. There is an English search interface available.

Hi, Randy,

Thanks for highlighting my Online Historical Newspapers Website. I do have a correction to make to your information: I DO have some links to subscription sites, including NewspaperARCHIVE, GenealogyBank, and Ancestry. However, I am currently focused on adding titles from the Library of Congress and Google News Archive because they are free.

GenealogyBank titles are very easy for me to add. NewspaperARCHIVE titles are not because they have duplicate and incomplete listings of titles. I started adding Ancestry's titles, but stopped because I heard from Megan Smolenyak that all of Ancestry's titles are from NewspaperARCHIVE and they change them intermittently. Until I figure out a better way of listing them, I am leaving links to the titles through Ancestry for later.

I hope this clarifies things for you and your readers! Happy Hunting!

I've made a LibGuide for Newspapers: Finding Current and Historical Newspapers at http://libguides.bgsu.edu/newspapers. This includes information about holdings at my library. The pages that would be useful to your readers are for Historical U.S. Newspapers on the Internet at http://libguides.bgsu.edu/content.php?pid=98702&sid=750815
and Historical Worldwide Newspapers on the Internet http://libguides.bgsu.edu/content.php?pid=98702&sid=740645
