Best of the Genea-Blogs - 12 to 18 August 2012

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.
My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for the genealogy carnivals, or other meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  My Very First Deed by Melody Lassalle on The Research Journal blog.  Mel's first deed was a good one - great job of sleuthing it out and finding it online at FamilySearch.

*  Searching for a Phantom Uncle in Depression-Era Records by Patricia Desmond Biallas on the GeneaJourneys blog.  Patricia wrote a beautiful story about her family's life struggles in the 1920s and 1930s combined with resource information about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

*  Roundup of Genealogy Webinar Providers by Marian Pierre-Louis on Marian's Roots and Rambles blog.  This is a very helpful list, thanks, Marian!

*  Echo King: Result Ranking Unveiled by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.  This article pertains to Ancestry.com search result ranking discussed at the recent BYU conference.

*  Eight Tips for Those Considering Certification by Harold Henderson on the Midwestern Microhistory  blog.  Harold has helpful ideas for those wanting a CG.

*  RIP John T. Humphrey, CG by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Thank you, Judy, for a beautiful tribute to a great genealogist.

*  How to Give Back to the Genealogy Community by Thomas MacEntee on the Flip-Pal Genealogy Blog.  Thomas offers ideas on giving back, including using the Flip-Pal.

*  Sources in FamilySearch Family Tree by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James is reviewing changes to FSFT, and reveals some things about My Source Box and a link to the FSFT User's Manual.

*  Places for Finding a Woman's Maiden Name: A Checklist of 90 Sources by Bill Dollarhide on Leland Meitzler's Genealogy Blog.  Bill has a great list of potential sources.

*  Technology Links for Today's Genealogist for 17 Aug 2012 by Caroline M. Pointer on the 4YourFamilyStory.com blog.  Caroline shows us her Apps for FGS on her iPhone - great list!

Several genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week, including:

*  Monday Morning Mentions by Lynn Palermo on The Armchair Genealogist blog.

*  Ruth's Recommendations by Ruth Blair on The Passionate Genealogist blog.

*  Follow Friday - Fab Finds for August 17, 2012 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

*  Follow Friday - Uencounter.me, Family Stories, and Motivation by Anne Gillespie Mitchell on the Finding Forgotten Stories blog.

*  From the Blogs, August 17 by Michael Leclerc on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog.

*  Friday Finds - 08/17/12 by Julie Cahill Tarr on the GenBlog blog.

I encourage readers to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Google Reader, RSS feed or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1280 genealogy bloggers using Google Reader, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

Thanks for the mention, Randy. John Humphrey's loss is a big one for our community, that's for sure.

Randy ~ Thanks so much for including me in your list of top ten blogs of the week. I'm pretty new to this (just started blogging last October) so it means a lot me to have someone like you acknowledge my efforts.
