Ancestry On the Record - Member Tree Profiles Add All Parent Relationships

I received an email from Ancestry today saying:

Parent Relationships now shown on each person!

Ancestry® On The Records Shorts are quick updates to select features we have implemented based on community feedback.

There are 8 types of relationships that can be set for parents when you Edit Relationships.  Those are Biological, Adopted, Step, Foster, Related, Guardian, Private and Unknowns.

- All parent relationships now display in the Family Column on each person.

- When available, click Additional Parent Relationships to view more.

I have one known adopted ancestor - Devier James Lamphier Smith (1839-1894), born in Jefferson county, new York, and died in Cheyenne County, Kansas.  He was adopted by Ranslow and Mary (Bell) Smith of Henderson, new York prior to their move to Dodge County, Wisconsin in about 1843.  I have an official name change record from 1866 in the Wisconsin State Senate that changes his name from Devier J. Lamphier to Devier J. Smith, and Ranslow Smith's 1873 will names him at Devier J. Lamphier alias Smith, his adopted son.

I went to the profile for Devier James Lamphier Smith in my Ancestry Member Tree, and clicked on the "Additional Parent Relationships" link (and the "Siblings" link too) and saw (two screens):

The Family Column (on the right side of the screen) lists the Adopted Parents first, then the Biological Parents, then the Siblings, then the Spouse and Children.

As you can see, I don't know the names of Devier's biological parents, nor do I know if the Lanfear parent is male or female, but I used a place holder for the bio-father so as to connect Devier to his Lanfear grandparents, Isaac and Rosina (Laun) Lanfear of Lorraine, Jefferson county, New York.  Doing this, I have several AncestryDNA ThruLines from Isaac and Rosina (Laun) Lanfear.

I checked the ThruLines list, and the list shows the Biological Parents in this case.  Hopefully, when there are both Biological and Adoptive (or the other options) Parents, the DNA screen will consistently show the Biological Parents.

My present Family Tree screen shows the Adoptive Parents for Devier James Lamphier Smith and not the Biological Parents for some reason.  I think the default should be the Biological Parents or there should be a "switch" to permit either to be shown at the user's discretion.  There is a "switch" on the "Edit Relationships" screen to choose which parents to be "Set as Preferred."

This is a nice-to-have addition to the Ancestry Member Tree screens.  However, I think it should be "automatic" - show them all on the Family Column if they have been input by the tree owner.

Disclosure:  I have had a paid subscription to since 2000, and use the site every day.  I have received material considerations from in years past, including the autosomal DNA test, but that does not affect my objectivity in writing about their products and services.

Since Family Tree Maker doesn't have exactly the same choices, what happens to your FTM record after a sync if you use one of these new choices in your Ancestry tree?

That is so cool! Thanks for sharing :) Love these little tweaks that Ancestry has been adding lately.
