Seavers in the News -- Nellie V. Seaver Dies in 1915 in Ellsworth, Kansas

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Ellsworth [KS] Messenger newspaper dated 14 January 1915:

The transcription of the article is:

"AT REST"

Entered into rest Saturday night, January 9, 1915, at Ellsworth, Kansas, Nellie V. Seaver, aged 59 years, 5 months and 17 days.  Mrs. Seaver was born at Nunda, New York, July 23, 1855.

"The Episcopal service was read at the home of the Rev. Michael Cady on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and interment was in the Ellsworth cemetery.

"Mrs. Seaver is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Charles Sutton, of Lawrence, Kas; two sons, William R. of Ellsworth, and Charles, of Chicago, Ill.; and one sister, Mrs. John Montgomery of Junction City, Kas.

"Mrs. Seaver was among the very early settlers of this county, coming with her parents as a young girl to Ellsworth, and has always made this city her home."

This obituary has a birth and death date for Nellie V. Seaver, the names of her three children and her sister, but not the name of her husband.

From my RootsMagic family tree, I see that Nellie Viola Henry was born 23 July 1855 in Nunda, New York, the daughter of Marcus W. and Mary Elizabeth (Dildene) Henry.  She married (1) about 1871 Chauncey Belden Whitney (1842-1873), and they had one child:

*  Mary Elizabeth Whitney (1872-1956), who married 1897 Charles Elliott Sutton (1869-1954).

Nellie (Henry) Whitney married (2) about 1877 Vincent B. Osborne (1839-1879), and they had one child:

*  Katie H. Osborne (1877-1877)

Nellie (Henry) (Whitney) Osborne married (3) Linus Homer Seaver (1849-1915) on 6 February 1881 in Saint Joseph, Missouri, and they had two children:

*  William Rufus Seaver (1881-1967), married 1915 Flora A. Copple (1889-1964), one daughter.
*  Charles Homer Seaver (1884-1951), married 1912 Grace Mary Marsh (1885-1955), four children.

I posted the obituary of Nellie's husband, Linus Homer Seaver, in Seavers in the News -- L.H. Seaver Dies in Ramona, California.

I am a 2nd cousin 4 times removed to Linus Homer Seaver and a 3rd cousin 3 times removed to his children.  Our common ancestors are my 5th great-grandparents, Norman and Sarah (Read) Seaver.

There are over 8,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes the life of a person has some sad parts - in this case the death of two husbands and one child.  I am glad I can honor Nellie Viola (Henry) (Whitney) (Osborne) Seaver today.
