Randy's Cousins -- 5th Cousin 4x Removed James Abram Garfield (1831-1881), the 20th President of the United States

This week's famous cousin is my 5th cousin 4x removed James Abram Garfield (1831-1881), the 20th President of the United States.

When President James Abram Garfield was born on 19 November 1831, in Orange Township, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States, his father, Abraham Garfield, was 31 and his mother, Elizabeth Ballou, was 30. He married Lucretia Rudolph on 11 November 1858, in Hiram, Portage, Ohio, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Washington, District of Columbia, United States in 1880 and Lake, Ohio, United States in 1890. He registered for military service in 1861. He died on 19 September 1881, in Elberon, Long Branch City, Monmouth, New Jersey, United States, at the age of 49, and was buried in Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States.

James Abram Garfield (November 19, 1831 – September 19, 1881) was the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 1881 until his assassination in September that year. A preacher, lawyer, and Civil War general, Garfield served nine terms in the United States House of Representatives and is the only sitting member of the House to be elected president. Before his candidacy for the presidency, he had been elected to the U.S. Senate by the Ohio General Assembly—a position he declined when he became president-elect.
