Table of Contents for New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume 170, Number 4 (Fall 2016)

I look forward to every issue of the peer-reviewed New England Historical and Genealogical Register journal, published quarterly by the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, Massachusetts.

The latest issue is Volume 170, Number 4 (Fall 2016).  The Table of Contents for this issue is:

page 275: Editorial

page 277: The Wife and Descendants of Revolutionary War Traitor Dr. Benjamin Church, Jr., of Boston, by Michael J. Leclerc

page 291: The Dispaw and Downing Families of Lynn, Massachusetts, by Marian Bowers Natale

page 299: William1  Sheffield of Braintree and Sherborn, Massachusetts, with Further Notes on the Daniel(s) Family of Medfield, by Austin W. Spencer and Beverly Spooner

page 319: Michael Powell of Dedham and Boston, Massachusetts: Two Letters to England and His English Origin, by Robert Charles Anderson

page 325: The Augur Family of London and West Ham, Essex: Ancestors of Nicholas1  Augur and Hester1 (Augur) Coster and Their Nephew Robert1  Augur of New Haven, Connecticut, by Clifford L. Stott

page 336: Two Winthrop Fleet Immigrants to New England: Thomas1 Beecher and Parnell (Gray) (Parker) Nowell, Wife of Increase1  Nowell, Both of Charlestown, Massachusetts, by Randy A. West

page 347: Additions and Corrections

page 350: Index of Subjects in Volume 170

page 352: Index of Persons in Volume 170

page 399: Annual Table of Contents of Volume 170

The most interesting article in this issue was the Michael Leclerc article about the family of Dr. Benjamin Church, the Revolutionary War traitor to the Rebel's cause.

The article that helps me the most in my own research is the Myrtle Hyde article about the Fiske family.

Book Notice: "A Genealogist's Guide to Boston, Massachusetts" Released

I received this notice via email this morning:

The fourth in a series of guides to popular research destinations

The In-Depth Genealogist is pleased to present their newest book in the research series by writer, Jacqueline Gamble entitled “A Genealogist’s Guide to Boston, Massachusetts”. The book is a great resource for genealogists who plan on researching in this geographic area. Approximately 12 million people from all over the world visit Boston every year to take in its beautiful harbor, amazing history, museums, sporting events, and more. With its mixture of old buildings (some dating back to the 1600s), new skyscrapers, and everything in between, Boston truly is a meeting of past, present and future.

This guide will provide you with what you will need to know when planning a genealogy trip to Boston. Within the book is information on repositories, libraries, historical societies, cemeteries, attractions, accommodations, and more in and around Boston.

"A Genealogist’s Guide to Boston, Massachusetts” is available now as a PDF, Kindle, and Nook download ($4.99) through The In-Depth Genealogist Store (http://theindepthgenealogist.com/shop-idg/idg-products/).  The paperback book will soon be available for just $9.99 in a convenient pocket sized, 5” x 8”, so it will easily fit in your bag or jacket.  Subscribers to the website receive a 10% discount on purchase of the book.

Jacky Gamble is a genealogist, historian and freelance writer. She discovered her passion for genealogy while crafting a list of cousins in her very large family. She sought the help of the internet for locating missing cousins and instead discovered records of her grandparents, great grandparents, 2nd great grandparents and so much more. The more ancestors she discovered, the more she wanted to know. And thus began her love of this hobby. She has yet to finish her original list of cousins.

When Jacky is not researching genealogy, she is writing about it. She regularly posts to her personal blogs at Tracing My New England Roots (http://genealogyvt.blogspot.com/) and The Graveyard Rabbit of Vermont (http://vermontgyrabbit.blogspot.com/). Her articles have been published in various Internet publications and in Family Chronicle magazine. Jacky is the author of The In-Depth Genealogist’s column “Remembering Olde New England” in Going In-Depth magazine.

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific collection, go to https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Best of the Genea-Blogs - Week of 27 November to 3 December 2016

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Check the Original Documents, Part 2 by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branch on the Family Tree blog.  Linda analyzes a Quaker document and doesn't find the sought-after marriage date.

*  My First YouTube Video by Louis Kessler on Louis Kessler's Behold Genealogy blog.  Louis describes how he made a video to submit to the Innovator Summit at RootsTech 2017, based on his Double Match Triangulator analysis of autosomal DNA matches.

*  That 1923 Date by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy explains why material published before 1 January 1923 is now out of copyright protection.

*  Useful Genealogy Resources for Memoirists by Laura Hedgecock on the Treasure Chest of Memories blog.  Laura describes social context issues and records that help define them.

*  Absolutely Everything There Is To Know ... by Jacqi Stevens on the A Family Tapestry blog.  Jacqi is stepping into the world of One Name Studies and describes her experiences to date.

*  Documenting your Ancestor's Transportation by Melissa Barker on the A Genealogist in the Archives blog.  Melissa shares some of her family stories.  Good idea.

*  Five Out of Ten Items Correct on Johann’s 1838 Baptismal Entry in Ancestry.com’s Transcription by Michael John Neill on the Rootdig.com blog.  Michael has an excellent example of why you should read the original record, if you can find it.

*  The Small Bonuses of Family Genealogy by theailurophile on the Leaf Twig and Stem blog.  Yes, there are.  Nice finds.

*  12 Christmas Gifts for a Genealogist by Lorine McGinnis Schulze on the Olive Tree Genealogy Blog.  Nice list, Lorine!

*  2016 Holiday Gift Guide for Genealogists by Julie Cahill Tarr on the Julie's Genealogy & History Hub blog.  Julie has a suggested list for holiday gift books.

*  Genealogy Gift Ideas by Lori Samuelson on the Genealogy at Heart blog.  Lori has an excellent wish list.

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

*  Friday Fossicking December 2, 2016 by Crissouli on the That Moment In Time blog.

*
GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 2 December 2016 by Jill Ball on the GeniAus blog.

*  Recommended Reads by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.

Friday Finds 2 Dec 2016 by Nichelle Barra on the Copper Leaf Genealogy blog.

*  Follow Friday ~ Fab Finds for December 2, 2016 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

*  Favorite Reads of the Week: 3 December 2016 by Nicole Dyer on the Family Locket blog.

This Week's Creme de la Creme -- December 3, 2016 by Gail Dever on the Genealogy a la Carte blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1600 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
