Best of the Genea-Blogs for 2012

There is no weekly Best of the Genea-Blogs this week due to my holiday travels.  There were some really good blog posts though - I recommend that you check out the weekly summaries by several geneabloggers that I have listed at the bottom of this post.

For the Year 2012, I posted 48 Best of the Genea-Blogs posts.  I missed the weeks of 1/1, 5/13, 5/20, and 12/30.  There were 141 different genealogy blogs featured in those posts, and a total of 453 blog posts.

While quantity is not necessarily the best metric, for something like a "Best Of" summary it's the only metric I have to determine which genea-bloggers were listed most often in my series.  Therefore, here are the top 20 listed in order of number of mentions (note that persons with multiple blogs are ranked by adding the blog totals):

 1) Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog (35 mentions)

2)  James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star   blog (21 mentions) and  FamilySearch Tech Tips blog (1 mention).

3)  Michael Hait on the Planting the Seeds: Genealogy as a Profession blog (15 mentions).

3)  The writer of The Ancestry Insider blog (15 mentions)
5)  CeCe Moore on Your Genetic Genealogist blog (12 mentions) and the Geni blog (2 mentions).

18)  Michael Leclerc on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog (6 mentions)

18)  Thomas MacEntee on the Geneabloggers blog (3 mentions), Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner Genealogy blog (2 mentions) and Destination:Austin Family (1 mention)

There are 21 listed there, and each of them is different and uniformly thought provoking, informative and well written.  Congratulations to these Top 21, and thank you for being such talented and dedicated genealogy bloggers

If someone asked me "what genealogy blogs do you recommend," these 21 would be on my list, along with quite a few others not on the list above.

Check out last year's post about the
Best of the Genea-Blogs - for the year 2011.  11 bloggers are repeaters on this year's list.

My thanks to all of the active genea-bloggers who fill my day with news, views and experiences in the world of genealogy.  I estimate that I read over 300 blog posts each and every day, and I try to highlight 10 to 20 posts each week.  The Best Of posts highlight about 0.1% of the candidates.  I have a bias for thoughtful, poignant and humorous posts... Obviously, I don't read every genealogy blog there is, but I do have over 1,300 on my reading list.  If you know of a really good genealogy  blog, please tell me about it - send me a link in a comment to this post and I'll add it to my Google Reader list.

For this past week, the following genea-bloggers took the time to compile their own Best Of list:

Follow Friday - Fab Finds for December 28, 2012 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

Please read their lists and click on their links.

For what it's worth - this is Post #274 in the Best of the Genea-Blogs series!  That's over five years of trying to review the world of genea-blogs (started 23 September 2007).

I really enjoyed reviewing my lists today - I cannot remember every post that I've listed, but it was fun refreshing my memory.

Check out previous year's post about the
Best of the Genea-Blogs - for the year 2011 and Best of the Genea-Blogs for 2012.  13 genea-bloggers are repeaters on this year's list from last year.

My thanks to all of the active genea-bloggers who fill my day with news, views and experiences in the world of genealogy.  I estimate that I read over 300 genealogy blog posts each and every day (that's over 100,000 genealogy blog posts a year!), and I try to highlight 10 to 15 posts each week.  The "Best Of" posts highlight about 0.05% of the candidates.  I have a bias for thoughtful, poignant and humorous posts... Obviously, I don't read every genealogy blog there is, but I do have over 1,400 on my reading list.  If you know of a really good genealogy  blog, please tell me about it - send me a link in a comment to this post and I'll add it to my Google Reader list.

For what it's worth - this is Post #326 in the Best of the Genea-Blogs series!  That's over six years of trying to curate the world of genea-blogs (started 23 September 2007).

Best of the Genea-Blogs - 15 to 21 September 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  DNA Disappointment by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy received her AncestryDNA update and was disappointed and confused by the results.

*  The Research Three-Step by Harold Henderson on the Midwestern Microhistory: A Genealogy Blog.  Harold offers a fairly simple research methodology.

*  Disappointed in DNA Test Results? and Why So Much Excitement Over Ethnicity Predictions? by Debbie Parker Wayne on the Deb's Delvings in Genealogy blog.  Debbie comments on the AncestryDNA changes - excellent pieces.

*  Researching a (Genealogy) Roadshow by Gena Philibert Ortega on the Gena's Genealogy blog.  Gena was a researcher for this PBS show debuting on 23 September.

*  My Updated Ethnicity Results from AncestryDNA - A British Perspective by Debbie Kennett on the Cruwys News blog.  Debbie found her updated AncestryDNA results to be confusing too.

*  14 Ways to Find Someone's Death Information by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  Ken has a great list.

*  The Problem of Borders by Philip Trauring on the Blood and Frogs: Jewish Genealogy and More... blog.  Philip highlights a video showing 1000 years of European borders.  Fascinating.

*  Your Family History Toolkit - Part 1, and Part 2 by Michael Leclerc on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog.  Here is excellent advice for building a toolkit.

*  1887 Suicide in the Barn and Why Didn't He Kill the Farmer? by Michael John Neill on the Rootdig.com blog.  Michael finds a newspaper article and analyzes the event and how he might find more information.

*  Will You Be Left Behind By FamilySearch Family Tree? by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James embraces the "one world tree" concept of the FSFT, warts and all.

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

*  XX Genealogy Things You Need to Know This Morning, 15 Sep 2013, 16 Sep 2013, 17 Sep 2013, 18 Sep 2013, 19 Sep 2013, 20 Sep 2013, and 21 Sep 2013 by Caroline J. Pointer on the 4YourFamilyStory.com blog.  This is a daily review from the genea-sphere.

*  Follow Friday - Favorites for September 20, 2013 by Heather Kuhn Roelker on the Leaves For Trees blog.

*  Genealogy Blogs, News & Tidbits, #8 by Deb Ruth on the Adventures in Genealogy blog.

*  Follow Friday ~ Fab Finds for September 20, 2013 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

*  Friday Finds - 09/20/13 by Julie Cahill Tarr on Julie's Genealogy & History Hub blog.

*  News for Genealogist, September 20, 2013 by Michael Leclerc on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1400 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

NOTE:  There will not be a Best of the Genea-Blogs post next week for blog posts of that week.  We are on our annual Christmas drive around California to see daughters, grandchildren and in-laws, and I will not have time or resources to do the job well.  I will, however, post something to sum up the year in Best of the Genea-Blogs Land!

Should "Best of the Genea-Blogs" Be a Weekly Flipboard Magazine?

My weekly Best of the Genea-Blogs blog post on Sundays has been a fixture for almost seven years (my, how time flies!), but it's always been essentially text with links to my selected blog posts from over 1,500 genealogy bloggers.  This is basic curation - find something, link to it, perhaps comment on it, let others read it.

I've been experimenting with different forms of presentation - especially Flipboard magazines, which is available on the Internet and on mobile devices.  I really like Flipboard as a visual curator - and I can select what I want to show in my magazines.

So today I decided to make a Flipboard magazine for last week's Best of the Genea-Blogs - the week of July 20-26, 2014.  The Flipboard magazine is at https://flipboard.com/section/best-of-the-genea-blogs---july-20-26%2C-2014-beLke3.

Here is the cover page:

Don't click on the image, it's not a live link!

Maybe I need a sexier image on the Best Of the Genea-Blog post?  I'll work on that!

Using the right and left arrows on the side of the Flipboard magazine pages, the reader can scroll through the pages in the magazine.  For instance, here is the second page of the magazine:

By clicking the + sign next to my name under the title of each image, the reader can go to the specific blog post.  That's good.  As you can see, there is an image associated with each webpage in the magazine.

But I have a problem with this concept.  I didn't write these blog posts, Wayne Shepheard and Thomas MacEntee did.  The URL given is to their blogs, but my name is under the title of the posts.  Granted, if the URL is short enough, the bloggers name might be next to it, which is good.  The image is not my image, either.  What do you think?  Are these copyright violations?  If so, whose violation is it - mine or Flipboard's?

Would you read a Flipboard magazine of the Best of the Genea-Blogs if I did this every week?  How about a Flipboard magazine for:

*  Each week's posts on Genea-Musings?

*  Research and photos for each ancestral family, or a special person?

*  For genealogical society activities?

It takes maybe 30 minutes to put one together with 20 to 25 links.  Is this something that would interest your genealogical society members?  Or your Facebook friends?  Or your family members? Or to pass via email to your genealogy buddies? Or not?

I would like your opinion on this - would you like this to happen?  Or do you not care?  Is this a way to reach younger genealogists, to document research activities, or to reach family members?

Best of the Genea-Blogs - 30 December 2012 to 5 January 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.
My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for the genealogy carnivals, or other meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Best of 2012 Genealogy Education Blog Posts by Angela Packer McGhie on the Adventures in Genealogy Education blog.  Angela highlights ten posts from 2012 that are on point.

*  Noteworthy Blogs for 2013 by the writer of the Digging in the Roots blog.  Here is a list of genealogy blogs to read in 2013 (Thanks for the kind words!).

*  Online United States Birth, Marriage and Death Records by Nathan Murphy on the FamilySearch Blog.  Here are links to all of the online vital records in the United States.  This is a must-have link!

*  2012 - A Very Good Year by Jill Ball on the Geniaus blog.  Jill captures the responses to her Accentuate the Positive 2012 Geneameme.

*  2012 in Review by Dick Eastman on Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter.  Dick summarizes the high points in genealogy history for 2012.

*  GeneAwards 2012 by Tamura Jones on the Modern Software Experience blog.  The Best of 2012 and Worst of 2012 are named by Tamura.

*  Tracing Back to Sally Hughes by Twila Barnes on the Thoughts from Polly's Granddaughter blog.  Twila shows her evidence trail through Cherokee and American records back to her Cherokee 6th great-grandmother.  I love research stories, and this one shows how Native ancestry can be traced, at least for certain tribes.

*  How do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? by GeneJ on the They Came Before blog.  What a fascinating puzzle.  An entry in German script analyzed one character at a time...

*  Ancestry.com Discloses 2013 Plans by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.  Mr. Insider has inside information and shares it with us.

*  Protecting Your Digital World - Part 1 by Denise Barrett Olson on the Moultrie Creek Gazette blog.  Denise has excellent advice for all of us.  Do this for yourself!

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

Best of the Genea-Blogs - Week of 2 to 8 June 2024

Scores of genealogy and family history bloggers write hundreds of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.
My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for most daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:
