Best of the Genea-Blogs - 8 to 14 January 2012

...
Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for the genealogy carnivals, or other meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

Genealogy: A Trivial Pursuit? by Greta Koehl on Greta's Genealogy Bog blog.  Greta highlights why genealogy is thought by many to be a trivial pursuit, and what we should do about it.

A Hobbyist's Genealogy Manifesto by Bart Brenner on the Stardust 'n' Roots blog.  Bart lists his genealogical principles and practices.  A great list!

Finding a Record Copy or a FamilySearch folly and Finding a Record Copy II or The Quick Brown Fox by Pat Richley-Erickson on the DearMYRTLE Genealogy Blog.  Myrt sorts out a poor FamilySearch reference of a Scottish marriage and finds an image of the original record for her correspondent.  She noted that the original record had much more information than the FamilySearch index database!

Courthouse Love - or Not  by Debbie Parker Wayne on the Deb's Delvings In Genealogy blog.  Deb makes the point that the records we find are wonderful, but the repositories may not be the greatest.

Does DNA Link 1991 Killing to Colonial-Era Family? by Blaine Bettinger on The Genetic Genealogist blog.  Blaine summarizes this week's DNA story in the mass media.

Citing Black’s Law Dictionary by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy confesses about how she survived ESM's Advanced Methodology and Evidence Analysis course at IGHR/Samford.

*  In Defense of the Field: The Study of Genealogy Does Matter by the writer of The Geneabrarian Reference Desk blog.  She analyzes what's been written about genealogy as a field or subject.

*  Rejected Genealogy Conference Proposals  by Amy Coffin on The We Tree Genealogy Blog.  You HAVE TO read this one - best genealogy humor of the year to date.

*  The Missing Piece by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  Solving genealogy puzzles is like solving jigsaw puzzles - James has great advice.

*  Climbing The Spiral Staircase: Learning Genealogy by Harold Henderson on the Archives.com Expert Series.  Harold describes the genealogy learning curve, and provides four practical research tips.

Several genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week, including:

Fab Finds in Genealogy for the Week of 8 January 2012 by GenuinelyLAF on the 1Ancestry2LittleTime blog.

Ruth's Recommendations by Ruth Blair on The Passionate Genealogist blog.

*  Fab Finds in Genealogy for the Week of 15 January 2012 by Genuinely LAF on the 1Ancestry2Little Time blog.

*  Weekly Rewind by Apple on the Apple's Tree blog.

I encourage readers to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Google Reader, RSS feed or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1140 genealogy bloggers using Google Reader, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
