Carringers in the News - W.H. Carringer Dies in 1941 in Indiana

 It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Times [Munster,Ind.] newspaper dated 25 February 1941:

The transcription of the article is:

"W. H. Carringer Dies At Home

"Wilbur H. Carringer, 77, pioneer Whiting resident and pensioned employe of the Standard Oil company of Indiana, died last night at 7:30 o'clock, at his home, 1818 LaPorte avenue.  He had been ailing for some time.

"Surviving are the widow, Mary; two sons, Harvey of College Station, Tex., Raymond of Elizabeth, N.J., seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

"Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the residence.  Rev. Clemens Koors of the Sacred Heart church will officiate.  Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Gary.

This obituary provides a death date and place, an age, the names of his wife and sons, an employer, and an association.

Wilbert H. Carringer (1863-1941) was born 28 August 1863 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the son of George W. and Mary C. (Hirt) Carringer.  He married Mary M. Lundy (1864-1943) in about 1884 in Pennsylvania. They had three children:

*  George Harvey Carringer (1890-1953), married 1938 Kathryn Kulak (1902-????)
*  James Raymond Carringer (1886-1966), married (1) 1909 Roberta Laughlin (1888-1958); (2) 1932 Margaret J. Hauck (1901-1974);
*  Irene Anna Carringer (1888-????), married 1912 Roger James MacMurray (1885-1949).

I am a first cousin three times removed to  Wilbert H. Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 3rd great-grandparents Henry Carringer (1800-1879) and Sarah Feather (1804-1848).

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person dies quietly at home and has a relatively short obituary.  I am glad that I can honor Wilbert H. Carringer today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
