According to the book A Genealogy of the Descendants of William Kelsey, who Settled in Cambridge, Mass. in 1632; at Hartford, Conn. in 1636; and Settled at Killingworth, Conn. in 1663 by Edward Claypool and Azalea Clizbee, Joseph Kelsey was the 5th son and 6th child of Mark and Rebecca (Hoskins) Kelsey, and was born about 1673 in Windsor, Connecticut[1].
Joseph married in 1697 to Joannes "Jane" DeCamp (1677-1739) in Elizabeth, New Jersey[1]. She was the daughter of Laurens Jansen and Aeltje "de Mandeville) DeCamp. They had nine children, all probably born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, but there are no birth records for them[1]:
* Mercy Kelsey (1698-1760), married 1722 Richard Cutter (1682-1756).
* Hannah Kelsey (1700-1777), married 1726 James Badgley (1699-1777).

Joseph Kelsey removed from Windsor, Connecticut to Elizabeth, New Jersey around the time of his marriage in about 1697[1].
The first record of "Joseph Kelsey, planter" in New Jersey is the purchase of 100 acres of land in Elizabeth from Robert Morse on 13 December 1700[1].
