There is always something new to search for, and I need to do more of that!
With the advent of OldNews.com that comes with my MyHeritage subscription, I have been putting my ancestor names in the MyHeritage search engine for "Names and Stories in Newspapers From OldNews.com..." collections and some articles pop up.
My second great-grandparents David Jackson "D.J." and Rebecca (Spangler) Carringer resided in the towns of Caribou and Boulder in Boulder County, Colorado from 1873 to 1898, but I knew very little about their lives there.
Here are the finds from my newspaper search for the Carringers in Boulder, Colorado in OldNews.com collection which includes Colorado:
1) From the Boulder News and Courier newspaper, dated 4 February 1881, page 3:
"Mr. D.J. Carringer has removed to the old Storey planing mill, where he will be pleased to meet his customers."
Now I know one of the names of the businesses that he worked for.
2) From the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper, dated 2 March 1893, page 1:
"E.T. Carr has been chosen by the Boulder Fruit Growers' association to have charge of all the shipping and the sale of all the fruit grown by the members. The officers of the association are W.L. Scott, president; J.W. Andrew, vice president and G.M. Anderson, S.B. Sutherland, A.L. Simpson, P. Glauer, and D.J. Carringer are directors. It is propsed to more advantageously market the fruit grown by the members by having one general agent..."
3) From the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper, dated 31 January 1894, page 1:
"At the meeting of the board of county commissioners of Boulder county which was held the first week in this month, upon the petition of about twenty of the fruit growers of this vicinity, D.J. Carringer, E.T. Carr and G.M. Anderson were appointed a county board of horticulture.
"Said board met on the 30th inst. and organized by electing D.J. Carringer president and G.M. Anderson secretary. After the organizatin of the board W.L. Scott was appointed county inspector to act under the provisions of the act passed by the ninth General Assembly of Colorado 'to protect and promote the horticultural interests of the state.'"
4) From the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper, dated 18 June 1895, page 4:
"Mrs. Carringer and child of San Diego, California, are here to spen the summer with D.J. Carringer and family."
This Mrs. Carringer is certainly Della (Smith) Carringer (my great-grandmother), wife of D.J.'s and Rebecca's son, Henry Austin Carringer. The child is certainly my grandfather, Lyle Lawrence Carringer, age 3 years at the time. They probably came on the train.
5) From the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper, dated 7 September 1898, page 8:
"D.J.Carringer, the fruit raiser residing north of Boulder, has sold out his place and left today for California."
Now I have a date that they left Boulder for San Diego, probably on the train.
6) From the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper, dated 18 January 1902, page 2:
"The many friends of Mrs. D.J. Carringer will be sorry to hear of her death which occurred in San Diego, Cal. a few days ago. Cancer of the stomach was the immediate cause. Mr. Carringer is, also, in poor health."
Sad news. We are reminded that our ancestors did not live in a vacuum - they had friends, associates, neighbors who interacted with them on a regular basis.
7) From the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper, dated 25 January 1902, page 8:
"It will be a great shock to many friends of D.J. Carringer to hear of his death which occurred on the 20th of this month in California. Kidney trouble was the cause of his death. His wife died only a month ago. He was buried in National City on Wednesday. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Carringer made their home here."
These articles have more information about D.J. Carringer that I did not have before.
