William Rich was born 11 March 1830 in Hilperton, Wiltshire, England, the 10th child (out of 11) and 6th son of John and Rebecca (Hill) Rich.[1] He was baptized in the Hilperton Church of England on 19 February 1837 parish church by curate J. Bailes. His father was listed as a weaver.
William Rich married Caroline Linzey (1832-1904) on 9 June 1851 in the Hilperton Church of England parish church by E.F. Boyle.[2] He was a bachelor, of full age, a weaver, born in Hilperton, father was John Rich, a weaver. Caroline was a spinster, age 20, a weaver, born in Hilperton, father was Benjamin Linzey, a weaver.
Caroline was born 16 April 1832 in Hilperton, Wiltshire, the daughter of Benjamin and Charlotte (Eyles) Linzey. She was baptized in the Hilperton Church of England parsih church on 6 May 1832.
William and Caroline (Linzey) Rich had eight children:
- Martha Rich was born before 22 February 1852 in Hilperton, Wiltshire, England. She was christened on 22 February 1852 in Hilperton, Wiltshire, England.
- Benjamin L. Rich, born 21 July 1855, Hilperton, Wiltshire, England; married Martha Edith Russell, 30 October 1895, Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts; died 23 July 1920, Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts.
- Miriam Rich, born about July 1857, Hilperton, Wiltshire, England; married Charles W. Fuller, about 1882, Connecticut; died 30 November 1940, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut.
- Samuel M. Rich, born 28 January 1859, Hilperton, Wiltshire, England; married Emily F. Rhodes, about 1880, Windham, Connecticut, United States; married Bertha May Hawkins, 17 May 1906, Putnam, Windham, Connecticut; died 10 May 1933, Putnam, Windham, Connecticut.United States.
- Frank Rich, born 2 April 1860, Hilperton, Wiltshire, England; married Mary Elizabeth Williams, about 1895, Rhode Island; died 4 December 1930, Putnam, Windham, Connecticut.
- Jesse E. Rich, born December 1863, Windham, Connecticut; married Lilla Belle Fincham, about 1888, Connecticut; died 27 October 1939, Putnam, Windham, Connecticut.
- Walter W. Rich, born December 1867, Windham, Connecticut, United States; married Villa Manette Park, 24 October 1900, Preston City, New London, Connecticut, United States; died 1943, Putnam, Windham, Connecticut, United States.
- Charles Wellington Rich, born 2 December 1873, Windham, Connecticut; married Lillian Emma Kingsbury, 26 April 1899, Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts; died 8 September 1937, Charlestown, Washington, Rhode Island.
In the 1861 England and Wales Census, the William Rich family resided in Trowbridge, Wiltshire at 30 Castle St.[3] The household included:
- William Rich - Head, Married, male, age 31, foreman in Wool Cloth Factory, born Wilts Hilperton
- Caroline Rich - Wife, Married, female, age 24, Wool Cloth Weaver, born Wilts Hilperton.
- Martha Rich - Daur, female, age 10, Domestic Assistant, born Wilts Hilperton.
- Benjamin Rich - son, male, age 6, Scholar, born Wilts Hilperton.
- Miriam Rich - Daur, female, age 4, Scholar, born Wilts Hilperton.
- Samuel Rich - son, male, age 2, born Wilts Hilperton.
- Frank Rich - son, male, age 1, born Wilts Trowbridge.
In late 1861, the William Rich family migrated from Wiltshire to Putnam, Connecticut, likely sailing from Bristol or Liverpool to New York City. They joined William's brother Samuel Rich, and his sister, Hannah (Rich) Richman, there.
In the 1870 United States Census, the William Rich family resided in Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut.[4] The household include3d:

- Nelson Rich - age 11, male, white, born England, father and mother are foreign born, attended school. [this is probably an error, it's probably daughter Miriam]

- Frank Rich - age 8, male, white, born England, father and mother are foreign born, attended school.
- Jesse Rich - age 7, male, white, born Connecticut, father and mother are foreign born, attended school

- William Rich - Head, white, male, born Mar 1830, age 70, married, for 49 years, born England, father born England, mother born England, immigrated 1861, 39 years in US, naturalized citizen, an overseer in woolen mill, can read, write and speak English, owns home free of mortgage
- Caroline Rich - Wife, white, female, born Apl 1832, age 68, married, for 49 years, 8 children born, 8 living, born England, father born England, mother born England, immigrated 1861, in US 39 years, can read, write and speak English
- Walter Rich - Son, white, male, born Dec 1867, age 32, single, born Connecticut, father born England, mother born England, a pattern maker in foundry, can read, write and speak English.
Caroline (Linzey) Rich died 28 March 1904 in Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut, leaving William Rich a widower. William Rich died 6 April 1914 in Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut.[7] Both of them were buried in Grove Street Cemetery in Putnam.[8]
A short obituary was published in the Hartford (Conn.] Courant newspaper on Wednesday, 8 April 1914 on page 9:
"William Rich.
"William Rich, an old resident of Putnam, died there on Monday evening. He was born in England, March 13, 1830, and came to Putnam in 1863 and became foreman in a dressing room of the Moriarty woolen mills. He retired from active work twenty-five years ago to care for his wife, who was an invalid, and who died ten years ago. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Miriam Fuller of Worcester, Mass., and six sons, Benjamin and Charles of Fitchb urg, Mass., Frank of Thompson, and Jesse, Walter and Samuel of Putnam.
"The funeral will be held at his home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. J.R. Stubbert, pastor of the Baptist Church, officiating."
