Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:
It's Saturday Night again -
Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!
Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:
1) Did you have good genealogy fun this past week? Did you add to your family Tree? Did you make a great discovery? Did you try something new? Did you make family history?
2) Share your genealogy fun in this past week on your own blog post or in a Facebook, SubStack or BlueSky post. Leave a link on this blog post to help us find your Mom photos.
Here's mine:
My "best" genealogy fun this past week was making more family history with my daughter Lori and two of my grandchildren (Lucas age 21 and Logan age 19). The boys were visiting their mother in Santa Cruz and wanted to come visit Linda and me. They drove to Chula Vista (only 530 miles or so) on Thursday, arriving around 2 p.m. I also had a chore list that they could help me with because of my physical limitations.
When they arrived, I showed them the backyard patio cover that recently "fell" about 12 inches on one end when termites devastated the large beam that attached the cover to the house. The immediate reaction was "we can demolish that!" They devised a plan to do it but we needed a saw to cut through all of the wood (3 4x6 beams, 6 2x4 cross beams, and about 60 1x1 lath cross beams). And we needed a plan to get rid of the wood and debris.
In the evening, Lori made chicken soup (she is such a good cook!) because I can have only soft food for awhile (I didn't mention my tooth #21 extraction that occurred on Thursday morning...) and then we played Chickenfeet (a domino game) which was fun - I won!
On Friday morning, we went to visit Linda at her skilled nursing and memory care facility, and we played Uno. Linda doesn't remember their names but enjoyed the attention. We then went to lunch at In 'n' Out and went to the Home Depot to buy a SawsAll, eye protection, and gloves. Lucas is experienced with a SawsAll.
After more deliberation about how to demolish the patio cover without hurting anyone or the h ouse, we set to it. Lucas did the saw work. Lori and Logan held up the portion being sawed, and Randy cleared debris and tried to stay out of the way. We ended up with big piles of portions of the patio cover on the backyard grass which needed to be broken down more. Lucas did that, and then we all carried the debris to Lori's van and she and Lucas took it to the dump. They need to do another dump run on Saturday morning. All in all, we avoided injuries and got a big job done. I'm impressed by the energy and the knowledge of my descendants!
After naps, we went out to dinner at D'Lish, our favorite Italian restaurant in Chula Vista. We were home by 6:30 p.m., and we hooked up the TV to Apple+ to watch the Padres game against the Mariners. The Padres lost 5-1.
All day long, there was banter and stories and catching up with everybody's busy lives (um, mine is only busy on the computer). Each of them is living a different life than a year ago - Lori has an empty next with her cats, friends and day job, Lucas is living with his father in Portland, and Logan just completed his first year of college in Nebraska. Randy just plugs along publishing genealogy content and thinking about an ebook of family biographies.
Today, we will visit Linda again, get a tarp and install it in the backyard, and go to the Padres game at 5:430 p.m. in Petco Park. Lori and her boys are big Padres fans, and we have gone to one or more games almost every year since Lucas was born. They head to Santa Cruz on Sunday.
Our family history weekend is not done yet!
What about Genealogy Fun? Well, every AI-assisted post I do is a lot of fun because I'm learning about social history, identifying my ancestors place in history, and writing biographies, poems and songs about them every week.
