Amanuensis Monday -- 1802 Deed of Josiah Sawtell Selling Land to Seth Montague in Worcester County, Massachusetts

 This week's document for transcription is the  1802 Deed of Josiah Sawtell selling 60 acres of land to Seth Montague for $625 in Worcester County, Massachusetts.

Sawtell Josiah  }  
      to                  }  Know all men by these presents that I Josiah 
Seth Montague } Sawtel of Mason in the County of Hillsborough & State of New 
Hampshire Cooper in consideration of six hundred and twenty 
five dollars paid by Seth Montague of Pepperell in the 
County of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Tailor 
The receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge do hereby give 
grant bargain sell and convey unto the said Seth Montague his 
heirs and assigns forever a certain farm in the northwestwardly 
part of Ashburnham on the road leading to Rindge containing
about sixty acres butted and bounded as follows viz begining at said 
road at the southeastwardly corner thence runing northwardly 
by Samuel Forten land to a stake and stones northwardly 
by said Forten meadow thence by Enos Jones meadow to a stake 
and stones ye head of said meadow thence eastwardly by said Jones 
land to a stake and stones thence northwardly by said Jones 
land to a northwardly corner of the premises thence westwardly by 
Edward Jones to a large White pine stump with Stones on it 
y'e northwestwardly corner thence southwardly by said road to 
where it began be the same more or less together with the buildings
thereon and all the priviledges thereto belonging preserving how-
ever a bridle way how across said premises between Enos Jones and 
Lawrence's farm so called not oblidging him the said Monta-
gue to repair said bridle way.
          To have and to hold the same to the said Montague 
his heirs and assigns to his & their use and behoof forever & 
I do covenant with the said Montague his heirs and assigns 
that I am lawfully seized in fee of the premises that they are 
free from all incumbrances and that I will warrant and 
defend the same to the said Seth Montague Montague his heirs & assigns 
forever against the lawful claims and demand of all persons 
whatever. In witness whereof I the said Sawtell together with
Hannah my wife have hereunto set our hands & seals this fifth 
Day of April ADomini one thousand eight hundred & two

This is a Derivative Source (because it is a court clerk's transcription of the original deed with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the names of the two parties, and the dates of the deed execution, signing and recording.  

Josiah Sawtell (1768-1847) was born 24 January 1768 in Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, the son of Ephraim and Abigail (Stone) Sawtell. He married Hannah Smith (1768-1827) on 5 October 1789 in Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.  Josiah died 7 December 1847 in Townsend, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  They had nine children.

Josiah and Hannah (Smith) Sawtell are my 4th great-grandparents, through their daughter Hannah Sawtell (1789-1857) who married Zachariah Hildreth (1784-1857) in 1810 in Townsend, Massachuseetts.
