Using Steve Little's Deep Look Forensic Photograph Analyst

I forgot to try Steve Little's "Deep Look V2" back in March 2026 when it was released.  Last week, Steve commented in a Facebook post that Deep Look V2 could run in OpenAI's Image-Gen-2 model (see https://www.facebook.com/groups/1255245945084761/?multi_permalinks=2072591003350247&hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen&__cft__[0]=AZb5ykcaKu9cwjQ2yxDIj3RX4zGKhuPiYdBP95gD5dJ5o94HW_X7IXNIVULplPtk9_ohDuuC2g5ceTPhIlz_IRtqMa5Dzgc38rdVkVn55Q2ZAlxqA1DGJ-RRpwgUgHvwv1MgXSLGjKy5O_oPEi0SSgCv&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R) now and I wanted to try it out.

The link to the Custom Prompt in OpenAI ChatGPT5 is https://chatgpt.com/g/g-69bfd6f3f4088191b340a39c62c494c3-deep-look.  I uploaded my 1920 Carringer family photograph shown below as a black and white image:

My text prompt to the Free ChatGPT5 was:  "Please analyze this photograph."

The prompt summary for this prompt is:  "Forensic image analyst: extract all visible text, details, composition, context, provenance, and structured data; separate observation from inference; never fabricate."

Here is the extensive ChatGPT5 response:

Deep Look Analysis of the Photograph

Important note: The filename supplied with the image contains identifying information ("Betty Carringer – 1920 – San Diego CA – 2105 30th St with Lyle, Emily, Austin, Della, Georgianna, Matie"). I treat the filename as external metadata, not visual evidence. My visual analysis is based on what is observable in the photograph itself, while noting where the filename may support interpretation.

1. First Impression

Summary: A multi-generational family portrait taken outdoors in a garden setting, likely in the early 20th century.

This appears to be a posed family gathering consisting of eight visible people and a cat. Three people are seated in front, four adults and one younger male stand behind them, and a baby is held on one seated adult's lap. The photograph conveys family continuity, respectability, and domestic life.

The emotional tone is formal but affectionate. Although most subjects maintain the restrained expressions common in early photography, the inclusion of a cat and infant softens the image and suggests a family rather than institutional portrait.

Purpose appears to be:

  • Family documentation

  • Commemorative portrait

  • Possibly marking a visit, reunion, or milestone involving the infant

8. Context & Provenance

Summary: The photograph likely documents a family network spanning grandparents, parents, children, and a new baby.

Dating

Visual evidence strongly suggests:

1915–1925

Reasons:

  • Women's blouse construction

  • Skirt silhouettes

  • Men's collars and ties

  • Young male's bow tie style

  • Hair arrangements

If the filename date of 1920 is original family information, it fits the visual evidence extremely well.

Geography

Visual clues:

  • Palm tree

  • Dense ornamental planting

  • Veranda architecture

These support:

  • Southern California

  • Gulf Coast

  • Similar warm climates

The filename reference to San Diego is plausible.

Original Context

Most likely:

  • Family keepsake

  • Home portrait

  • Visit or reunion

The infant may have been a central reason for gathering.

Authenticity

Appears genuine.

No evidence of:

  • Composite work

  • Retouching

  • Artificial staging beyond normal posing

9. Interpretation & Research Leads

Summary: The image celebrates family continuity and domestic stability.

Narrative

The photograph places family lineage at the center.

Key symbolic elements:

  • Elder generation seated prominently

  • Infant representing future generation

  • Cat representing household domesticity

  • Home serving as family backdrop

Cultural Values

Reflects:

  • Family cohesion

  • Respect for elders

  • Home ownership/status

  • Multi-generational identity

Genealogical Leads

If researching the family named in the filename:

Search:

  • 1920 U.S. Census

  • 1910 U.S. Census

  • 1930 U.S. Census

  • San Diego city directories

  • Property records for 2105 30th Street

  • Birth records matching infant age

10. Report & Catalog

Proposed Title

Three Generations in a Garden with Infant and Cat

Narrative Synthesis

This outdoor family portrait depicts nine figures if the infant is counted separately: four adults seated in front, four standing behind, and a baby held on the lap of an elderly mustached man. A striped tabby cat rests comfortably in the arms of a seated woman at the center of the group. The gathering takes place in a landscaped yard dominated by a large palm tree on the left and dense shrubs on the right. Behind the family stands a substantial house with decorative porch railings, suggesting a comfortable residential setting.

The arrangement emphasizes family hierarchy and continuity. Older adults occupy the seated positions, while younger family members stand behind them. The infant serves as a symbolic focal point, representing the newest generation. Formal clothing, restrained expressions, and careful posing are characteristic of family portraits from the late 1910s and early 1920s. The inclusion of the household cat introduces warmth and informality into an otherwise conventional portrait. The image records not merely individuals but a family unit embedded within a home landscape, preserving relationships, status, and memory for future generations.

Conclusion

Most likely date: 1915–1925 (1920 is highly plausible if filename metadata is accurate)

Most likely setting: Private residence in a warm-climate region, possibly Southern California

Significance: Documents a multi-generational family group, domestic environment, and social presentation of an early twentieth-century household.

Major unanswered questions:

  1. Which individuals correspond to the names in the filename?

  2. Is the infant the occasion for the gathering?

  3. Is the house the family's residence?

  4. Was the photograph taken by a family member or local photographer?

Keywords

family portrait, garden, infant, cat, grandparents, Edwardian, California, domestic life, genealogy, residence

Alt-Text

Eight family members and a baby pose outdoors beside a palm tree and house; a seated woman holds a striped cat while a seated man holds an infant.

Recreation Test

A designer could recreate:

  • Four seated adults

  • Four standing relatives

  • Infant on elderly man's lap

  • Tabby cat in center woman's arms

  • Palm tree left

  • House with porch center rear

  • Shrubs right

  • Early-1920s attire

  • Outdoor sunlight from upper left

Uncertainties

  • Exact identities of individuals

  • Exact year

  • Exact location

  • Family relationships

  • Whether the house is their residence

Recommended Next Steps

  1. Scan original at 1200 dpi or higher.

  2. Examine reverse side for inscriptions.

  3. Enhance contrast digitally to recover facial detail.

  4. Compare faces against identified family photographs.

  5. Research 2105 30th Street historical ownership records.

  6. Match household members against the 1920 census if the filename provenance is reliable.

==================================

That certainly is a VERY DEEP look at my photograph.  I am not a photograph analysis expert but the above description helps!

Fortunately, I know the location of the photo (2105 30th Street in San Diego, an approximate time for the photo (likely early 1920, and the persons in the photograph.  My mother, Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002) is the baby in the photograph, held by her grandfather, Henry Austin Carringer (1853-1946. I still don't know the tabby cat's name (Whiskers? Tabby?).

Thank you to Steve Little for providing very detailed, useful and helpful Custom Prompts to the genealogy and family history community.
