4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The book by Frederick Clifton Pierce, Whitney.  The Descendants of John Whitney (Chicago, 1895)[1] provides an excellent family history of the Nathaniel Whitney family.  The Whitney Family Research Group wiki page for Nathaniel Whitney updates the sketch for the family[2].

Sary Hagar was born 1 September 1651 in Watertown, Massachusetts, the daughter of William and Mary (Bemis) Hagar[3-5].  The Watertown town record entry says:

"Sary Hagar daughter of william and Mary borne 1^st of September [1651]"

She married Nathaniel Whitney on 12 March 1673/4 in Watertown[1-4,8-9].  He was the son of John and Ruth (Reynolds) Whitney of Watertown.  The Watertown town record entry says:

" Nathanell Whetny and Sary Hagar Joyned in Marriage the 12 of March [1673]"

Sarah and Nathaniel had eight children, all but the last recorded in Watertown[1-2]:

*  Nathaniel Whitney (1676-1730), married 1695 Mercy Robinson (1676-1740).
*  Sarah Whitney (1679-????), married 1699 Charles Chadwick (1674-1711).
*  William Whitney (1683-1720), married 1706 Martha Peirce (1681-1759).
*  Samuel Whitney (1687-1753), married 1721 Anne Laborie (1698-1753).
*  Hannah Whitney (1689-1768), married 1708 Nathaniel Billings (1688-1769).
*  Elizabeth Whitney (1692-????), married 1714 Joseph Harrington (1691-????).
*  Mercy Whitney (1696-????), married 1717 FNU Graves (1697-????).
*  Grace Whitney (1700-1720).

Sarah's father, William Hagar of Watertown, wrote his will on 10 January 1683/4 and it was proved on 1 April 1684[6].  In his will, he bequeathed to his daughter Sarah Whitney:

" I give unto my daughter Sarah Whitney five pounds to be paid within four years after my decease in corn & cattle."

The Nathaniel Whitney house was in the western part of Watertown which became the town of Weston in about 1707[2].

Sarah (Hagar) Whitney died on 29 July 1722 in Weston, Massachusetts[5,7].  The Weston vital records book entry says[7]:

"Sarah [Whitny], wf. of Nath[anie]ll., d. Jul. 29, 1722"

Sarah Hagar Whitney (1651-1722) was buried in Farmers Burial Ground in Weston[5].

Seavers in the News -- Nellie V. Seaver Dies in 1915 in Ellsworth, Kansas

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Ellsworth [KS] Messenger newspaper dated 14 January 1915:

The transcription of the article is:

"AT REST"

Entered into rest Saturday night, January 9, 1915, at Ellsworth, Kansas, Nellie V. Seaver, aged 59 years, 5 months and 17 days.  Mrs. Seaver was born at Nunda, New York, July 23, 1855.

"The Episcopal service was read at the home of the Rev. Michael Cady on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and interment was in the Ellsworth cemetery.

"Mrs. Seaver is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Charles Sutton, of Lawrence, Kas; two sons, William R. of Ellsworth, and Charles, of Chicago, Ill.; and one sister, Mrs. John Montgomery of Junction City, Kas.

"Mrs. Seaver was among the very early settlers of this county, coming with her parents as a young girl to Ellsworth, and has always made this city her home."

The source citation is:

"At Rest," Ellsworth [KS] Messenger newspaper, obituary, Thursday, 14 January 1915, page 1, column 4, Nellie V. Seaver obituary; Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 26 December 2019).

This obituary has a birth and death date for Nellie V. Seaver, the names of her three children and her sister, but not the name of her husband.

From my RootsMagic family tree, I see that Nellie Viola Henry was born 23 July 1855 in Nunda, New York, the daughter of Marcus W. and Mary Elizabeth (Dildene) Henry.  She married (1) about 1871 Chauncey Belden Whitney (1842-1873), and they had one child:

*  Mary Elizabeth Whitney (1872-1956), who married 1897 Charles Elliott Sutton (1869-1954).

Nellie (Henry) Whitney married (2) about 1877 Vincent B. Osborne (1839-1879), and they had one child:

*  Katie H. Osborne (1877-1877)

Nellie (Henry) (Whitney) Osborne married (3) Linus Homer Seaver (1849-1915) on 6 February 1881 in Saint Joseph, Missouri, and they had two children:

*  William Rufus Seaver (1881-1967), married 1915 Flora A. Copple (1889-1964), one daughter.
*  Charles Homer Seaver (1884-1951), married 1912 Grace Mary Marsh (1885-1955), four children.

I posted the obituary of Nellie's husband, Linus Homer Seaver, in Seavers in the News -- L.H. Seaver Dies in Ramona, California.

I am a 2nd cousin 4 times removed to Linus Homer Seaver and a 3rd cousin 3 times removed to his children.  Our common ancestors are my 5th great-grandparents, Norman and Sarah (Read) Seaver.

There are over 8,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes the life of a person has some sad parts - in this case the death of two husbands and one child.  I am glad I can honor Nellie Viola (Henry) (Whitney) (Osborne) Seaver today.

Treasure Chest Thursday - 1651 Birth Record of Sary Hagar in Watertown, Mass.

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1651 birth record of "Sary" Hagar in Watertown, Massachusetts town records:

The birth record for Sarah Hagar is near the bottom of the right-hand column on the image above:

This record says:

Sary Hagar daughter of william and Mary borne 1^st of September [1651]

The source citation for this record is:

.Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988, indexed database and digital image, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com : accessed 24 November 2012), Watertown births, Marriages and deaths, Page 24 (image 133 of 3991), Sary Hagar birth entry, 1 September 1651.

This record is an Original Source with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the name of Sarah Hagar, her parents names, and her birth date and place.

Sarah Hagar (1651-1722) was the daughter of William and Mary (Bemis) Hagar of Watertown.  She married Nathaniel Whitney (1646-1733) on 12 March 1673/4 in Watertown.  They had eight children born in Watertown, and Sarah died 29 July 1722 in Weston, Massachusetts, which was part of Watertown before about 1707.

Nathaniel and Sarah (Hagar) Whitney are my 7th great-grandparents, through their son William Whitney (1683-1720), who married Martha Peirce (1681-1759) in 1706 in Watertown.

On Christmas Day...My Ancestors That Had a Special Event

I woke up this morning wondering which of my ancestors were born, married, or died on Christmas Day throughout history.

How do I find out?  Well, the RootsMagic genealogy family tree program has a report called "On This Day" and I plugged in December 25 and it gave me nine pages of events and names (about 380 of them) from the nearly 56,000 persons in my database.  I went through the list, and confirmed that the below events occurred on Christmas Day for my ancestors:

BIRTHS:

*  1646:  Elizabeth Pierce in Charlestown, Massachusetts - 7th great-grandmother
*  1732:  Benedict Oatley in South Kingstown, Rhode Island - 5th great-grandfather

MARRIAGES:

*  1647:  Robert Treat and Jane Tapp in Milford, Connecticut - 9th great-grandparents
*  1666:  Joseph Farwell and Hannah Learned in Chelmsford, Massachusetts - 8th great-grandparents
*  1693:  Thomas Horton and Susannah LNU in Rehoboth, Massachusetts - 8th great grandfather
*  1740:  Jonas Prescott and Rebecca Jones in Concord, Massachusetts - 6th great-grandfather
*  1852:  Edward Hildreth and Sophia Newton in Northborough, Massachusetts - 2nd great-grandparents

DEATHS:

*  1637:  John Sweet in Salem, Massachusetts - 10th great-grandfather

Here is the marriage certificate for my second great-grandparents Edward Hildreth and Sophia Newton, who married on 25 December 1852:

They were young - 21 and 18.  The marriage was probably performed in the Northborough church or at the bride's home by Minister S.S. Ashley.

Among the long list of events, there is a Mary Christmas Auble who was born in 1897 in Forest, Indiana.  What a great and appropriate name!  She is a 4th cousin twice removed, not an ancestor.

I also noted that Linda's second great-grandmother, Rachel Morley (1821-1861) was baptized on Christmas Day in Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire.  She was an illegitimate child and had a twin sister named Leah who was also baptized on Christmas Day.

I expected to find more births and deaths of ancestors.  However, I don't have an exact birth or marriage or death date for some ancestors because of a lack of records or my own negligence.

I'm happy that at least eight of my ancestors married on Christmas Day (two were second marriages not to my ancestor) and I hope they enjoyed the event.

Well, that was some genealogy fun on Christmas Day.  Now on to the Ancestry Hints before my nap and dinner out somewhere tonight.

Randy Visits Santa Claus -- Post 597 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I'm posting family photographs from my collection on Wednesdays, but they aren't Wordless Wednesday posts like others do - I simply am incapable of having a wordless post.

Here is a photograph from the Seaver/Carringer family collection handed down by my mother in the 1988 to 2002 time period:

This photograph was probably taken at Marston's Department Store in downtown San Diego where my grandfather worked for 55 years. This photo was probably taken in the 1947 to 1950 time frame, when I was 4 to 7 years old. My guess is that my grandfather, Lyle Carringer, took this picture, although my mother may have taken it.

It looks like Santa has a good hold on me - an arm around my waist and a hand holding down my left arm. I was never scared of Santa Claus, so my smile is genuine and anticipatory. Either that, or someone made a funny face at me when the picture was snapped.

I wish I could remember what I asked for from Santa Claus.  I'm quite sure it wasn't socks, pants or shirts.  It was probably the "toy of the year."  The Cootie game? Maybe Mr. Potato-head?  Or a small bicycle with training wheels?

                           ==============================================

FYI:  I've posted this photo almost every year at Christmas time.

Merry Christmas to All!

There is a reason for the season! Thank you, God, for your Gift to the Earth.

Merry Christmas to all of my Christian readers and friends. I hope that this day finds you healthy, happy, with family and friends, and that Santa brings you everything you desire.

We are home for the holidays - Lori and her boys came down from Santa Cruz on Friday last and went home on Monday, and Tami and her family came on Sunday for the day to share gifts, go out to lunch, and exercise the kids at Jump Around.  Linda and I have our presents for each other under the tree, and we will open them on Christmas morning with the lights sparkling and the rain coming down outside.  We will go out for Christmas dinner, just the two of us, unless we get a last minute invitation.

I might even write a blog post, or work in the RootsMagic database, or resolve some Ancestry Hints.  I may watch some football (who's playing?  I have no clue).  And read Facebook.  Maybe even take a nap in my Santa hat.

'Twas the Night Before a Genealogist's Christmas ...

I received this parody of Clement Moore's masterpiece via email back in the mid-1990's, the author is unknown to me. Kimberly Powell at the About Genealogy page also has it on her site.

'Twas the night before Christmas
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even my spouse.

The dining room table with clutter was spread
With pedigree charts and with letters which said...
"Too bad about the data for which you wrote;
Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat."

Stacks of old copies of wills and such
Were proof that my work had become too much.
Our children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.

And I at my table was ready to drop
From work on my album with photos to crop.
Christmas was here, and such was my lot
That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot.

Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills,
I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills,
While others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheers,
I'd spent time researching those birth dates and years.

While I was thus musing about my sad plight,
A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright.
Away to the window I flew in a flash,
Tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash.

When what with my wondering eyes should appear,
But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer.
Up to the house top the reindeer they flew,
With a sleigh full of toys and 'ole Santa Claus, too.

And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs.
As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash,
Down the cold chimney fell Santa--KER-RASH!

"Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck,
And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!)
Spotting my face, good 'ole Santa could see
I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work
And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk).
Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy:
When I'd been too busy for even one toy.

He spied my research on the table all spread
"A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!)
"Tonight I've met many like you," Santa grinned,
As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned.

I gazed with amusement--the cover it read
Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead.
"I know what it's like as a genealogy bug." He said
as he gave me a great Santa hug.

"While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry,
I do some research in the North Pole Library!
A special treat I am thus able to bring,
To genealogy folk who can't find a thing."

"Now off you go to your bed for a rest,
I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess."
As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee,
I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me.

While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle,
To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle.
And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,
"Family History is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!"

--Author Unknown

To all, I wish a very Merry Christmas, and I hope Genea-Santa brings you a special gift for your family history.
