Best of the Genea-Blogs: Week of 5 to 11 May 2024

Scores of genealogy and family history bloggers write hundreds of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for most daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  10 Company Blogs You Shouldn’t Miss by Bob Taylor on The Family History Guide Blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and  read their articles, and add the blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I currently am reading posts from over 900 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

Effie Eva Carringer's (1858-1874) Gravestone in Boulder, Colorado

One of my great-grandaunts is Effie Eva Carringer (1858-1874), the daughter of my maternal great-grandparents David Jackson and Rebecca (Spangler) Carringer.  I found her Find A Grave memorial today, and was saddened by the fact that the gravestone was broken and sunken, obscuring part of the stone's engraving.  Here are photographs from her Find A Grave memorial:

The Find A Grave memorial source citation is:

Find a Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/50002485/effie_eva-carringer: accessed May 9, 2024), memorial page for Effie Eva Carringer (24 Nov 1858–7 Jun 1874), Find a Grave Memorial ID 50002485, citing Columbia Cemetery, Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado, USA; Maintained by Tess Warnstaff (contributor 47249734).

The photographs were taken by AmyS in 2014. Apparently, the stone is in storage.  Thank you so much to Amy, who granted me permission to use her photos.

There is another photograph on the Find A Grave memorial - taken in 2010 by Smontee when the stone was still standing:

Effie Carringer's stone apparently was repaired by August 1999.  It may be that it was broken after that date and was placed in storage.

I found a newspaper article on GenealogyBank from the Sunday Camera newspaper of Boulder, Colorado dated 15 August 1999:

The transcription of the article is:

"COLUMBIA CEMETERY PROJECT

"Volunteers complete restoration training

"Historic Boulder cemetery is getting a much-needed face lift.

By Margie McAlister
Camera Staff Writer

"In 1874, Effie Carringer's family lovingly brought the 14-year-old girl's body down from Caribou for burial in Boulder's Columbia Cemetery, and they hired stone masons to inscribe these words on Effie's marble tablet:

"'But a fair maiden in the father's mansion, clothed with celestial grace and beautiful with all the soul's expansion, shall thee behold her face.'"

"Through the next century, Effie's tombstone sank at least 20 inches into the grassy slope.  In the past decade, visitors could read only the first words, 'But a fair maiden in her father's mansion..."  The rest of the epitaph was covered with mud and rocks.

"Saturday, Effie Carringer's stone got much needed attention as volunteers chipped away rocks, dug through the gravesite's base and tried to lift the stone from its grassy plot.  The work is part of a year-long conservation project, begun in March and supported by the Colorado Historical Society and Historic Boulder, that will restore the neglected pioneer cemetery at Ninth and Pleasant streets.  Saturday was the final day of training for 20 volunteers for the project who now have experience in patching gravestones.

"Jack Smith, retired chief archaeologist at Mesa Verde National Park, knelt in the damp dirt near Effie Carringer's tombstone Saturday, chiseling the cemented anchor rock.  Smith was doing the kind of work he always liked, digging into the past.

"'I can't give it up,' he said, 'I like this because its history and preserving history.'

"About 3,040 gravesites in the cemetery need some degree of restoration, according to project director Mary Reilly McNellan.  The work is paid through a $98,000 Colorado Historical Society grant matched by a $8,000 Historic Boulder grant and City Parks Department funds.  The total budget is $151,000.

"In addition to fixing the stones, volunteers are cutting back tree limbs, restoring the historic fence along Ninth Street, and landscaping around the plots.

"Boulder's cemetery conservation project is the first such effort in Colorado, said Julie Hendee, a consultant in the project.  However, the idea has been around for decades.  'It's really big in the Northeast because the cemeteries are older,' said McNellan.

"'A cemetery is a fabulous learning tool,' McNelland said, 'We learn from epidemics, geology, statistics -- with all the math and ages -- botany from all the plantings and folklore.  For example, some o the graves are covered with yucca or cactus so the spirit will not wander.'

"McNellan does 'Walks in the Cemetery' for Historic Boulder, introducing people to Columbia's silent inhabitants.  Over the years, she has worried about losing pieces of the history that the cemetery holds.

"'One of the first things I did was take a Union Soldier's stone that had been resting against the east fence and find out where he belonged,' she said, 'I was afraid someone would take the stone.  Vandals have taken many stones over the years.  Others are water-damaged.'

"Columbia tombstones are conserved through repairing, re-propping and cleaning rather than by restoring the original stone, McNellan said.

"Consulant Hendee spent Saturday teaching volunteers how to pull up bases and clean stones.  Her grandfather owned a monument company.

"'I grew up in old cemeteries and have exceeding affection for them,' she said, 'They are a repository of culture.  They are history, often the only records for someone.  They are outdoor art galleries.  Foremost, cemetery land is sacred ground.'"

Amen to all of that!!!  Thank you to the volunteers who worked on this project, and to all of the volunteers who work in every cemetery to restore and conserve these outdoor art galleries.

"Volunteers complete restoration training," Sunday Camera [Boulder, Colo.] newspaper, 15 August 1999, page B1, columns 2-4; imaged, GenealogyBank (https://www.genealogybank.com : accessed 8 May 2024).

I cannot imagine the emotional pain and physical suffering of a 15-year old girl dying, and the impact it has on a family.  I am sure that my great-grandfather Henry Austin Carringer, at age 20, and his parents and brother, felt a great loss.  I can't imagine taking a 15-year old daughter from her home to be buried in a cemetery in a nearby town.

Happy Mother's Day - My Matrilineal Line Carrying Mitochondrial DNA

For Mother's Day, I thought I would post something about my mother's ancestry, and about my mitochondrial DNA which I received from her.

My mitochondrial DNA haplogroup is K1b2b (per 23andMe), which I received from my mother, and she received it from her mother, and she from her mother, and so on down the line for time immemorial (for thousands of generations, with mutations every so often, probably).

Here is a favorite photograph of my mother (Betty Virginia Carringer, 1919-2002), with her mother (Emily Kemp (Auble) Carringer, 1899-1977), and her mother's mother (Gerogianna (Kemp) Auble (1868-1952).  The photograph was enhanced and colorized on MyHeritage, taken in 1920 on the front steps of the Carringer home at 2130 Fern Street in San Diego:

This is the only three generation photograph I have of my mother's matrilineal line.

My (and my brothers') matrilineal line is:

a) Randall J. Seaver (1943-????)

b) Mother Betty Virginia Carringer (1919 San Diego CA - 2002 San Diego CA) married Frederick W. Seaver. They had 3 sons, no daughters, so we are at the end of our mitochondrial branch.

c) Grandmother Emily Kemp Auble (1899 Chicago IL -1977 San Diego CA) married Lyle L. Carringer. They had only one child (my mother).

d) Great-grandmother Georgianna Kemp (1868 Norfolk County, ON - 1952 San Diego CA) married Charles Auble. They had only one child, my grandmother.

e) 2nd great-grandmother Mary Jane Sovereen (1840 Norfolk Co ON - 1874 Norfolk Co ON) married James Abram Kemp. They had 3 daughters and one son who had children. There are definitely K1b2b carriers from the other daughters.

f) 3rd great-grandmother Eliza Putman (1820 Steuben Co NY - 1895 Norfolk Co ON) married Alexander Sovereen. They had 14 children, but only 5 daughters and two sons married and had children. There may be K1b2b carriers from the other daughters.

g) 4th great-grandmother Sarah Martin (1792 Middlesex Co NJ - 1860 Norfolk Co ON) married John Putman. They had 3 daughters and two sons, so there may be K1b2b carriers from the other daughters.

h) 5th great-grandmother Betsey Rolfe (1766 Middlesex Co NJ - ????) married Mulford Martin. They had 2 daughters and two sons that had children, so there may be K1b2b carriers from the other daughters.

i) 6th great-grandmother Sarah Campbell (1746 NJ? -1838 Tompkins Co NY) married Ephraim Rolfe. They had 5 daughters and three sons that had children, so there may be K1b2b carriers from the other daughters.

j) 7th great-grandmother Elizabeth LNU (1723 Philadelphia, PA? -????) married Robert Campbell (?). I don't know dear Elizabeth's maiden name but surmise she was of Scottish or Irish heritage. I don't know how many children she had besides Sarah.

Each of these mothers is special to me - I wouldn't be here, in this form or place, without them. They lived, loved, and died trying to be the best person, wife and mother they could be. They loved every child they had, and wanted only the best for them.

I have 12 DNA matches (with Ancestry ThruLines) who are descended from 2nd great-grandmother Mary Jane (Sovereen) Kemp who have a matrilineal line back to Mary Jane! I have 4 more DNA Matches (with Ancestry ThruLines) who are descended from 3rd great-grandmother Eliza (Putman) Sovereen. I also have 5 more DNA Matches (with Ancestry ThruLines) who are descended from my 4th great-grandmother Sarah (Martin) Putman (1792-1860). Finally, I have 4 more DNA matches (with Ancestry ThruLines) who are descended from 5th great-grandmother Betsy (Rolfe) Martin (1766-????).

Are there any cousins reading this who have these same ancestors of mine? I would love to hear from you.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- A Genealogy Fun Day

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night Again -

Time For Some More Genealogy Fun!!

Come on, everybody, join in and accept the mission and execute it with precision.

1)  When was the last time you had Genealogy Fun?  It could be research, conferences, a society meeting, or just talking with friends about your research, a favorite trip, etc.  Tell us about a recent genealogy fun day!

2)  Share your answers on your own blog or in a Facebook post.  Please leave a link on this post if you write your own post.

Here's mine:

It seems like I have Genealogy Fun almost every day that I read blogs, write blog posts, do some research on Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch.  Here are some of my recent FUN efforts:

1)  I was asked a month ago by the Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz County if I would give a presentation on "Randy's Top 10 Genealogy Search Tips."  I last did that talk in 2020, so I had to review and revise the presentation and then sync it to the revised handout.  That didn't take very long, since I used the same tips, but had to replace some screen captures.  I gave the talk on Tuesday this past week on Zoom, and the audience had favorable comments.  Amazingly, I had a call to give another talk to another California society on Thursday, and said yes.  I haven't given a presnetation since late 2021, so I was a bit rusty.  I do lead two monthly Zoom meetings for the Chula Vista Genealogical Society using Zoom but without a prepared presentation - it's usually a tour of genealogy-related websites or programs.

2)  I was an early adopter (2011?) of the WikiTree shared tree - it's FREE, it's source centric, what's not to like?  In 2011 and 2012, I uploaded about 7,000 profiles using GEDCOM files to add all of my anxcestral families (as I knew at the time) and hoped someone else would make the Notes and sources readable because I couldn't figure out how to format the information after uploading them.  I added more profiles over time, but still don't know how to do it efficiently and with a readable exposition of notes and sources.

Then I was asked last month if I would agree to be a "guest star" for a WikiTree Challaenge, and I accepted.  The Challenge is a contest for registered researchers is to add person profiles to the WikiTree (now 38 million strong) that are within 7 degrees of myself (but not living people), to improve existing person profiles, and also to try to solve some of the brick walls" in my tree.  I had, at the start of the challenge on 2 May, 1113 "Connections" that are 7 degrees or closer to me.  In the week of the challenge, which ended on 9 May, I now have 2457 "Connections."  It helped that I connected my wife to her parents and those lines were pretty bare in WikiTree, and now those branches are fuller.  The WikiTree Challenges have four Zoom meetings - three during the Challenge week (they were on 2 May, 4 May and 9 May) and the big Reveal with results is this coming Thursday (16 May).  The Zoom meetings are on YouTube after they are held - check out the WikiTreers YouTube channel at   https://www.youtube.com/@WikiTreers.

So what was the Genealogy Fun?  Well, I was able to add some profiles to my RootsMagic tree based  on the research, and source citations, of the contestants.  The other fun was learning more about the efficient ways to add profiles, notes, sources and biographies using user-developed apps, and how to better navigate around the WikiTree system.

3)  One of the improved WikiTree profiles was for my great-grandaunt, Effie Eva Carringer (1858-1874) who is buried in Boulder, Colorado.  The contestant found more information about her, and when I did more research about her and I found a story on GenealogyBank about her gravestone being restored by volunteers back in 1999.  I contacted the person who took photogreaphs of the broken gravestone on Find A Grave, and learned more about the gravestone.

I've had more fun, but will save them for a future SNGF.

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.
