Where Did This Name Come From?

Over on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog, written by Linda Stufflebean, today's blog post is Where Did They Get These Names From?  Often, our ancestors named their children after famous persons, like Linda's example of Elbridge Gerry.

My problem has always been a bit more mysterious.  Three generations of my Seaver ancestors have had the middle name of "Walton."  They were:

*  Frank Walton Seaver (1852-1922), son of Isaac and Lucretia (Smith) Seaver.

*  Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942), son of Frank Walton and Harriet (Hildreth) Seaver.

*  Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983), son of Frederick Walton and Alma Bessie (Richmond) Seaver.

So where did "Walton" come from?  I have no clue.  I've considered:

1)  An ancestor with a first or last name of Walton.  I can't find any.  It would likely be in the ancestry of Isaac Seaver and Lucretia Smith, since their son was the first one with the middle name.

2)  A famous person named "Frank Walton."  A search on Google and Wikipedia found no famous persons with that name.  There was a "Frank Walton" who was an American football player, born in 1911.  Can't be him.  There was a philatelist named "Frank Walton" in England, but he was born in 1955.  Can't be him.

3)  A friend, associate or neighbor of Isaac and Lucretia named "Frank Walton."  I checked the 1850 U.S. census on Ancestry.com, and did not find a Frank Walton who resided in Medfield, Northborough, Westminster or Leominster, Massachusetts where they had lived.

4)  It sounded dignified or impressive.

Of course, Lucretia Townsend (Smith) Seaver had interesting given names.  She was named after a school teacher named Lucretia Townsend, who had taught school in Dedham with Lucretia's mother, Elizabeth Horton Dill before her marriage to Alpheus B. Smith.

Don't get me started worrying about my own middle name - Jeffrey.

'Tis still a mystery!  Thank you to Linda for the blog idea!

2011 Wisconsin State Historical Society Visit - Post 439 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

During our 2011 vacation to Springfield, Illinois and surrounding states, we had one day in Dane County, Wisconsin  in Madison at the historical society and library.  I wrote about it in Day 11 on the Seaver Midwest Genealogy Tour (posted 16 September 2011).

Here are some of the photos I took while in the Wisconsin State Historical Society in Madison:

1)  On the 4th floor is the Archives.  I took a photo of the cover of the book for the Wisconsin State Senate Journal that had the name change document for my 2nd great-grandfather, Devier James Lamphear Smith:

2)  And a photo of the page for the Act of the state senate granting the name change:

3)  Also at the Archives, I found a card file for naturalizations for Linda's Norwegian ancestors.  Here is a photo of the card for Elling Erikson Natvik:

4)  I found several pages for the naturalization of Linda's Leland ancestors:

4)  In the afternoon, I worked in the Library Reading Room and in the book stacks.  Google Books was in the process of digitizing books off the shelf in the County History section, much to my chagrin:

5)  Here is the Main Reading Room, that's Linda in the bright blue jacket on the right.  I don't think the guy dozing in the foreground is a genealogist.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a lot of pictures around Madison, the University or the Society.  I was hunting for forebears, not great pictures.  And it was my Canon point-and-shoot camera so lots of images are fuzzy.  Oh well.

Next week will be photos from another library in Madison.

Seavers in the News - Who Was Miss Seaver?

I found a sad, but interesting, newspaper article today on GenealogyBank:

The transcription of this article is:

"SUICIDE IN GARDNER -- A Miss Seaver, about seventeen or eighteen years old, whose home is in Westminster, but who has, for some time, been employed in a family in Gardner, committed suicide sometime during Tuesday night, by drowning.  She was seen about, as usual during the evening, but in the morning her room was found to have been unoccupied during the night.  Subsequent search revealed the fact that she had thrown herself into the pond near by, and her body was soon recovered.  No reason is given of sufficient importance to seem to account for this sad termination of life, and the affair has caused much excitement in the community."

The source citation for this article is (using the "Newspapers, Online Images" source template in RootsMagic):

"Suicide in Gardner," Massachusetts Spy [Worcester, Mass.], 3 June 1870, page 1; online images, GenealogyBank (http://www.genealogybank.com : accessed 15 November 2016), Newspaper Archive collection.

This whet my curiosity, of course, who was this Miss Seaver who drowned in a pond in Gardner?  The article says she was aged 17 or 18, her home was in Westminster, and she was probably not married.

I have thousands of Seaver folks in my RootsMagic database, and many of them resided in Massachusetts.  I figured that the death would be in the "Massachusetts Death Records, 1841-1915" database on Arthe NEHGS American Ancestors website.  I did a search for deaths of Seaver persons in Gardner in 1870, and there was only one match:

The second item on the page above (only partially shown) has this information:

*  Date of death:  May 24, 1870
*  Name of the deceased:  Julia E. Seaver
*  Sex:  Female
*  Condition:  Single
*  Age:  21 years, 3 months, 28 days
*  Cause of death:  Suicide by drowning
*  Residence:  Gardner
*  Birthplace:  Westminster
*  Parents names:  Asahel Seaver (born Westminster) and Tamar R. (born Gardner)

The source citation for this record is:

"Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841-1915," indexed database and digital images, New England Historic Genealogical Society, American Ancestors (http://www.AmericanAncestors.org : accessed 15 November 2016), Deaths, Worcester County, Gardner, 1870, Volume 231; Page 266, Julia E. Seaver entry.

I checked my RootsMagic database and there is Julia Etta Seaver, born 26 January 1849 in Westminster, Mass. to Asahel and Tamar R. (Hill) Seaver.  A quick mental calculation showed that she was aged 21 years, 3 months and 28 days when she died.  I added both sources above to my database, and will add the newspaper article transcription as a Note to the Death fact.

I wondered if her parents were still alive at the time of this event.  Her father died in 1862, but her mother was alive, and died in 1873.  I can't imagine the anguish of the mother and her siblings.

Treasure Chest Tuesday - 1880 U.S. Census Record for Nicholas Brocke Family in Nez Perce County, Idaho

This week's Tuesday treasure is the 1880 United States Census record for the Nicholas Brocke family enumerated in Township 37, Nez Perce County, Idaho:

The snippet of the Brocke family:

The extracted data from this record is:

*  Nicholas Brocke - white male, age 25, married, a farmer, born in Va., father born Prusia, mother born Prusia
*  Anna Brocke - white, female, age 20, wife, married, keeping house, born Mo., father born unknown, mother born unknown
*  John Brocke - white, male, age 2, son, single, born Idaho, father born Va., mother born Mo.
*  Frank Brocke - white, male, age 6/12, born Oct., son, single, born Idaho, father born Va., mother born Mo.

The source citation is:

1880 United States Federal Census, Nez Perce County, Idaho, population schedule, Township 37, Enumeration District 23, Page 14 (penned), page 246B (stamped), Dwelling # 178, Family #178, Nicholas Brocke household; digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com), citing National Archives Microfilm Publication T9, Roll 173.

The name of the head of household was indexed as Nicholas Brooke, although it looks like Brocke to me.  Nicholas and Anna (Grieser) Brocke were my wife's great-grandparents - they have just married in 1877 in Nebraska and have settled in Idaho and started their family.  Their fifth child, Amelia Anna Brocke (1884-1975), married Severt Leland in 1904 in Montana, is my wife's paternal grandmother.

I Started a We're Related Mobile App Cousin Relationship Table

I've been writing weekly about the additions to the list of cousins on the We're Related mobile app - see This Week's We're Related Cousin Relationships for an example.

My friend Russ Worthington has made a cousin relationship table, and is even adding his cousin relationships to an Ancestry Member Tree, and using the Hints to try to support the cousin relationships that he receives on the mobile app.  See his blog for more details -  https://worthy2be.wordpress.com/.

I haven't gone that far, but I do usually click on the lineage for the purported cousin and see if it makes sense to me.  In some cases, I have gone into FamilySearch Family Tree, Geni.com and WikiTree to determine if the lineage there is the same, and if the lineage "looks right."  Ideally, each step in the lineage should be researched, but I don't want to take the time right now.

I do check the line that the app shows for my lineage, and in several instances it has added one or more generations and found ancestors that I do not have in my Ancestry Member Tree.  When that happens, I look closer at the purported ancestor of mine in the records.  I have not found one new ancestor doing this yet - almost all of the relationships that I don't have in my tree cannot be supported by records and good judgment.

I now have over 50 cousin relationships from the mobile app, and I cannot recall what I've investigated, so I made a cousin relationship table in Microsoft Word from the app information, and added a comment column so that I know what I've investigated.

Here are three screen shots of my tables:

Of the 52 relationships provided so far, 20 of them are Facebook friends.

As you can see, I have questioned the information of 8 of the relationships.  I probably need to be more consistent in my comments.

Only 11 of my common ancestors are from my mother's side of the family, and all but two of those are from New England.  However, three of them are in my "Unlikely" category.  My father was from New England so that makes some sense.  Maybe I should color code the grandparents line.

What else should I add to this table?  It is for my own use so that I can keep track of what I'm getting, and I probably won't add to the table forever, but it's a start.  It took about an hour this afternoon to make and if I get 10 to 15 new cousin relationships each week, adding them will not be an onerous task.

The source citation for this document is:

"Massachusetts, Wills and Probate Records, 1635-1991," indexed database with digital images, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com), Suffolk County > Probate Records, Vol 5-7, 1666-1674, Vol. 6, pages 267-269 (images 333-4 of 922), James Allin will, 1676;  Original data in Massachusetts County, District and Probate Courts.

James Allin married Anna Guild (1616-1673) in 1638 in Dedham, Massachusetts.  They had 9 children between 1639 and 1654, all of whom outlived their parents.

The will of James Allin names only two of his children, Nathanael and Sarah (Allin) White, and also his son-in-law Joseph Clarke, who married Mary Allin (1641-1702) in 1663.  Joseph Clarke was named the executor of the will.  The will was written on 23 7th month (September?) 1676, and was proved in Suffolk County Probate Court on 30 January 1676/7.

This is a Derivative Source document, because it is a transcription done many years after the original will and the original entry into the Suffolk County Probate Court record books.  It provides Primary Information (assuming it was transcribed correctly) and Direct Evidence of relationships with two of his children and a son-in-law.

James Allin is my 9th great-grandfather, and I am descended through his daughter Mary (Allin) Clark and her husband, Joseph Clark (1642-1702).

NOTE:  Genea-blogger John Newmark (who writes the excellent  TransylvanianDutch blog) started a Monday blog theme years ago called "Amanuensis Monday."  John offers this definition for "amanuensis:"

"A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another."

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific collection, go to https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.
