Canadian Probate and Homestead (Land!) Records Are Searchable on FamilySearch Full-Text Search

Thanks to recent blog posts by John Reid ( ***** FamilySearch Experimental Labs Search of Canadian Probate Records) and Ken McKinlay (FamilySearch Full-Text Searching of Ontario Probate and Land Records), I learned that "Canada Probate Records, 1600-2020" and "Canada Homestead Records, 1600-2011" were added to the FamilySearch Full-Text Search feature in recent days.

1)  That is more good news for researchers whose only previous recourse to research these records was using FamilySearch digital microfilm or the actual microfilm at a FamilySearch Center or affiliate library.  Unfortunately, the Full-Text Search feature does not access ALL of the probate or land records available in Canada - only the records that are available online at home through the FamilySearch digital microfilm, and not the records that provide access only at a FamilySearch Center or affilite library.  But - there are now a lot of new records that can be found by searching by name, place, date, etc., on Full-Text Search.

2)  I have several families in Ontario in the 1780 to 1910 time frame, and easily found the probate record for my second great-grandfather, James A. Kemp (1831-1902) of Norfolk County, Ontario.  However, I had captured that record several years ago using the FamilySearch microfilms at the FamilySearch Library.

3)  I dove into these newly available records on FamilySearch Full-Text Search with an initial search for [+James +Kemp +Norfolk +Ontario].  I have not searched for James A. Kemp in the Ontario land records before.  When I search in this collection, the Search Results list indicates that there are 87 records that have those keywords on the record image as transcribed by the Full-Text Search feature:

I have looked at most of those 87 records today, and have downloaded 26 images of records from this collection, including the image, the transcription and the source citation.  The other records on the Search Results list are for records with the same names and places, but not for my James Kemp.  My search found records for James Kemp, James A. Kemp, James Abraham Kemp, and Abraham James Kemp that refer to my James Kemp.

Here is the first record on the Search Results list shown above:

The record page shown has the keywords highlighted in yellow, and the transcription of the text on the image (both pages) is on the right.  I can click on "Summarize the document" and see the Artificial Intelligence summary of what is in the document on the image.  For this record, here is the summarization:

Dorothea Smith, a widow from Woodhouse township, Norfolk County, certifies that Catherine Pettit and Ozias Pettit, both widows from Middleton township, have satisfied part of the money due on a mortgage made by John Albert Pettit in 1842. The mortgage was registered in the Norfolk County Registry Office in 1872. David Thomas Duncombe, a Bannister at law from Norfolk, confirms the execution of the certificate of discharge of mortgage. James A. Kemp, a carpenter from Fredericksburg village, certifies the satisfaction of all money due on a mortgage made by Delos Conder in 1872.

Dates

April 21, 1879: Indenture registered
April 19, 1877: Sworn statement by William Brand Blackader
April 12, 1877: Certificate of discharge of mortgage by Dorothea Smith
April 23, 1877: Certificate of discharge of mortgage registered
April 21, 1874: Sworn statement by David Thomas Duncombe
November 5, 1872: Mortgage made by Delos Conder
December 5, 1872: Mortgage registered
April 20, 1877: Certificate of discharge of mortgage by James A. Kemp

I can click on the "Group Data" tab on the top right of the page and see information about the record, including the image group title, the Research Wiki link, the Volume, the Language, the Creator, the Image Group Number and the Source Citation:

4)  I can save the record, the transcription, the source citation, and a link to the document by clicking on the "Download" icon (a down arrow) under the "Full Transcript" notation.  Here is the first page of the downloaded file (as an HTML file):

The transcription of the text on the page, the source citation, and the record link are on the next two pages of the download:

The text transcription is for everything on the page.  The record for James A. Kemp starts 9 lines from the bottom of the first transcription page above (starting with the line text of "Province of Ontario") through the end of the record transcription.  If a certain record is continued on a previous or later image, the transcription of that image can be found and copied.

5)  Note that there can be significant errors in the AI transcriptions (because of the handwritten names and places, and the clarity of the handwriting).  A diligent researcher will compare the transcription to the handwritten record to find the errors and correct them in his/her transcription.

6)  Obviously, this Full-Text Search is a significant timesaver - being able to Search for a name, place and date is critical - it sure beats paging through hundreds of records in digital microfilm to try to find your needle in a haystack.  Likewise, the transcription is a timesaver, but a user has to invest some time to make sure it is accurate.

7)  Now, my good-to-have but challenging problem is to piece together a chronology of James A. Kemp's land records - he bought and sold land, and took and gave mortgages, from about 1869 until 1900 in Norfolk County, Ontario.  Many of the transactions are recorded years after the transaction occurred.  And there may be records in other localities outside of this county in Ontario.

52 Relatives: Great-Grandaunt Cora A. Auble (1860-1876) of New Jersey and Indiana

A female child was born 28 October 1860 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, with father David Auble.[2]  This child is certainly Cora A. Auble,[1] the sixth and last child of David and Sarah G. (Knapp) Auble.

The David Auble family moved from Newark, New Jersey to Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana in about 1865.

In the 1870 United States census, the David Auble family resided in Terre Haute city, Vigo County, Indiana.[2]  The household included:

  • Daniel Auble (perhaps this is a census taker's error for David, it is obviously the David Auble family) -- age 53, male, a boot and shoemaker, with $2,500 in real estate and $200 in personal property, born NJ
  • Sarah Auble -- age 50, female, keeping house, born NJ
  • Mary Auble -- age 23, female, a teacher, born NJ
  • Charles Auble -- age 21, male, a painter, born NJ
  • Kate Auble -- age 17, female, at home, born NJ, attended school
  • Anna Auble -- age 10, female, at home, born NJ, attended school
  • Cora Auble -- age 8, female, at home, born NJ, attended school

Cora Auble was a student at the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute, Vigo County, indiana in the 1871 to 1874 school years.[3]

Cora A. Auble died before 13 January 1876 in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana at the age of 15 years, 2 months.  She was buried in 13 January 1876 in Woodlawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, where the gravestone inscription is:[1]

"Cora A. Auble,

1861-1876."

                                   ===================================

Cora A. Auble (1860-1876) is my great-grandaunt and the sister of my great-grandfather, Charles Auble (1849-1916).

I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents and a number of close relatives - see the list in 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies.

The "52 Relatives" theme is a weekly series to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short genealogical sketches, including important events, and with source citations.  These relatives lived and died within a family structure, and deserve a genealogical sketch - they were integral parts and important persons in the lives of my ancestral families.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree, WikiTree, and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.

Randy's Cousins -- 8th Cousin 1x Removed Neil Armstrong (1930-2012), the Famous Astronaut

This week's famous cousin is my 8th cousin 1x removed Neil Alden Armstrong (1930-2012), the famous astronaut.

Here is Neil Armstrong's Family Search Family Tree short biography:

American Astronaut. He was the mission commander of the Apollo 11 manned space flight to the Moon. On July 20, 1969, he became the first person in recorded human history to walk on the moon, before being joined on the lunar surface by fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. Viewed by a global audience of over 600 million people, he stepped foot on the lunar surface at 10:56 pm EST, saying "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."
Trained as an aerospace engineer at Purdue University and the University of Southern California, he served as a United States Naval Aviator during the Korean War, completing 78 combat missions. Following the war he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics as a test pilot, at the high speed flight station at Edwards Air Force Base in California. As a test pilot, he flew America's most advanced military aircraft including the F-100 Super Sabre, the F-101 Voodoo, the Lockheed F-104A Starfighter, the B-47 Stratojet and the North American X-15.
In 1957 he was recruited into the U.S. Air Force's Man in Space Program, and in 1962 he was selected as part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) second group of astronaut trainees. He flew his first space mission in March 1966 as commander of Gemini 8, successfully rendezvousing and docking with an unmanned orbital spacecraft.
In December 1968 he was selected as the commander of the Apollo 11 moon mission and was teamed shortly thereafter with Michael Collins and Edwin Aldren as part of the official flight crew. On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 began its four day, 250,000 mile journey to the moon, culminating in Armstrong's and Aldren's lunar landing, and historic moon walk. Following the Apollo 11 moon mission, he served briefly as the Deputy Associate Administrator for aeronautics for the Office of Advanced Research and Technology.
He resigned from NASA in August 1971, to accept a teaching position as a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati where he remained until 1979. He was appointed to the Rogers Commission by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, following the Challenger space shuttle disaster, serving as vice-chairman. Returning to civilian life following his retirement from NASA, he served as a commercial spokesman for the Chrysler Corporation and also served on several boards including Learjet, United Airlines, Marathon Oil, the Eaton Corporation and Taft Broadcasting.
He was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1969), the United States Military Academy's Sylvanus Thayer Award (1971), the Congressional Space Medal of Honor (1978), the Congressional Gold Medal (2009) the Korean Service Medal and Air Medal. He was an inductee into the Aerospace Walk of Honor in 1991 and the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1993.
The Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering on the campus of Purdue University, the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio, the lunar crater Armstrong and asteroid 6469 Armstrong are all named in his honor. In 2005 his authorized biography "First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong" was published and released to the general public.

The Wikipedia profile for Neil Armstrong is here.

Here is the Relative Finder chart showing my relationship to Neil Armstrong:

My most recent common ancestors with 8th cousin 1x removed Neil Armstrong are my 8th  great-grandparents Richard Stout (1615-1705) and Penelope --?-- (????-1705).

Are you related to Neil Armstrong?  Check out his profile on the FamilySearch Family Tree and click the "View Relationship" link at the top of the page.  Note that you have to have your profile connected to the FamilySearch Family Tree in order for this to work.

Guest Speaker:  Joanna Shear

"All About the Santa Cruz Jewish Genealogy Society"

Joanna Shear was first drawn to genealogy by an unknown name on a mysterious engraved silver chalice, which led to a reunion for family separated by the Holocaust. Years down the road, she works on family history for herself, including DNA to go beyond the documentation and trace new family connections. In addition to Jewish genealogy, she focuses on African American research as well as regions of California and the Midwest.

Born in Boston, she grew up in Missouri and landed in the San Francisco Bay Area more than 26 years ago to start her career in the semiconductor industry. She has completed Boston University’s Certificate Program in Genealogical Research as well as the ProGen study group and numerous genealogical institute courses. She is a lifetime member of the California Genealogical Society, and has been a member of the Santa Cruz Jewish Genealogy Society since 2022.

This program will present background information about Jewish Genealogy societies in general, as well as information about the SCJGS’s mission, approach, and programs. She under stands the challenges of Jewish genealogy, and enjoys helping others find their joy in genealogy! She will share success stories and touch on the future of SCJGS and how they can help.

Treasure Chest Thursday - 1799 Tax Assessment Record for Latham Lamphier in Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - an opportunity to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history research and genealogy musings.

Latham Lanphere was born in about 1752 in Hopkinton, Kings County, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, the son of Joshua and Zerviah (Ellis) Lanphere.  He died after 1810, probably in Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York.  Latham married Anna Wilbur in January 1772 in Hopkinton.  Anna was born in about 1744 in  Westerly, Kings County, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, the daughter of Samuel Wilbur.  Anna died in about 1813, probably in Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York.  They had at least 4 children.

Latham and Anna (Wilbur) Lanphere are my 5th great-grandparents, through their son Isaac Lanfear (1777-1851), who married Rosina Lown (1781-1881) in  1809.
