23andMe Autosomal DNA Estimate Has Changed A BIt

After reading Judy G. Russell's blog post, Updated DNA Tools, I wanted to look again at my ethnicity estimate on 23andMe - which they call Ancestry Composition.

1)  Here is my updated Ancestry Composition for the Standard Estimate (you can change this by clicking on the dropdown box above the chart which has "Standard" in it on the screen below):

The updated ethnicity estimate for the "Standard Estimate," relative to that I received in March 2013, is (listing only those that have a number):

*  European - 99.0% (was 99.3%)
**  Northern European
***  British & Irish - 18.4% (was 11.5%)
*** French & German - 6.1% (was 7.2%)
*** Scandinavian - 0.2% (was 1.5%)
***  Non-specific Northern European - 65.3% (was 66.4%)

**  Southern European
*** Non-Specific Southern European - 0.2% (was 0.3%)

**  Non-Specific European - 8.8% (was 12.6%)

*  East Asian and Native-American - 0.4% (was 0.6%)
** Native-American - 0.2% (was 0.5%)
** Non-Specific East Asian and Native-American - 0.3% (was 0.1%)

*  Middle Eastern & North African - 0.1% (was 0.0%)
**  North African - 0.1% (was 0.0%)

*  Unassigned - 0.5% (was 0.1%)

2)  I changed the Ethnicity Estimate to the "Speculative Estimate), and saw:

The updated ethnicity estimate for the "Speculative Estimate," relative to that I received in March 2013, is (listing only those that have a number):

*  European - 99.3% (was 99.4%)

**  Northern European
***  British & Irish - 46.7% (was 43.0%)
*** French & German - 24.7% (was 25.2%)
*** Scandinavian - 1.9% (was 2,7%)
***  Non-specific Northern European - 23.5% (was 26.1%)

**  Southern European
*** Non-Specific Southern European - 0.2% (was 0.3%)

**  Non-Specific European - 1.2% (was 1.6%)

*  East Asian and Native-American - 0.5% (was 0.6%)
** Native-American - 0.3% (was 0.6%)
** Non-Specific East Asian and Native-American - 0.2% (was 0.0%)

*  Middle Eastern & North African - 0.1% (was 0.0%)
**  North African - 0.1% (was 0.0%)

*  Unassigned - 0.1% (was 0.1%)

3)  I looked at the "Chromosome View" with the "Speculative Estimate" and saw:

On the chart above, the 23 chromosomes are colored by the sub-regional resolution.  I can see that all of my Native-American DNA is on chromosome 12, and all of my north African DNA is on chromosome 6.  My X-chromosome inherited from my mother is a bit of southern European and a lot of British & Irish.

4)  These estimates are fairly consistent with my genealogical estimate - my genealogy research shows that about 500 years ago, my ancestors were about 68% British and Irish, about 26% German, Dutch or French, and about 6% unknown.

The 23andMe ethnicity estimates are also fairly different from the AncestryDNA estimates I showed in First Look at my AncestryDNA Ethnicity Update.
