4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets) - Updated September 2025:

Anna Row was born in about 1787 in New Germantown, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. She was the third daughter and 6th child (of eight children) of Philip and Maria (Smith) Row of New Germantown, New Jersey, who married in 1772 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Her siblings were Mary Row (1773-1862), Elisabeth Row (1776-1857). John Jacob Row (1779-1837), Peter Row (1782-1816), William Row (1785-????), Philip Johannes Row (1791-1874), and Johannes Row (1795-????).

Anna Row's birth date of about 1787 is an estimate. She was married in July 1804,[7] so she would have been at least 17 years old at the time. The 1850 census record[2] says she was 66 years old (implies 1783-1784), and the 1860 U.S. census record[3] says she was 73 (implies 1786-1787). Her death in 1860 at age 72 would imply a birth year of about 1787-1788.

Anna Rouw married John Abel on 15 July 1804 in New Germantown, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.[7] The entry in the Marriages recorded at the Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick, N.J. says:
"John Abel and Anna Rouw, July 15 [1804]"
John and Anna (Row) Abel/Auble had at least nine children between 1804 and 1830.
  • Sophia Auble, born about 1805, Sussex, New Jersey; married (1) Alley H. Foster, before 1827, Sussex, New Jersey, one child; married (2) Seth W. Hulse, before 1850, Sussex, New Jersey, no children; died 1 May 1887, Blairstown, Warren, New Jersey.
  • William Auble, born about 1808, Sussex, New Jersey; married Tamsen Kemball, 25 February 1836, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, one child; married (2) Harriet F. --?--, before 1860, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, no children; died 13 February 1875, Camden, Camden, New Jersey.
  • Sarah Auble, born about 1811, Sussex, New Jersey; married Elijah E. Schoonover, before 1838, Sussex, New Jersey, six children; died 27 February 1889, Newton, Sussex, New Jersey.
  • Elizabeth Auble was born in 1814 in Sussex, New Jersey. She died pneumonia on 13 January 1899 at the age of 85 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • David Auble, born 1817, Stillwater, Sussex, New Jersey; married Sarah G. Knapp, 1844, Newton, Sussex, New Jersey, six children; died 22 March 1894, Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana.
  • Nathan S. Auble, born about 1820, Sussex, New Jersey; married Julia R. Kimball, before 1844, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, eight children; died 14 October 1886, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • Samuel H. Auble was born about 1823 in Sussex, New Jersey. He died on 12 September 1844 at the age of 21 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried on 21 September 1844 at Monument Cemetery in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • Hampton Auble, born September 1827, Sussex, New Jersey; married Louisa F. Bonsall, Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, three children; died 20 June 1901, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • Robert Auble, born 20 June 1830, Sussex, New Jersey; married (1) Ellen E. Hartman, 6 December 1855, Hardwick, Warren, New Jersey, six children; married (2) Amanda Savercool, about 1900, New Jersey, no children; died 4 February 1920, Blairstown, Warren, New Jersey.
Anna’s father, Philip Row, died on 9 June 1817 in Tewkesbury township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. His 1817 will was proved on 2 July 1817 in Hunterdon County probate court, identifies Anna Auble as his daughter.[1] She received a bequest of $5.

The John and Anna (Row) Auble family resided in Green, Sussex County, New Jersey for some time.

There are no New Jersey census records available before 1830. In the 1830 United States census for New Jersey, a John Auble household was in Green, Sussex County, New Jersey.[1] The household included:
  • two males under age 5 (likely sons Hampton and Robert),
  • two males age 5-10 (likely sons Nathan and Samuel),
  • one male age 10-15 (likely son David),
  • one male age 50 to 60 (certainly John),
  • one female age 5-10 (unknown person if the age range is correct),
  • one female age 15-20 (perhaps daughter Sarah or Elizabeth),
  • one female age 40-50 (certainly Anna).
Anna’s husband, John Auble, died intestate on 16 January 1831 in Byram, Sussex County, New Jersey. An inventory for a John Auble, taken 1 March 1831, was located in the Sussex County, New Jersey, Probate Records. The inventory of the personal estate totaled $307 including doubtful debts. There was no real property listed, asnd no account or distribution. Anna and her children probably lived in or near Green for some period of time after John’s death.

In the 1850 United States Census for Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey, the Seth W. Hulse household included:[2]
  • Seth W. Hulse - age 53, male, white, labourer, $6000 in real property, born in N.J.
  • Sophia Hulse - age 46, female, white, born in N.J.
  • Euphemia Foster - age 20, female, white, born in N.J.
  • Ann Auble - age 66, female, white, born in N.J.
Sophia Hulse is Anna’s daughter who married twice, first to Alley Foster in 1827, and second to Seth Hulse. Euphemia Foster is Sophia’s daughter by her first husband.

In the 1860 United States Census for Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey, the Sophia Hults household included:[3]
  • Sophia Hults - age 49, female, white, $1350 in real property, $210 in personal property, born in N.J.
  • Ann L. Buit - age 5, female, white, born in N.J.
  • Ann Auble - age 73, female, white, born in N.J.
In the 1860 census, Sophia “Hults” is daughter Sophia (Auble) (Foster) Hulse, and Ann L. “Buit” is the daughter of Euphemia Foster and her husband, John Bales.

Ann (Row) Auble died 12 June 1860 in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey at age 72 years, a widower. The death record in the New Jersey Deaths and Burials Index, 1798-1971 has this indexed information:[4]
  • NAME: Ann Auble
  • [Ann Row]
  • BIRTH DATE: abt 1788
  • BIRTH PLACE: Morris Co
  • DEATH DATE: 12 Jun 1860
  • DEATH PLACE: Stillwater, Sussex, New Jersey
  • DEATH AGE: 72 years
  • OCCUPATION: Laborer
  • MARITAL STATUS: Widowed

The inscription on the gravestone in Harmony Hill Methodist Churchyard in Stillwater, New Jersey says:[5-6]
Anna
Wife of
John Auble
Died Jun. 3, 1863
Age 72 yrs
There is a disparity between the death date reported in the New Jersey Deaths and burials database and the gravestone. It is possible that the gravestone was installed several years after the death and the death date was inscribed wrongly.
