The Genealogy Insider blog, written by Diane Haddad (managing editor of Family Tree Magazine), has a post titled "Free Photo Detective Download with Newsletter Sign-up" that offers genealogists a free download of a 42-page e-Book - Best of the Photo Detective. It contains photo historian Maureen A. Taylor’s best tips for identifying mystery family photographs.
Maureen A. Taylor authors the Photo Detective column in Family Tree Magazine. She also writes the Photo Detective with Maureen A. Taylor blog. The e-Book is a collection of her columns, in PDF format, plus some other articles that she has written for the magazine.
In order to download the free e-Book, the reader has to sign up for a free Family Tree Magazine weekly newsletter.
I can't resist freebies, especially in digital format. I signed up for the newsletter, and downloaded the PDF e-Book, and scanned through it. The articles in the front of the book are very helpful summaries of what to look for in analyzing old photographs. The columns are excellent examples of applying the principles to specific problems. A bonus is to have many of Maureen's columns in one place.
Frankly, I hope that Family Tree Magazine does more of this type of marketing of themselves. I like digital editions of things, since my magazine stacks are up to the window ledge and are threats to fall over in a big earthquake.
