Best of the Genea-Blogs - August 11 to 17, 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  FNU LNU MNU UNK by Tamura Jones on the Modern Software Experience website.  Tamura highlights how family trees have these, and other, abbreviations in them.

*  Shedding Light on the Dark Age of American Genealogy by Harold Henderson on Midwestern Microhistory: A Genealogy Blog.  Well said by Harold - an excellent list of resources too.

*  Wherein I Once Again Take on the Threat of Standardized Place Names by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James reminds us that places weren't always called what they are called now.

*  Research Calendars by Michele Simmons Lewis on the Ancestoring's Ask A Genealogist blog.  Michele shows how she maintains her research calendar (log) to record her findings, sources, questions and conclusions.

*  Wrestling With FamilySearch Record Collections That Use the Russell Index by Chris Staats on the Staats Place blog.  Chris explains how to use it - it works well once you figure it out!

*  SSDI Quiz: Understanding the U.S. Social Security Death Index by Mary Harrell-Sesniak on the GenealogyBank Blog.  Take Mary's quiz - how did you do?

*  How Do You Make Money in Genealogy? 2013 Update by Thomas MacEntee on the Hack Genealogy blog.  Thomas reveals his answers - interesting and encouraging.

*  Harnessing the Power on Online Family Trees by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.  Mr. AI reviews Anna Fechter's talk on this subject at the recent BYU Conference.

*  Searching Outside the Lines Genealogy Style by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  Kenneth seems to have a lot of fun and success by not following convention.

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

*  Follow Friday - Favorites for August 16, 2013 by Heather Kuhn Roelker on the Leaves For Trees blog.

*  Follow Friday - Fab Finds for August 16, 2013 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

*  Friday's Finds - 8/16/13 by Julie Cahill Tarr on Julie's Genealogy & History Hub blog.

*  News and Blog Posts for Genealogists, August 16, 2013 by Michael Leclerc on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog.

*  Genealogy Isn't Free?  An Oratrix?  It's Follow Friday! by Anne Gillespie Mitchell on the Finding Forgotten Stories blog.

*  Saturday Serendipity by John D. Tew on the Filiopietism Prism blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1400 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
