Transferring Media Files Between Software Programs - Post 5: Family Tree Maker 2014 GEDCOM Created

I am posting a series on transferring Media Files between genealogy software programs and an Ancestry Member Tree using a GEDCOM export.  Here are the posts to date:

Transferring Media Files Between Software Programs - Post 1: Project Defined and RootsMagic GEDCOM Created

*  Transferring Media Files Between Software Programs - Post 2: RootsMagic GEDCOM Imported to Family Tree Maker 2014

*  Transferring Media Files Between Software Programs - Post 3: RootsMagic GEDCOM Imported to Legacy Family Tree 7.5

*  Transferring Media Files Between Software Programs - Post 4: RootsMagic GEDCOM Imported to an Ancestry Member Tree

In this post, I'm going to create a GEDCOM file in Family Tree Maker 2014 for use in successive posts to determine if Media files transfer from this program to RootsMagic 6, Legacy Family Tree 7.5, and an Ancestry Member Tree.

I'm also going to select three persons in the Family Tree Maker 2014 file and identify all of the Media items linked to the person or to events for those three persons.  I created a new family tree database in Family Tree Maker 2014 recently, and am using this for this study.

Russ Worthington provided an early version of this tree (about 50 people) to me as a Backup file on 3 November 2014.  Since then, I've been adding content to this Family Tree Maker 2014 file as my research in this family progressed.

Russ and I have done only online genealogy research for this family tree.  I added a census record to the person profile image for the three persons to see if "Person" media transfers.  There are no downloaded photographs or scanned photographs in this database.

1)  The GEDCOM creation process in FTM 2014 is:

*  In any Workspace, click on the "File" menu item and select the "Export" item:

*  The "Export dialog window opened, and I selected GEDCOM 5.5 from the dropdown list for the Output format, and checked on the other options that I wanted:

Clicking "OK" creates the GEDCOM file - it went pretty fast!

*  I wanted to see how many People, Marriages, surnames Sources, citations and Media were in the GEDCOM file, so I opened the "Plan" Workspace and clicked on the "More" button (in upper left next to "About This Family Tree"):

I noted that the GEDCOM file has:

**  271 People
**  70 Marriages
**  62 Surnames
**  274 Places
**  60 Sources
**  280 Citations
**  131 Media

*  I went to the "Media" Workspace and determined that there were 131 Media items in this database, some of which are linked to several persons and events.

I also noted that all of the "Media" items are in one file folder titled "John Collins Ancestry Media" on my computer for this database.  There are 132 items in this file folder.

2)  Here is the "Person" page, in the "People" Workspace, for Ethel M. (Hall) (Powell) (Lathem) Kays (1907-1981) in this database:

The itemized list of Media on this page above is:

*  1910 U.S. Census (Person; Name; Sex; Birth; Residence; Race)
*  1920 U.S. Census (Name; Sex; Birth; Residence; Race)
*  1930 U.S. Census (Name; Sex; Residence; Marriage Status; Race; Marriage)
*  1940 U.S. Census (Name; Sex; Residence; Marriage Status; Race)
*  Illinois Deaths and Stillbirth Index, 1916-1947, for Loy Lathem)

Ethel has 5 different Media images attached to 22 separate Facts and one image attached to her Person.

3)  Here is the "Person" page, in the "People" Workspace, for Icis (Reeves) Powell (1879-1968) in this database:

The itemized list of Media on this page above is:

*  1880 U.S. Census (Person; Name; Sex; Birth; Residence, Race)
*  1900 U.S. Census (Birth, Residence; Race)
*  1920 U.S. Census (Name; Sex; Birth; Residence; Occupation; Marriage Status, Race)
*  1930 U.S. Census (Name; Birth; Sex)
*  1940 U.S. Census (Name; Sex; Residence; Marriage Status)

Icis has 5 different Media images attached to 22 separate Facts and one image attached to her Person.

4)  Here is the "Person" page, in the "People" Workspace, for John O. Snearley (1860-1932) in this database:

The itemized list of Media on this page above is:

*  1900 U.S. Census (Person; Name; Birth; Residence; Race)
*  1910 U.S. Census (Name; Birth; Residence; Race)
*  1920 U.S. Census (Name; Birth; Residence; Race)
*  1930 U.S. Census (Name; Birth; Residence; Race)

John has 4 different Media images attached to 16 separate Facts and one image attached to his Person.

5) I will compare all of that to the number of Media items found in RootsMagic 6 in the next post in this series.

Randy,

You said "I also noted that all of the "Media" items are in one file folder titled "John Collins Ancestry Media" on my computer for this database. There are 132 items in this file."

Was that 132 items in this file or FOLDER?

Your Media workspace shows 131 Media files that are linked into FTM2014. If there are 132 items in the folder, that would mean that ONE of those files is not in FTM2014.

Also, Do you have those Census Images Linked to the PERSON and then you linked that media file to the thumbnail image in the upper right of the People Workspace, Tree or Family View for the selected person?

In my file, I only link Census Records (media files) to Citations.

In the Media Workspace, Detail Tab, under the image, there will be ONE link and that is to the Citation. It looks like you also linked that media file to the Person. So, yours would show at least 2 links.

Yes, Russ, I meant file folder. The 132nd file is a "Thumbs" Database file. I'll fix the blog post. Thanks!

I linked one media item to each of my 3 focus persons...not to every person. So there is only 1 link linked to the citation for most of the Media in the Media Workspace Details. I'm not smart enough to know how to link multiple images to the Person.

Randy,

OK, Got it. Thank you.

You can link a Person to a Media file from two places. Media Workspace, Details Tab, selecting the Media File, lower left, Link Tab, New. You can link to a Citation or a Person.

From the People Workspace, Person View, Media Tab at the bottom, New, Link to EXISTING, because you already have the media file within FTM2014.

Hope that helps,

Russ
