Best of the Genea-Blogs - 7 to 13 September 2014

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Cause of Death: A Genealogical Clue by Zachary Garceau on the Vita Brevis blog.  This is an interesting analysis, plus it highlights some of them ore unusual causes of death on death certificates.

*  A Problem With a 1-Word Solution by Elizabeth Shown Mills on the Evidence Explained QuickTips blog.  This is about fair use of quoted material.

*  Using Time Lines as A Family History Writing Tool by Diane Hewson on the Worldwide Genealogy ~! A Genealogical Collaboration blog.  Excellent post on using a spreadsheet for timelines.

*  Cite Seeing by Tony Proctor on the Parallax View blog.  Tony describes his STEMMA approach so source citations.

*  Wednesday Spotlight: Online Genealogy Pioneers Dr. Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson by Tami Mize on the WikiChicks blog.  Tami interviews Brian and Karen, creators of Rootsweb and Linkpendium.

*  Not On the Boat by Jacqi Stevens on the A Family Tapestry blog.  Jacqi provides experiences and guidance on dealing with Irish immigrants.

*  17 Genealogy Things To Do If You Have Only a Few Minutes by Diane Haddad on the Genealogy Insider blog.  Only 17?

*  Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters by Janet Hovorka on the Zap the Grandma Gap blog.  Janet went to FGS in San Antonio and found some goodies.  I see a Czech Republic trip in her future.

*  A Beginners Guide to Newspaper Research for Genealogy by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.   Ken has some useful tips for how-to search these sites.

*  Where There's a Will by Diane Boumenot on the One Rhode Island Family blog.  Diane analyzes one of her ancestral families after finding online probate records, and compares family structure to that in a compiled genealogy.

*  People Places Stories by Jill Ball on the GeniAus blog.  That about covers it!  Jill recently spoke to her grandsons class.

*  Ancestry Insider Photographed at FGS Conference by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.  Excellent photos of the mysterious Ancestry Insider.  someone could cobble a composite face from these.

*  Truths Revealed by Michael Lacopo on the Hoosier Daddy? blog.  Big surprise here...this could happen to all of us.

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

*  Monday's Muse, 8 September 2014 by Eowyn Langholf on the WikiChicks blog

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1540 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

Wow! What a week this has been. First, Randy, I want to say congratulations to you and join you in welcoming your fifth grandchild, Charlie, into the world!

Then, I wanted to let you know I'm doubly grateful for all your kind words this week on behalf of A Family Tapestry. I appreciate the mention in your "Best of" column today. And for being included in Wednesday's round-up for the "One Lovely Blog" award. Thank you so much.

I have to confess, I had been languishing with my head in the sand since your post on Wednesday. My analytics kept showing hits from your blog, but I couldn't figure out why...until I clicked back and read your post.

Since I'm buried with all the details of getting ready for our research trip to Ireland, I just wasn't sure what to do. But in the fun spirit in which the recognition was given, I'm holding out for a rain check so I can put some decent thought and time into an official reply upon my return home in late October.

In the meantime, hearty thanks for all your kind words! You certainly are a great encourager! Even if you are a Padres fan ;)

Thanks for the inclusion on this weeks list Randy. We should call it Grandsons' week.
