It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.
The treasure today is the 1733 marriage record of Ichabod Kirby and Rachel Allen in the Dartmouth, Massachusetts vital records:
The Kirby-Allen marriage record:
The transcription of this record is:
"[KIRBY] Ichabod (Cerby) [int. Kirby], s[on]. Robert of D[artmouth]., and Rachel Allen, d[aughter]. Joseph of D[artmouth]., 1st, 1 mo., "called March," 1732-3, C.R. 3"
The source citation for this record is:
Vital records of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, to the year 1850 ( Boston, Mass. : New England Historic Genealogical Society,1929-1930), Marriages, page 285, Ichabod Kirby and Rachel Allen entry, 1732.
Ichabod Kirby (1705-1793) of Dartmouth, Mass. was born 31 December 1705 in Dartmouth to Robert and Rebecca (Potter) Kirby. He married Rachel Allen (1708-1801), daughter of Joseph and Rachel (--?--) Allen of Dartmouth.
Ichabod and Rachel (Allen) Kirby are my 6th great-grandparents. I am descended from their son David Kirby (1740-1832), who married Martha Soule (1743-1828) in 1763 and resided in Dartmouth and Westport, Massachusetts.
This record for the marriage of Ichabod Kirby and Rachel Allen is a Derivative Source record, because it was copied from an earlier town and/or church record books. I did not find an earlier Dartmouth town record book in the Ancestry.com record collection. This record is from the church records of Society of Friends, Dartmouth Monthly Meeting (that is what "C.R.3" means according to the Dartmouth Vital Records book).
The date in the record is clearly 1 March 1732/3, but Ancestry.com indexed it as 1 January 1732.
