4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

Michael Metcalf was born 12 August 1706 in Medfield, Massachusetts, the first child and first son of Michael and Lydia (White) Metcalf[9].  The Metcalf family moved to Medway, Massachusetts in about 1713.

Michael Metcalf of Medway and Melatiah Hamant of Medfield were married by Mr. Buckman on 2 July 1728 in Medway[2-3], and they had eight children:

*  Oliver Metcalf (1729-1797), who married Sarah Hammond (1727-1813) in 1759.
*  Michael Metcalf (1730-1777), married Sarah Allen (1732-1756) in 1753.
*  Melatiah Metcalf (1732-1766), married Jonah French (1728-1764) in 1750.
*  Amity Metcalf (1734-????)
*  Abijah Metcalf (1735-2825), married Mercy Ellis (1742-1818) in about 1763.
*  Sarah Metcalf (1737-1812), married Amos Davis (1732-1794) in 1757.
*  Burgess Metcalf (1741-1816), married Jerusha --?-- (about 1750-1817) before 1770.
*  Silas Metcald (1745-????).

All but the last child were born in Medway; Silas was born in Rutland, Massachusetts.

Michael and Melatiah (Hamant) Metcalf moved their family to Keene, New Hampshire before 1750[1,10].  Several of their children were married in Cheshire County, New Hampshire.

Melatiah (Hamant) Metcalf died on 30 December 1751 in Keene.  One derivative source states that Michael married a second time, to a Hannah --?--, and had three children by her between 1757 and 1760[1].  However, Hannah might have married the son, Michael Metcalf (1730-1777), whose first wife died in 1756.

Michael Metcalf was a subscriber to the petition to the Governor of New Hampshire to incorporate the town of Keene, New Hampshire (granted as Upper Ashuelot) on 11 February 1750[10].  His sons Oliver, Michael Jr, and Abijah were also listed on the petition.

Michael Metcalf was named a selectman in 1753[4], a town meeting moderator in 1754[5], 1759[6] and 1760[6], and the meetings were held at his house for some time.  In 1766, he was named as "saxton" of the church meetinghouse[7].  He was selected as a petit juror in September 1771[8].

 In the 1759 and 1760 records[6], he was called "Capt. Michael Metcalf," so he may have served in the skirmishes in New Hampshire with the natives there in the French and Indian War.

Michael Metcalf died after September 1771, probably in Keene, New Hampshire[1].  There are no death or burial records for Michael Metcalf in Cheshire County.

There are no known probate records for Michael Metcalf in Cheshire County, New Hampshire.
