Monday Genea-Pourri - Week Ending 12 August 2019

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week:

1)  Attended the Chula Vista Genealogical Society Board meeting and reported on the monthly Research Group, DNA Interest Group and Newsletter activities.  Wrote, edited, and distributed via email attachment and postal mail the August 2019 newsletter to the membership.

2)  Attended the Chula Vista Genealogical Society By-Laws Review Committee meeting on Friday to review and revise the society By-Laws, Standing Rules, and Standard Operating Procedures.  We modified several committee SOPs.

3)  Presented  "Genetic Genealogy and DNA Testing" to 26 attendees at the OASIS classroom in Grossmont Center.  This covered the basics of DNA, the different tests available, what each provider delivers (e.g, Ancestry, MyHeritage, 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA, Living DNA), and several third-party tools (GEDmatch, Genetic Affairs, and DNA Painter).

4)  Participated in today's Mondays With Myrt webinar, and acted as a opinionated panelist.  Subjects discussed included Dave Robison's SAR event in September, use of the Scrivener software, the Facebook group list, the question "do you create the presentation or handout first, and why." the Mastering Genealogical Proof book, Nathan Dylan Goodwin's upcoming book featuring forensic genealogist Morton Farrier, The Sterling Affair, Hillary's London 2019 RootsTech free pass winner, John Laws' problem with an Ancestry collection, England parish maps, and my "Dear Randy" post.

5)  Watched one Legacy Family Tree Webinar -- Case Studies in Gray: Identifying Shared Ancestries Through DNA and Genealogy, by Nicka Smith.

6)  Wrote and posted a biography of 6th great-grandfather #498 Henry Pickel (1729-1765) for my 52 Ancestors ancestor sketch on Friday.

8) There were several sessions working in the RootsMagic software program to update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles for Seaver families and my ancestral families, with occasional additions to the RootsMagic profiles. I have matched 31,911 of my RootsMagic persons with FSFT.

8)  I continue to use Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and sources to my RootsMagic profiles.  I now have 54,264 persons in my RootsMagic file, and 107,797 source citations.   I TreeShared twice this week updating 182 profiles, and I resolved 555 Ancestry Hints.  I've fallen behind on the Ancestry Record Hints with 113,695 to be resolved, but I work on them weekly.

10) Wrote 17 Genea-Musings blog posts last week, of which one was a press release.  The most popular post last week was Amanuensis Monday -- 1796 Deed of Samuel Hoar to Nathan Gates in Gardner, Massachusetts with over 814 views.
