Monday Genea-Pourri - Week Ending 17 November 2019

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week:

1)  Moderated the Chula Vista Genealogical Society Research Group meeting on Wednesday, with 18 in attendance.  I reported on the automated indexing of Newspapers.com obituaries, mining Ancestry Hints by database, MyHeritage Education, American Ancestors free for a week, and receiving a GRO civil registry birth certificate.  The attendees discussed their research challenges, questions and successes.

2)  Participated in Mondays With Myrt today.  The panel discussed Thanksgiving family history activities, Mayflower ancestors, New York's birth certificates for adoptees, passing on genealogy work, Cyndi's List, NGSQ study groups, historical place names, and Pat's upcoming WAGS seminar.

3)  Watched one Virtual Genealogical Society video -  Artificial Intelligence & the Coming Revolution of Family History, by Ben Baker.  Ben even discussed my Automated Indexing post on Genea-Musings.

4)  Wrote and posted a biographical sketch of 7th great-grandmother #515 Eunice (Norman) Rayment (1686-1743) for my 52 Ancestors biographical sketch on Friday.

6) There were several sessions working in the RootsMagic software program to match with and update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles for Seaver families and my ancestral families, with occasional additions to the RootsMagic profiles. I have matched 33,552 of my RootsMagic persons with FSFT.

7)  Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and sources to my RootsMagic profiles.  I now have 55,352 persons in my RootsMagic file, and 112,079 source citations.   I TreeShared twice this week updating 151 profiles, and I resolved 911 Ancestry Hints.  I've fallen behind on the Ancestry Record Hints with 121,573 to be resolved, but I work on them weekly.

8) Wrote 18 Genea-Musings blog posts last week, of which two were press releases.  The most popular post last week was Amanuensis Monday -- 1778 Deed of Silas Marshall Selling Land to Simon Gates in Worcester County, Massachusetts with over 736 views.  Why did this transcription receive so many views when most of them get fewer than 150 views?

I'm always amazed at the extent of the effort you put in every week on this and appreciate the time you take to communicate it.

I was struck by your statistic of 55,000 people and 112,000 sources so looked at mine. I've got 22,000 people and 44,000 sources. Do you have any insights on the 1 : 2 ratio?

Of course many sources name multiple people - birth, wedding and death certs, census records, etc.

Thanks,
Bill Greggs
